I'm a shakuhachi player. My instrument has 5 holes in total. There are 7 hole shakuhachi, but they are primarily used for contemporary pieces. The traditional timbres used in honkyoku get lost when you add more holes. It's all about partial holing, slight embouchure differences and angle of airstream (meri/kari movements, the 'soul' of the instrument).
Sarah, I'm very impressed by the extreme top end of your playing on this bass. The plastic knick Yamaha ( which I love) is very tough above the high E.
Lovely, this! Easier on the stretch than the Tenor, but I still practice my Tenor, too! My daughter is working on her (c,f,c,f,g,f,g,f) exercises I gave her, so she will stop looking down at her fingers for placement, and I showed her how to find leaks. Looking forward to trying bass. Small 'typo'. I think there should be one more ledger line on the last notes? Your videos are all wonderful and so entertaining. Thanks so much xx
Wow that's some range! I saw you fluttering the fingers of your right hand on the low D#. Just getting the kinks out or creating vibrato? I was playing my Yamaha bas recorder - actually sampling it to play in a software sampler instrument - but I sure had problems with squeaks and over blowing. I know it takes work I used to play clarinet and some sax, but I'm thinking there are some leaks.
Oh, dear Sarah! What a beautiful video you made. I really wanted to have a Bass Recorder. In the end I bought a branded set: Kirstein, which set already included five recorders including one Bass Recorder. It was a very convenient offer compared to buying all the pieces separately, so I said to myself: now or never. Then I tried it and I understood that the fingering should be a little adapted to the instrument you have. Thanks for the explanation and for sharing. Bye Bye . . .
Loving that the three music channels I subscribe to (Team Recorder, TwosetViolin, and Davie504) are interacting... btw, we need a bass recorder solo to please Davie504 hehehe
I have the same Yahama bass, as do three of the other members of our group. Those fingerings are pretty much the same as I have been using except that I have never tried to go above the high G. The high Eb has been a problem for me and your fingering works well, so thanks for that especially.
So Sarah, I saw on your previous you were missing a book of repertoire for the unaccompanied bass recorder: "Solos for Bass Recorder, selected & arranged by Eric Haas." He arranged a bunch of music from medieval dances, ricercare, and even several movements from one of J.S. Bach's cello suites. It can be ordered from the Von Huene workshop. I'm having a bunch of fun playing through this repertoire. There are some easy pieces, but some of the music is not for the tame. I highly recommend this book.
Thanks for the video! When I first got a bass recorder I thought it was defective because of how out of tune the uh... What would be Bb on C recorders, was. Luckily, my efforts to learn 3rd octave fingerings had led me to a PDF with tons of alternate fingerings and that plus your own comments on how the best alternate fingerings vary by instrument made me think to Google information specific to the bass and I found my answer!
On my (early) plastic Yamaha, I can get the third register F# with 0- 1234 67. In other words, it looks like the first register Bb with a half-hole thumb. Thanks for a great video!

Hi Sarah, I'm so glad I found your channel! I have a Hohner "Konzert" bass recorder in F that I'm trying to learn how to play. It has 2 keys. The upper one covers the 4th and 5th holes, although the key where it covers the 5th is open. That means you can cover the 4th hole, or the 4th and the 5th, but not just the 5th, while leaving the 4th open. The lower key is a single one, for the 7th finger (to reach the bottom F) rather than a split key like yours. I can't figure out how to get that F#, since I'm supposed to half-cover the hole, which the single key doesn't seem to allow. Does that make sense? Is there some way to get that half-open effect with a key?
I just started out on the bassett/bass recorder and I am wondering if you could maybe share a fingering chart on all the notes? It is hard for me to see which fingers you are putting down and which ones are up. Thank you for this video, it's what first got me interested in the bass recorder :)

Hi Sarah. A favor. Can you record a video about the Yamaha fife YRF 21, please? Does it have an alternative fingering for sharp and flat notes? i’m looking for a used bass recorder, something like a moeck tuju. but i’m a bit confused with the keys. what are the main differences in having 3 or 5 keys?
Something I was randomly wondering recently is do B-flat tenor recorders exist? I know some low whistle makers have Bb bass whistles (pitched at Bb3 just below C4 yet above a Basset recorder in F3), but wonder if anyone done recorders in Bb to possibly align with other B-flat instruments better.
I think that's why the little 8 is at the top of the clef. In choir anyway, I know the tenors sometimes sing on a treble clef with an 8 at the bottom to signify that it's an octave lower that the standard treble clef. My guess is that the 8 at the top means it's an octave higher than the standard bass clef.
Angelica wouldn’t it be cool if they used a treble clef with the little 8 at the bottom for bass recorder so that you wouldn’t have to learn how to read bass clef 😉
Knowing only treble clef is not smart enough and that is not cool. In another video Sarah said recorder players must be smart because they can read bass clef. Well, actually Viola player is the smartest because they can read C clef. Haha, joke.
As the Bass Recorder is only a tone lower than the Violin, should it not be really called the Alto Recorder? And the Great Bass be called the Tenor? And Contrabass the Baritone? And Sub-contrabass the Bass?
Then what wpuld you call the tenor, alto, soprano and sopranino size recorders which are actually in much more common usage? It's also just convention from earlier times.
@@Rik77 You would have to re-name them as well in theory. But it does make sense to re-name the Recorder family to be more logical, just like the lower members of the Flute family has done.

I have the Woodi Bass Recorder and it will NOT play 2nd octave notes and the volume for the lower ones are very weak. I even tried masking tape on all holes to check for leaks. Still no good. Do you have any suggestions?
Amazing!
Would someone please tell me how to play the 3rd octive G#/Ab? 🤔
Would it be correct playing it just use the G key like on alto?
Do you practice 40hrs a day?
How can you close the golden holes on the bass recorder halfway?
