Having experimented with water mixable oils, gotta say, they are different. The paint itself is stickier and doesn’t flow like regular oil. Once you've 'thinned' the paint with water the water evaporates and leaves a somewhat sticky mess, unlike using regular solvent. Using the Windsor and Newton WMO 'mediums' i found they didn't rinse out easily with water, and in fact neither do the brushes. The thing i hate about wmo is the sticky texture of the paint out of the tube. It's easier just to use acrylics…esp Daler Rowney, which are better than most acrylics, including Golden.
That was my experience with WN Artisan. When I first tried them, I thought the texture was unappealing, especially when trying to mix colors with only water. I never tried their mediums. Then more recently I tried Cobra which has a completely different feel out of the tube. As do most of the other WMOs I've tried. And I only mix colors with mediums (not water). The thing about painting is that each artist has their own preferences and what works great for one doesn't work so well for another. That's why I think it's a good idea to try many different media (and different brands). Thanks for watching!
Have used both and really prefer the water mixable oils from Cobra. They do not seem sticky to me and blend well. No smell! Easy clean up, great results. Thanks Layne
I use water mixable oils for health reasons and find they are good, for me that is. I try various water mixable mediums such as water mixable thinners and with a little struggle they are ok. Can even keep the windows shut. One day maybe I'll pluck up courage to try alkyds as well..

I wonder if WMO'S are archival. Will they chip, crack, or become structurally weak if you use too much water.
