  • The downside of an earthquake is that many things get broken from falling or having things fall on them. In the case of this dbx 118, it was in the wrong place at the wrong time and got dripped on by roof juice. I had to disassemble and clean up. In the process I discovered a malfunction. It was not leak related, but needed fixed none the less. After determining the problem was on one of the small plug-in type boards (3 cold solder joints) I reassembled, and here is the demo showing all is well. The dbx 118 is a unique device and does stuff that makes the audio experience something special.

DBX a name from the past . I like all old studio rack gear - great hands on . and turning to extremes is something everyone should do = bend and test limits to create - go ahead and break the rules !!, good vid

Music today is digitally compressed. Turning on my dbx 3bx expands my audio to more realism

Totally Agree! My first experience with expansion was with a friend's dbx 117. I dogged him until he sold it to me. This would have been back in 1975. Since then, many devices have come and gone. My crown jewel is the dbx 5BX-DS.

Never played with any dbx stuff. Total noob question but when and why would you use this thing. Great video though.

This is an effects box and deemed unnecessary by "purists". It's mainly for fun and trying to get a bit more realism from your stereo. Stretching the limits of normal audio while going for the WOW factor. If I can play my system and get someone to say "WOW"... my job, and the dbx's, is done.

Can you provide any more info on the mod you did? That's exactly what I need but the only mods I can find involve changing op amps, which I don't think I want to do... Anything would be great! :) These are cool units. I got mine for really cheap and I want to give it a little more life.

I went to gearstlutz web page and found a thread about the 118, and the schematic there jarred my memory. The mod I'm referring to involves C10 (capacitor 10) on the schematic. What I did to the mod was install 2 switches which enabled adding and removing the effect of C10. One of the switches adds a bit of capacitance, adding time to the attack, and the other switch removes the all capacitance, making the attack time as fast as the audio signal allows. It's a barely perceptible effect, but it can be noticed on certain types of music. Classical music benefits from a slower attack and rock likes fast attack. It was an experiment. I hope this helps.

Being that these units are beginning to show their age, any number of problems could cause your symptoms. I would do the easy trouble shooting first. Power the unit and play some music through it. While the music plays, poke around on the boards and see what shakes out. If nothing happens with some poking, remove the vertical boards and inspect for cold solder joints. Be systematic in your troubleshooting. If it's something easy, it will reveal itself. Good fortune in your repair.

I'm not selling mine, but I did find them on e-bay. Here's a link for one of them. www.ebay.com/itm/DBX-118-Excellent-Vintage-Linear-Dynamic-Range-Enhancer-Expander-Compressor/224109194580?hash=item342df2ed54:g:yuoAAOSwQcJfKXbb
