- Mention ghost ships and a few will always pop into mind. But one of these is so old and so famous that it exists even in the minds of those who have never even gone to sea. A tale so famous it exists in children's tv shows and has even inspired an opera of the same name. The Flying Dutchman needs no introduction, but in case you didn't know it, this is the tale of the Dutch East India Company ship that haunts the seas to this very day.

Could you do a video on the barentz expedition
Just to let you know, this one isn’t in your series playlist,
👍
If a struggling sailor listens holds high senses they will find a green glow radiating from a wooden vessel with ripped sails and the most morbid condition. If the ship is in a close radius, you can hear the desperate cries of the haunting crew:
Patrick: “LeDaLeDaLe”
Amen.
Alternatively...
"You're good! You're good! You're good!"
aye, he's a Frying Dutchman now following the layoffs
Arg arg arg arg arg arg. 😂
Actually the name of our local chip shop.
“Don’t mention The Mouse… his spies… are all around us” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
ROFLMMFAO.. neglected to mention the several appearances on Spongebob.. oh, there it is.
He will hyuck you up....
Well, he’s not wrong.
I'd like to say this is no longer the case but only on a slim technicality
@@ayyyyph2797 crazy what difference 2 years makes 😂
And now I am going to contemplate just what I will do with a drunken sailor.
You.. are.. naughty. One naughty wah-sca-wee wabbit.
I was a flying Dutchman a while ago.
I fell out of bed.
While thinking about it,
more likely a falling Dutchman.
Amen.
Well technically you'd be a Falling-With-Style Dutchman
Isn't there a real ghost ship, I believe a Russian icebreaker, that broke free of a tow and has been witnessed for decades, still afloat?
The Baychimo in Alaska, I don't remember which flag she flew but it kept afloat 30 years after being abandoned due to ice
She was a swedish German ship that was bought by Canada I'm pretty sure. No one's seen her since the 70's but she might still be out there. She wasn't an icebreaker though, she was a cargo transport.
The MV Lyubov Orlova. It was impounded nice 2010 in St. John’s, Newfoundland for two years after it was seized due to its owner owing a charterer $251 000 US. In 2012 it was sold to a new company to be broken up for scrap metal.
While it was being towed from St. John’s Harbour to the Dominican Republic the tow cable snapped, and the weather was too bad for the tug to reconnect.
It’s been bobbing around the North Atlantic ever since, and is believed to have sunk some time in 2013, after drifting within 2 400 kilometres of Ireland.
The Billy Talent song *Ghost Ship of Cannibal Rats* is named after rumours about the MV Lyubov Orlova.
The ultimate pirate legend, and the best ship from potc
I read somewhere that if you wave to a crew member of the Dutchman, you will switch places with them. Pretty creepy stuff!
Yeah, I don't think that tale holds any truth in it. I waved at Paris Hilton once, but I'm still broke and -shrimpy- diminutive.. still _hot_ though.
@@St.Linguini_of_Pesto
No it's actually true. I waved at your mum once, and immediately started coughing up spooge. 😆
The story that i was told from childs age, and i was raised in the Netherlands, was that the ship was in harbor, and that the captain wanted to sail during a christian holiday, easter i believe. Everyone, even his crew, told him not to sail, for he needed to be pious that day. Yet he sailed. And now untill this day he still sails, waiting for the day that he will return to his faith.
As another Dutch person, I second this.
5:35 that scared the SHIT outta me, had the video playing in the background with headphones on lol
The flying dutchman reminds me of the grim reaper. People claim to see it before they die sometimes. Maybe Mr. Reaper uses a vessel when collecting souls at sea.
My great grandfather was stationed around the cape of good hope, and swore till the day he died he saw the Dutchman.
My favourite stand alone Wagner opera: That Overture is amazing!
Strangely a rare dud in James Mason's filmography.
Glad I’m not the only Wagner fan to have clicked on this video. Definitely one of his best overtures.
You should do the SS Alkimos, Its another great Ghost story for the month of October and I would love to hear Theories about the events of that ship.
Beware the damned Mouse!
"What's the matter afraid you'll get wet?"
I love that nearly nobody cared about this legend for centuries at a time, then it reappeared because of the pop culture juggernauts of Pirates of the Caribbean and SpongeBob within only a couple years.
Oh, I never heard the full story of this ship. Thanks for informing me and nice video!
Same!
Now I‘m wondering, what would happen, if a random ship accidentally ran over the flying dutchmen. Would the random ship’s crew still suffer from the bad luck or wouldn‘t they, because they just rammed and sank the ship, that brings the bad luck?
Perhaps that’s how a new ghost ship is a-born… 🏴☠️
One doesn't kill the messanger
What happens if you engage the Dutchman in combat and sink it?
"The Dutchman must always have a captain"
Odd, this didnt come up in my recommended list. Had to seek it out.
Good choice of music btw. It's always been fun to know the connotations while others think its a fun jovial song. Definitely worthy of a Halloween vid! Speaking of which. Happy Hallows Eve everybody!
