    Just received the O-Spot4Pro and currently building out the profiles. No prior O-Spot versions but I do have the TGIF hotspot. Planning on doing some testing afterwards on this new gem, but so far so good with sound quality. Thanks Jason for the work you do in promoting this hobby!!

    I have charged the Openspot 4 - six times after this video I timed the last two charges and it went 10 hours and then 9:57 hour - AMAZING!!!!

    It would be nice if they had an external SMA antenna connection as well. When will someone come out with FM analog to digital mode? THAT would be a game changer.

    I would hope I could get this to work. I had no success with pi-star. It didn't like my WI-FI router that doubles as my cable TV modem.

    Based on your overview, I just ordered the 4 Pro. I'm new to DMR, so I wanted something easy-to-use and portable. So it is worth the extra price tag. But is was less expensive than the PiStar one sold by Bridgecom Systems.

    I was also in the "2nd wave" of orders, mine arrived today in the UK. It is a OpenSpot 4 Pro as I have an ICOM radio with D-STAR. Apparently the s/w codecs which convert from D-Star to other formats are not great, and the only good way is using a special chip which costs $.

    Does this Openspot-4 support dual band? ie Can I use it with my FM handheld Radio to connect to digital world? If not then can you suggest hotspot which receive/transmit FM and convert to digital and vice versa...I do not wants to invest in digital radio now but can invest in hotspot....Kesh VK2FKES Thanks

    Nice preview, Jason. Several years ago I found an original Openspot at a hamfest in the box for $50 and am still using it. I've been wanting to upgrade. Looking forward to seeing you in Huntsville. AE5DW.

    I have the new Open Spot 4 pro and it is fabulous! It was a little tricky to get it to switch back on after I left my WY-FI, it switches to my IPhone 13 then shut it down. There is a procedure that needs to take place with the I Phone 13’s personal hotspot system to get it to work again. Once you have the sequence down it is a piece of cake to restart everything when you are not at you WY-FY. Great audio, great battery life, great size and GREAT support from Shark RF. I love mine. Thanks for letting me comment. de Rick KS9V

    No real reason to upgrade to the 4 Pro if you currently have a 3. A bigger battery, faster downloads, and extra profiles aren’t huge selling features, at least to me. Nothing truly new and nothing the 3 can’t do, which includes audio playback online.

    aprs-is is the internet. same as running aprsdroid on your phone. you basically skip rf and just report straight to the internet which can transmit through local igates if you need to relay a message.

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  2 года назад

      Correct, that's what Pi-Star uses. My comment was that it would be cool if this was also an IGATE

  • @raykiii

    Pardon my ignorance, but isn't APRS already a Digital mode?

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  2 года назад +1

      Not exactly. APRS is packet radio that can be transmitted over analog or digital FM transmitters (and others). But this device doesn't TRANSMIT APRS, nor does it listen for APRS packets

    • @raykiii
      @raykiii 2 года назад

      @@HamRadio2 Yeah and I use Packet for RMS on 2m. I need to switch to VARA for the speed.

      It’s expensive if you already have a hotspot for sure, it’s my first and gets my one HT from Dstar to all the other modes so the cost balances out

    why not just a DMR radio + MMDVM hospot?
    a whole lot cheaper and you can do cross digital modes as well!
    heck, for 360 bucks you can get a laptop PC dedicated to Dude-Star and do all these modes from that! hahah

    • @robertkeller9828
      @robertkeller9828 2 года назад +2

      That's what I'm talking about! Hams need to stop geeking out on digital and concentrate on RF and a return to CW instead!
      PS, you can find suitable off-lease laptops for 75 to 100 bux that can be used for alot MORE than just transcoding
      Ham audio.
      PS, I am a retired network operator AND tv master control op.

    Call audio playback means you can listen live to the feed of whatever reflector or whatever you want to call it you are connected to. You can monitor on the computer instead of having to have a radio (you can't talk without the radio). This pertains to Pro OpenSpot 4 version only as I don't have the regular version and don't know the specs vs what the pro has. Overall, I like it. I preordered on the first batch and have 2 of them and use it every day.

    Not sure I see the value over PiStar.

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  2 года назад +1

      Pi-star is quirky. It works but you have to fiddle with it. This OS is much more stable. But that might not be enough to justify the purchase.
      Also the OS is the only one that does DSTAR transcoding

    • @ChipEckardt
      @ChipEckardt 2 года назад

      I ordered. I am curious if it is any better compared to my Pi-Star. I do favor open source in many cases.

    • @chrisgaeth

      @@HamRadio2 I believe that the hardware is doing the transcoding not the OS/software.

    The HELL with all these different digital "modes" settle on one or two, and find a way to combine their capabilities Waaaay cheaper than this!
    I remember when a 212 MEGABYTE hard drive finally was under 300 bux.
    Everyone went nutz over that.
    Not even a doorstop now. This will be the same drawer queen in 12-18 months!
    Some witty person is already out there writing code to use existing hardware to do all this.
    Spend the almost 400 bux on a good TUBE HF rig because it will be ALL that works in a SHTF scenario! THEN, Buy a key and learn FRICKIN' CODE!

      Funny, I bought my OpenSpot 3 in 2019. Its been well over 3 years. Its still not stopping my door. lol And learning code is not for everyone.... tube radios is not for everyone... including me. Never have I been interested in learning code. Been a ham since 2013.
