- This is a review of the Keysight DSOX1204G oscilloscope. The DSOX1204A is the same but without the generator built-in. There is also the EDUX1002A and EDUX1002G educational versions as well.
This is part of the Keysight 1000 Oscilloscope series.
Also see the educational Oscilloscope that I reviewed:

Nice review! We love the long form stuff, and we're pretty fond of this scope.
Thank you! It was fun playing with! Very nicely thought out! I just saw that an upgrade to the FRA came out. Man, I’d like to see that! ;)
I looooooove your gear and hope I can afford it some day. I'm only a hobbyist with mental illness so it's a reach. I dont get gear envy though, I'm just happy to see it being used in learned hands. Seeing Daniel's impression of power supply ripple has me in splits every time I think of it. Thanks for the great content yourselves.
The best RUclips walk thru video of the 1200x-series. I really apricate your time to do this long and in depth scope reviews!
Quick Note/update: on the latest 1200x-gen (new 2-ch scopes in black released now in 2020, and with latest 2020-firmware for this 1204A/G scope) they have all full access to the complete memory of the MegaZoom IV ASIC (now 4 M points in total; 2 Mp/ch for 2ch scope/mode; 1 Mp/ch for 4ch mode). The previous 1100x-series (white versions), and with the previous firmware for this1204A/G (probably what you had during your review), only had 1 M points - in total (which is quite small by modern standards). So now we have at least four times more memory, and full usage of the MZ IV ASIC.
I as really happy to see them increase the memory - even though it is not a ton - it does make it much more usable. Great scopes and a great price - for one of the big boys. I think if they tried a sale price at 30% off - they might see that they could kill the market using their name and competing strongly with the low cost scopes. I appreciate your feedback - thank you!
This is nice long review. I like this form that demonstrates what the instrument is capable to do and how UI is used. I would like to mention that newer models of DSOX1000 series (check the S/N) can be upgraded by firmware and keysight finally released software decode options for free, enabled at least 2Mpts memory and 200k waveform update rate. You have to pay only for bandwidth options.
That is awesome news!! Thank you for sharing that!
All software decode options? Do they give discounts to students? All I saw was full price on their website, and I think Newark also at full price.
I just purchased one of these , hope it gets here before christmas
I hope so too! Let us know how you like it. Thanks for letting us know. Great scope!
I have just found out that RUclips has "un-liked" a lot of videos, including this video. I like every video you make and in particular those I comment on. But this video is no longer made with my like. I do of course re-like it:-)
Wow - that's not good that RUclips would do that. I wonder if it is just bugs. I have spent hours responding to comments - only to find down the road that my comments were not taken and all that time was lost. Plus, there's the people who took time to write - and were probably disappointed not to see my response...
@@KissAnalog Wow! That's terrible when your comment doesn't get saved.
but RUclips has gotten worse every year and I don't think they care about it!
I don't know if I missed it but you didn't try the serial bus features on this device, i've been using it to solve an i2C problem on a bus and its proven really handy, it also does UART, SPI, RS232 and even tells you what each byte is in hexidecimal on the measurements. It's a really nice scope.
Thanks for the great feedback! I had to return it as it was just a loaner - so I didn't get a chance to use it:(
LOL oh, and I who thought you only could get Keysight by searching in dumpsters:-)
Even that I am not in the market for a new scope, I do enjoy the whole review. :-)
One thing I do really appreciate is the fact that you have used time to learn the instrument, not just open and stumble around! I do also like that you take the "same" time to go trough the important features, no matter if it is "Hong Ling Crash" or "Oh holy gear", please please do never change that!! :-)
Thank you! I hope to have people like you to keep me on track;)
Hi Eddie, I like the practical exhibition an explanation of how this works. Thanks so much for the video. it was great
Hi Eddie, Awesome review thanks a lot.
Thanks for your support!!
Great and very detailed review of the scope. Quick question, you are using the hantek current probe but, how did you get the scope to show the result in Amperes? thanks in advance
Thanks for your feedback! I appreciate you! The settings for the probe channel allows you to set the x10 or what you need and to change the V to A from what I remember. This was just loaned to me so I had to return the scope;)
Great job. I really like that keysight scope.
It is a nice compact scope with a lot of features. But, I do like my GW Instek better - even if they were the same price.
@@KissAnalog I liked the FFT had center freq and span. Did not like the lack of scales. I am assuming since the Instek is a MDO with a SA, you really do not need a FFT on Instek? The Siglent seemed not so good. I have a more advanced Siglent and will try to reproduce your test 1K, 2v Sq.Wave?
looks like a hell of a scope, how does it connect to ac mains with its probes, meaning does it have decent isolation so it doesn't blow up when you plug a probe into it, it certainly has a lot of nice features.
RonPaulgirls Yes it is a great scope, but still no isolation at the inputs. So if you are doing mains work - care must be taken. HV Differential probes are a great choice.
@@KissAnalog thanks for all your work.....i was going to experiment with a hantek 65 dollar current clamp connected to a hantek 5000 series to see how this ac monitoring might work.....and if the whole thing blows up, i'm only out a few hundred dollars, in which case i'll upgrade to equipment designed for ac analysis......
yea..now i'm getting it the Micsig differential probe seems to be the reasonable choice
RonPaulgirls I think with the Hantek current probe and the Micsig differential probe - you and your equipment should be safe;). Degaussing the current probe often though...
