Another great video by Peter Masella who is the most underrated aviation broadcaster on RUclips. He’s finally starting to get the recognition he well deserves. Follow him!
I have experienced this unique approach and landing many times. I always enjoy the sudden drop after Balboa Park and the freeway. It is really fun to watch 777s and occasional 747s fly into SAN.
Always a pleasure landing into San Diego. I’ve done it countless times but it never loses its luster. I especially enjoy flying right over Balboa Park just before landing. Thank you for posting this approach!
My best half, meaning my wife, is from San Diego and I've flown into SAN (Lindbergh Field) many times over. It's a beautiful arrival with everything one could ask. I'll tell you, though, if you want to make my day, take me to Cabrillo National Monument, at the tip of point Loma, do me off, leave me alone for the full day, then come and get me at closing time and I'll be the happiest person you could find. That is one gorgeous place.
My only experience landing here was at night in 2011 on a Delta 738 from CVG. I was a bit freaked out by how low we seemed on final and how hard we braked but I would absolutely love it now. Best approach in the US hands down.
Hey Peter, no shout out to Coronado Island as you passed the causeway at 19:00 mins ? Had the best holiday at the Hotel Del some year back. Love your videos.
Technically he could do that. There’s an area set aside for watching plane spotting, on the far east end of the airport property, on Harbor drive. I do believe you can also watch pilots taxiing the runway, getting in position for takeoff. maps.app.goo.gl/o9zTEgXnKaoaypSs9?g_st=ic
What a gorgeous view heading into SAN. My brother has extensive training in airline mechanics, he was a manager at Oakland Airport. He always said that out of all the airlines he has worked on (and flew on), Alaska is his favorite airline.
I dropped a friend off at KSAN two weeks ago, and they had just closed the parking lot at Terminal One. I hope you have a smooth departure from the Departure Terminal One, which hasn't been closed yet. I sometimes spot at Lindbergh, but loved that skyscraper view when flying in to the city.
Living in San Diego for 64 years. I love flying in and out of our airport. So glad Alaska Airlines is growing - they are the best airline. San Diego is not as dense as you think. It is broken up by many canyons.
You lucked out and got a glimpse of the massive hospital ship USNS Mercy coming back in to port right before you land... she doesn't get underway very often so it's a rare sight!
There is a restaurant at 2550 Fifth Ave 12th floor, San Diego which has an outdoor dining balcony that captures the landing of flights very close to eye level. As the planes pass by you can also view their landing from the same deck. The landings are neat because you can spot the moment of tires to runway with a puff of rubber smoke.
The last time I flew to San Diego was in 1974 -- it's been a long time! I remember that some pilots described the approach as "picking your way through midtown Manhattan for a landing in Central Park." (P.S. I'm off to Italy tomorrow -- UA EWR-MXP 772; wish me luck!)
Superb...! Peter, your enthusiasm is --- contagious !!! Great narration and elucidation of the detail in your engaging style, pre-emptively answering all the questions ! Breath-taking view of the downtown just short of touchdown ! Grooooovy !!!!😄
I really love that approach into San Diego. I got to fly in at night. Also since the airport is right by downtown, whenever a plane takes off you can hear the sound rattle through the buildings.
@@annamartin1154 things to do in San Diego; Sea World, world famous San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park, Summer Pops on the Bay, Balboa Park with many museums, USS Midway museum, Coronado Island with The historic Hotel Del Coronado, world class Mission Bay Park and the beaches just to name a few.....
Former Boeing... Love the smart 'planners' who put a multistory parking garage smack dab in way just before runway... been in and out of SAN multiple times... both on 27 and 9... last time in was on 27 during high winds, driving rain, and wind shear... completely blind... didn't know if we were going to land in parking garage or on runway... very happy it was runway...
In San Diego '75 (US Navy), left San Diego for good in 2014, but go back for yearly annual at Vet Hospital in La Jolla. Fly ida y vuelta Puebla to Tijuana, hoof it across to San Diego Trolley to points north. Flight at airport in Puebla (foot of the active volcano El Popocatepetl, 17K+ ft) is something at right about 7013 ft above sea level runway to almost sea level in Tijuana... both of which would make for a great video. Did the Alaska flight once San Diego to Seattle which was awesome as it was clear in Seattle and the pilot gave us quite a show. Gracias por tu video. Safe travels! RT sends, envía, Colonia Centro Histórico, Puebla, México.
Have you flown into PDX on a sunny day approach from the east over Mount Hood, the Columbia river gorge over the city of Portland and along side the Columbia river to touchdown. 🤩🌹🌹🌹
I always love seeing the aircraft carriers in port coming into KSAN. Unfortunately a dirty window also ruined some of my footage from the auto focus. Keep 'em coming!
I grew up in North Park in the 60s and 70s with Delta DC-8's and AA 707's making sharp banking turns towards the the airport at 1000 feet above my house. In those days you did not have to go all the way to the mountains to make your 180 back to RWY 27. Fun times.
The next time you are coming to SAN, send me a message. I'll take you to the top of symphony Tower where you can look just a few blocks north to the planes passing below you on final approach. The view from the buildings is just as exciting as the view from the landing planes.
I know this airport. _Went there in 1998. I don't remeber if I was travelling in the left or ritht seat but the experience was good. Not as good as La Guardia , I have to admit. Watching you now from Terrassa, Near Barcelona, Spain.
I watch this and I wonder how different this approach is than the one taken September 1978 from LAX when PSA 182 collided with a Cessna. At the time, the worst US. aviation disaster until about half a year later in Chicago. I think it’s the same approach.
You should look at Tijuana International Airport next, with its unique Cross Border Xpress (CBX) terminal on the U.S. side that bridges the international border to leave from the Mexico side.
I see this every time I’m down at Balboa park (multiple times a week). Since I’m usually down there around the time the first round of morning flights are coming in (around 9:30) I definitely get my share of plane spotting. If you want the closest view you can get from the park, go over to the playground, across the street from the naval hospital.
Do you happen to have any videos of commercial flights over the Grand Canyon? On a flight from Seattle to Phoenix, I had an unbelievable view of the Grand Canyon at sunset. It was by far the most memorable flight I’ve ever been on. Wish I had pictures of that.
Excellent video! It's refreshing to hear this kind of unadorned enthusiasm. Incidentally, I have landed (or rather, the pilots landed) on Runway 09 several times. But, as you say, most of the approaches (ninety percent, in fact) come from the east and use Runway 27.
I agree i sit on the left side to see what Navy ships are at NAS North Island Base i get choked up seeing this. Then Leaving i sit on the right side so i can see the old Navy Boot camp Base and Marine Corp Training base Love me some San Diego.
Great video! Footage looked very good on final despite the window issues. Also wanted to point out Gillespie Field (SEE) around 14:56. It's one of the other GA airports out in El Cajon. Thanks for sharing!
YTZ is absolutely the best landing view in all of North America. It should definitely be on your list. Sit on the right side out of EWR on Porter airlines. You will be amazed.
After previously giving you a bit of a ribbing about the lighted Yankee Stadium I now offer a sincere thanks for showing the apartment complex I live in at 12:42.
Yes, San Diego is a beautiful beautiful clean City when compared to LA and San Francisco. The second largest city in California and nineth in the country. However, it is now becoming extremely expensive and unaffordable to live here no matter from which perspective you see it. A lot of people are now migrating to other cities and it is also within my plans hopefully next year.