What is this tune? I know I've heard it many times
@@ChadDulake "What Do You Do with a Drunken Sailor"
The Dutchman just liked wakeboarding and Sanic. Gotta go fast!
Always a great day when you post! Catching up on your vids now but so ready for what's left of Ghost Ship Month (if anything)
I've seen a Fata Morgana mirage over the Nevada salt flats last winter.
This didn't even pop up in my recommendations. Glad you did this one!
My aim when I die is to serve as the Morale Officer aboard the Dutchman. 🤪
The beatings will continue until morale improves
Oh man those old school diver suits
Always loved the Jethro tull song.
I've heard tales of the Flying Dutchman being a curse to landlubbers, too! Once she is seen by somebody from the shore, they will never get the winning numbers correctly.. every number will be merely one.. digit.. off. If you pick a 4, the number will come up 3 or 5; 17 will turn up 16 or 18, and so on.
That's why I still can't win ye olde Powerball. Yarr.
I don't know about no Flying Dutchman, but lemme tell ya about the I time I laid me eyes on the Levitating Belgian!
Holy cow your channel exploded in subs! I want to say Congrats on 10k subs, and will surely see you at 1 mil one day!
Davy Jones's personal ship in Pirates of the Caribbean
Hey so the old time diver can I get that artwork for a tattoo? I am a diver and have some dive tats, but that is just awesome/hilarious and would love to get it done.
“But whether this crime was murder or piracy was a subject to much debate.”
Not a crime, but what about killing an albatross, the bird of good fortune for sailors?
Speaking of seagoing superstition.. If you bring a banana in my boat, I’ll throw you off. Terrible luck. Brings bad fishing luck, bad weather and mechanical issues
Very scary! 😲☠️👻🎃😉
5:32 MY EARS JUST GOT JUMPSCARED
Part of the crew, Part of the Ship
Do a video on the USS Indianapolis, The HMS Jersey, or Japanese Hell ships. All three are true Maritime horrors.
Now I want to rewatch the spongebob episodes with him…
5:35
You know you're evil when even the spirits of the afterlife fear the very thought of your name. x3
Lol, i love how this thumbnail sticks out like a sore thumb from all the others!
Nothing like some SpongeBob to make a nautical reference!
Shiver me timbers . The background music swamps the narration . Time for volume off and closed captions on .
Oh my Allah!
For some reason this isn’t showing up in the playlist of superstitious sailors videos.
Why have ghost ship stories and not mention the Flying Dutchman? It’s *the* ghost ship.
Oddly enough British Columbia, Canada had it's own Flying Dutchman.
A pirate that roamed it's shores, and one day murdered a Mountie.
After he got caught, he actually held a world record for a while, and may still hold it.
The World's Quickest Death by Hanging.
Spongebob Squarepants is a documentary.
In "two years before the mast" the Author describes a conversation with a sailor who claims that finns could control the wheather. Will you cover that superstition too?
Consider my timbers thoroughly shivered 💀
Davey Jones was in the Monkees.
The unspeakable crime would have been gay sex. They used to have all sorts of crazy euphemisms for hot guy-on-guy action. So my guess is that it's a cautionary tale like Sodom & Gomorrah. Y'know, the sort of story that keeps a superstitious young seaman from getting too close to the caulker's caulking gun, if you catch my drift.
I suggest you do a video on the perspective of an enemy of Thomas Cochran
The ship also featured in a Brian Jacques book.
👍🌎
4:58 forecastle is pronounced folk-sl not fore castle because of some old english thing.
Where does the "flying" part of the flying Dutchman come from though lol.
Tiny point, but George want Prince of Wales when he saw the Dutchman. He wasn't even Duke of York yet, his father was Prince of Wales (his grandmother Victoria was still alive) and his older brother -- I believe was Duke of York. I don't know that he had any title at that point. He became Duke of York after his older brother died and Prince of Wales after his father ascended you the throne on Victoria's death.
Now, his older brother, the heir apparent, was also there at the sighting and he died young...
Considering that Steven Hillenburg is a Marine biologist and the narrator of SpongeBob is based upon Jacques Cousteau, and is backed by his son, I would say "Sponge-Bob Square-Pants" is a documentary. Don't knock the "Flying Dutchman" as presented in that comic, because you really don't know. LOL
It's not as fast as the Black Pearl from what I heard. 😜
Edit: the Pope doesn't have super powers? Well then how does he make riding around in that stupid looking car seem so cool?
I love your channel brotber!
I ❤ obly God abd my family.
I 👍 your channel.
love this channel!
I mean to be fair if you see an actual ghost ship, you're probably doomed.
Gold and Gunpowder sent me.
What do we do with a drunken sailor?
We fuck him.
I only heard of it from SpongeBob
Do you guys think we'll have ghost spaceships one day?
Overwatch Sigma Fans:
This has nothing to do with Sigma!
I would like you to do a video on the Philadelphia experiment
He did.

Be careful, Diaper Dan is taking over your channel.
