    Thanks for running with my keyboard idea, Scott. My last piano lesson was sixty years ago & all I remember is the basics. But I’m heartened by Al Kooper’s story of how he blagged his way onto the recording sessions for “Like a Rolling Stone” having never previously touched a Hammond. Yet his simple, mainly chordal, accompaniment made the track! It’s worth checking out the Dylan Bootleg Series Vol 12 “The Best of the Cutting Edge, 1965-1966” to see how the song grew from the original plonky waltz to the epic final version - for which, incidentally, the isolated tracks are included. Love these livestreams, man, & really hope you’re inspired to do some more.

      Oh yeah Steve! It was a fun idea! I'm not very good at keys, so it was a fun experiment.
      I'll have to check out Al Kooper.

    You are definitely an awesome teacher my brother. Its great to see how you approach writing, and recording Music. Its very true Music theory is essential for a bit more freedom and fluidity in what you may want to achieve. I agree with you its good to watch others play. I saw how to use the 7th and 9th in a passing chord. Awesome

    Can you make a video on a daily practice routine please?

    • @ScottPaulJohnson
      @ScottPaulJohnson  8 месяцев назад +1

      I don't believe there is a one size fits all practice routine for anyone - it's all about what your goals are and what you hope to accomplish. But I might make a video about that concept.

    Your videos are great, but of course you can play the 3rds of the chords!

    • @ScottPaulJohnson
      @ScottPaulJohnson  8 месяцев назад +1

      In the bass? Of course you can. It’s hard to make general rules or starting points when there are so many exceptions, but for people just learning to make a bass line, I recommend R 5 7 for minor and R 5 6 for major as starting points, or lenses to view bass lines. Most iconic bass lines I can think of emphasize those notes more than any other.

    • @muitosabao
      @muitosabao 8 месяцев назад

      @@ScottPaulJohnson yes, on the bass. of course I get that, but there's a lot of people learning watching these, I guess. and you make it sound like it's a forbidden note :)

    • @ScottPaulJohnson
      @ScottPaulJohnson  8 месяцев назад

      @@muitosabao Thats fair! Thanks for pointing out that I wasn't clear enough. Maybe I should do a little video about it. I do think a low E on a C chord doesn't sound nice unless its in passing, like moving to an F Major chord (bass note E to F), but I could draw out the nuances. Also, when I'm teaching the basics, I'd rather start by forbidding certain things than drawing out all the exceptions where nearly everything is acceptable.

    Scott, these are just great bud, love the interaction, format and delivery, so cool! So much to learn. A huge part of doing this is just doing it. It really helps seeing someone make decisions - I must admit you make these decisions so calmly :D

    • @ScottPaulJohnson
      @ScottPaulJohnson  8 месяцев назад +1

      Don’t be precious! It’s not permanent marker. You can always try something and see if you like it. Make a decision based on what the song needs, not based on what you want.

    SPJ! I listened to Pennies on Spotify and you NEED to release more! Music should make you FEEL something, it should be shoving emotions into your soul, sadly it’s losing that effect nowadays. But YOUR song made me feel something! You’re great at teaching and I’m sure you have lots going on but release some more songs! Intentionally ofc, peace and love!

    Watching creative spark turn into a song is super cool, and it's really helpful to see your process, Scott. My biggest take away from this one: Instead of perfecting a part before you record, get a general idea down, comp it a few times. Select the bits you like the best, get those under your fingers, then do your real take. It seems like that approach could allow more creativity cuz you're capturing the idea while it's fresh and still malleable, instead of locking into something that might not work as well in the greater context. That might help with my tendency to make parts overly complex without ideally serving the song.

    • @ScottPaulJohnson
      @ScottPaulJohnson  8 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah! Write it in context and don’t be precious about it