hey one question, yesterday i was in flightradar 24 and i saw a 747 from atlas air in the coronado island, is that normal or rare?

Thrilling wingviews over the city Peter.Gorgeous video
Thank you!
Experienced this landing about twice in 2020. Its more thrilling if you are noe expecting it and its a surprise. I was blown away!
Cool!
I have never been to San Diego but would love to go just for the view also. I will have to plan trip after I see what I can do there.

The touchdown zone for any airport is within a displaced threshold. A plane can use this for takeoffs but not landings.
Love the videos! Do Toronto!

Is Alaska the only airline that uses the 737-900 without winglets?
The pilot monitoring must’ve been having a rough day or something. There isn’t a hint of friendliness in his voice for any of these radio calls lol
lol
EXCELLENT VIDEO❤️

Just some feedback, IDK if you have time or not but it would be cool to see an animation of Approach charts. Great video though!

I didn't know they only had 1 runway. That is a good size metro area for only 1 runway.
I don't think there is any space for an additional runway!
That was really cool. 😀♫♪♪
It sure is!
my home town... mira mar is where the top jet fighters aka TOP GUN this is where the first TOP GUN movie was filmed
Cool!
That's my home airport. I joke that I can just about watch people showering in their apartments from my plane window on approach RY 27!
Ha!
Fun Fact: MCAS Miramar was where they filmed the OG Top Gun edit: spelling
Cool!
You couldn’t make out the original SoCal controller due to bleed over.
San Diego Airport only has 1 runway.I believe it is the busiest single runway Airport in the world
Marine Corps is pronounced marine "core", not marine corpse....thanks for your time with the video!
Thanks for that! I always get that one wrong!
You flew on a Non-ER 737.

I would never fly on Alaska Airlines. It's too risky. They've had multiple crashes in the past. Great video though, thanks.
This is really a great airport to land. So glad to see it featured. Thanks Peter!

Correct. This video was filmed when masks were required by mandate. This is an old video.
