Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson quietly put together one of the best offenses in the NFL. Thanks to Johnson, Jared Goff has put up some of the best numbers of his career, and the Lions are geared up to make a playoff run in 2023.

  • @JakeBrennanYo

And they went and drafted 2 guys in LaPorta and Gibbs who are great at lining up as receivers and did it frequently in college. Instead of the single mismatch with Amon-ra they were looking for last year all the time, you’re gonna have 2-3 of those mismatches available in those 2 WR sets. LaPorta is quick and fluid enough with his size to handle a DB on him and likes lining up all the way out wide, and Gibbs or st.brown on a LB is just automatic. When Jamo is back and defenses have to cover everything over the top, we should really see everything click underneath. Offensively they could really be something special this year.

One little noted and when noted often ridiculed thing about this offense, Jared Goff. The backhand insult of "game manager" (not referenced in this video!) is silly because game management is the most important job of a pro QB. With a schemer like Ben, you need a genuine bona fide QB to run things. Lovce this vid Billy, you got a new subscriber!

  • @bmattification
    @bmattification 10 месяцев назад +9

One thing to also note: one of the biggest problems with the run game last year was broken/missed tackles. With Swift hampered with a shoulder injury, and Williams (who wasn't shy about contact) being dragged to the ground constantly, both RBs had 17 broken tackles on the year.
David Montgomery had 20 on his own. Gibbs had 104 over three years in the ACC/SEC. Detroit prioritized players that can evade and break tackles to help extend runs. It's not outside of possibility that this run game is going to be exceptionally better with players that (hopefully) aren't injured as much and can help extend runs to make 2nd/3rd downs smaller.

Yeah, far from it. The Goff trade really turbo charged that team and their GM, who served as assistant GM with the Rams during their rebuild, learned everything about drafting and assembling players for a title run. He was, IMO, why the Goff/Stafford trade even happened the way it did. The Rams had that deal done BEFORE the other teams had finished refining their offers, one being the 9ers. It still makes me smile that the 9ers got screwed on that deal. I HATE the 9ers. HATE!!!

While I'm still semi-angry about Campbell & Johnson being unable to adjust to the RBs that they had forcing them to spend a high draft pick & cap $ getting replacements (is it that they _couldn't_ or wouldn't?) I at least can refer to this as The Reason Why even if I don't necessarily think that being unable to adapt is A Strength.

Watching these, this is the First Time that I feel that I'm watching plays that work better in the NFL than in college. What I mean by that is in college, one of the ways we identify a Great Defender is that they run to the ball. Here, that's not happening.
That isn't Johnson's doing really. It's simply become that most DCs over-think & consider their defenses to be Lost Sheep who need guidance & thus provide too much of it. Johnson's merely exploiting this. Nothing here looks terribly clever.
I love how our host points to how the Lions are trying to do more with less. _That _*_IS_*_ genius_ & it won't be fun for me to see it win because I simply can't seem to get behind these Lions.
      I'm not sure why.

A big change as well with Goff running this system with the Lions is that despite having his fair share of timely play action passes which he was used to doing with the Rams, the empty backfield sets helps keep his eyes on the coverage pre and post snap. The obvious mismatches created also key in on who Goff's big reads would be. This would also become more pivotal when both his RBs are solid pass catchers as well.

Last off season goff and Johnson sat down and honestly analyzed what Goff does well and built around that. Mcvay wanted goff to be a robot. Mcvay even wanted to call the protection. That's why the rams ran no huddle. The Rams weren't going fast. Mcvay just wanted everyone lined up so he could give goff direct orders. That killed Goff's development

Amon-Ra's rushing opportunities were mostly gadget plays, and Gibbs' electric speed should give him the nod on those plays from now on. Related to this, Detroit's RBs didn't catch too many passes because D'Andre Swift has the injury resistance of A(lways)D(damaged) and Jamaal Williams was more of a classic ground-and-pound guy. Gibbs should get plenty of receiving touches this year.

If you have an elite run game... All you need is a qb like goff who is not gunna turn the ball over... Now its all about how that defense is gunna perform... Thats the mystery...

Appears Detroit will be seeking a replacement for OC soon.
I thought Johnson would depart a year ago, but now it is all assured as the Lions O became super dangerous adding Gibbs along with TE/Y LaPorta. Detroit still did not have a dangerous deep X except Williams who is in and out of the rotation at times.
Mark Brunell ..........., it makes you wonder an ex-NFL QB might not have the expertise Johnson brought to the table.
Tanner Engstrand.....not enough resume to go with the expectations but maybe he knows how to run this system
Jared Goff.................give him the play call making ability as he knows how this works first hand

The nfl is circular. So they aren’t re inventing the wheel here. They’ve established a power running attack to battle against nickel and dime defense, smaller pass covering backers, pass rush oriented d linemen. It’s not genius rather an effective counter to the style currently in vogue within the league.
You mentioned that they took advantage of green bays light front. This is the standard which is why their run heavy approach is effective. It also protects Jared Goff quite a bit and promotes home run hitting play action play calls after pulling the back side defense in by lulling them to sleep with heavy run play calls early on in the game.

Who do you see as a future NFL head coach besides Ben Johnson?

You can have a horrible team for a LONG time. As long as you keep hiring inept coaches and management. Once you start pluggimg the right leaders in (GM and Head coach for starters) then you start to see youre team on the ups. Bills and Bengels for examples. The Lions are on their way but lets see how far they go. Championship? Dont think so quite yet but theyll be up there in the NFC

Great video. Goff gets too much hate though. Lucky to have such great coaching, but he still has to perform.
