    I wonder why you did not mention another cause of lexical importation from another language. When England was conquered by William Duke of Normandy, English as a language lost its status. As a result many words of French origin went into English either replacing the original English or in addition to the original English word. So for example, the word "army" comes from French and replaces the original English word "here" and the word "beef" comes from French and is used in addition to "cow", "bull" and "ox" which come from Old English, but with a different meaning.

      The way I understand it is this lecture focuses on characteristics of lexical changes rather than reasons of lexical change.
