Hi Dr Aidan, I was wondering if you had any resources on the symbolism/analysis of the hallucinations and apparitions within Macbeth. I just binged all your videos for my upcoming exam and they are very helpful. Thank you!
I don't have anything on video at the moment, but here is my reading. If you are talking about the apparitions in Act 4 Scene 1, the first (the armed head) has been taken to foreshadow Macbeth being beheaded by Macduff; the second (the bloody child) probably foreshadows Macduff as the child born by Caesarean section who will kill Macbeth (there are other readings but this is the most likely to my mind); thirdly, the child with the bough represents Malcolm, who is the rightful branch of the royal tree (inheriting from his father Duncan), and who will become the future king. In addition, Malcolm will also carry branches from Birnam Wood to Dunsinane. Lastly, the parade of eight kings - although overtly meaning that the descendants of Banquo (via Fleance) will become future kings - also implicitly refers to the fact that James 1 (the king at the time the play was written) thought himself to be a descendant of Banquo; so one can imagine James watching this play and seeing his rule being validated. I hope this is useful and if you have any further questions do write back.
Another one which I think is good is when Malcolm says to Macduff: 'Angels are bright still, though the brightest fell'. Satan (Macbeth) being the 'brightest' having deceived God (Duncan - appointed by God) until he 'fell' (killed Duncan - tipped the Natural Order).

Yes. Interesting that Malcolm thinks that, despite the fall of the favourite, there is still hope to be found in the goodness of others.