@@KissAnalog right, thanks the micsig probe looks like the ticket, the hantek probe looks like too much of a hassle with the degaussing and so on....the miscig probe looks like at least a decent entry level probe that i can experiment with till i learn what i really need.......thanks again for all of your info,
it looks like the sane combo would be something like a handheld fluke or equivalent for maybe around 1500 dollars with isolation and a flash drive, which could then go into something like the keysight or whatever with advanced waveform spectrum analysis features or whatever....the handheld part being important for quick data collection
dear sir, thanks a lot for nice demonstration. i'm trying to visualize RS232 using DSOX1204A, but unable to do it. Can you provide me any technical support to solve the problem
They do have an option (DSOX1EMBD) that provides the triggering option. Otherwise I think it’s pins 2 and 3 that you monitor.
Siglent 1204e-x $749. DSOX $2014. Many 4 channel scopes suffer the dreaded "select o' channel and putz around method" for moving your channels about, rather than have vertical positioning controls for each channel.
You are right - and that's one of the reasons why I went with the GW Instek MDO. I don't mind a slightly wider footprint for the ease of functionality. The Siglent 4 channel was on my list too as I think they are great scopes.
Good work bro. Please give me link to buy this and how much is it cost?
Thank you Chamike! Here is the link; amzn.to/2I9dA0l
I have the same scope except 70 mhz DSO1102G good scopes hope you like it.
Thank you.. Great review..
Thank you!
Ah! you shouldda shown the serial buses decoding options as well!
Yes you’re right, I should have done another video highlighting the digital signals. Just ran out of time as this was on loan...
29 Watts consumed Thats Maybe 10% or les from my old Analog 60 MHz Scope . And more more options the Default mode button is one off the best
Yes Bert, these new scopes carry a lot of power with less power;)
Good comment 😀
How to connect it to PC screen and control? screen is too small!
Thanks for your feedback! It is a bit small;) I wish I had this scope to try that. It was a loaner and I had to return it...
@@KissAnalog analog discovery is great! Try that!
Everyone watching is presumably is familiar with things like phantom power. It doesn't take 2 to 5 minutes to explain that you are going to turn it off and check for phantom power. What I want, and maybe this will eventually get there, is some way to distingish this from Rigol and Siglent.
1. Fan noise is apparently less (better) than either.
2. Overall appearance is nice; dark grey neither white (distracting) or black (cannot see the knobs).
3. Interrupt...
I've been looking at this scope, but I don't know if the RIGOL -as the $$ is concerned- isn't a better choice? I like their brand, but they charge for it! Yes, they should lower the price! Thanks! Almost forget to tell you that I also follow this guy, he is using your demo scope: ruclips.net/video/IyGwvGzrqp8/видео.html
Tony Fleming You make some great points! I was actually surprised that they offered this series at the low price that they did. I think they jumped out in front of Tektronix. Thank you for the link!
@@KissAnalog In these days we are spoiled with great stuff and LOWER and LOWER prices on Scopes and other electronics! If you compare it to the past, we live in the heaven of electronics! But we are also very frugal and buy what we can for the lowest $$, so Rigol is OK scope and Keysight must lower prices. They do have a great interface and that is a must but the other less expensive scopes are learning and implementing all they can. I'm running out of money and space for my stuff! ha ha ha
Tony Fleming You are so right! But why are diff and current probes so expensive still?!
@@KissAnalog Because THEY CAN! ha ha ha One day it all will change! It needs a real competition!
Gostei muito do video parabéns .
Thank you! I appreciate that!
Keysight 200mhz $2014, 1mpt, 1GS/S all channels, 50,000 wfms 20mhz generator, bode plot, 1mpts
Siglent SDS1204X-E 200 Mhz $750 1GS/two channels, 500ms/s all 4 channels. 100,000- 400000 wfms, bode plot, no generator. 14mpts.
What can we say - Siglent is kicking but! Then there’s money left for current probes and differential probes;)
Hi, Great review there. I am about to put my money on DSOX1204G 70MHz as my first scope. Wise decision?
You are way off on your prices homeslice. The $1216 is for the 70MHz version. The 200MHz model is a whopping $2000! You had my hopes up. I thought I could get the 100MHz spec for just under $1k based upon your info. Nope! Out of reach for me... So will go with a Siglent instead!
EEKS! Thank you! The pricing that I found was confusing/misleading! I see the price, before tax, is $1916 for the 200MHz and $1516 for the 100 MHz, and $1216 for the 70MHz all with the generator option. But - don’t go by me - obviously I’m having trouble figuring out the pricing! Thanks for this info!!
GW Instek is a great option too.
Hi Tony, I think your video really can be benefited via some editing and even better with script before you start shooting
Was this comment meant for Tony Fleming? I’m continually working on improving - it’s crazy how much time goes into this😬
@@KissAnalog I know, my videos are RAW as it gets, but I don't have the time for polishing it up, sorry! My fried Hari Wiguna, he has also a channel - it is insayne how much time it takes to make it perfect. I can't do that, but good suggestion. Have a great day!
I am no expert!! But if anyone can use my 16 years of knowledge producing radio and TV, please just ask, there are a lot of neat tricks on how to save time, make recording easier and get easier time with editing. :-)
But do also remember that a real great made documentary is about max 5 min of useful recording for every hour and 4 hours recherche and planning for every 1 hour recording. So 30 min finished is at least 6 hours recording and 24 hours of planning when you want a well made documentary! On the other hand is editing a fast-ish job:-)
It is crazy time consuming! But raw is good too! ;)
@@friedmule5403 I understand and I appreciate your help - and few others - but I'm not into the video editing due to time and other issues. That doesn't mean that I'm not gonna take your advice into consideration! I know you are trying to help me - thanks for that!
