  • Battling unrelenting brackish winds, cold temperatures and days that are either too long or too short, we have a lot to contend with when growing fruit and vegetables in Shetland.
However, with all of this against us, growers in Shetland are determined to beat the odds. For to be able to serve up food that you have grown yourself is something that is incredibly satisfying.
The flavour difference in something that has been grown locally compared to that which has been mass produced for supermarket shelves is huge.
You can taste all the hard work and the fight against the elements that has gone into a locally produced product, leaving the supermarket product tasting watery and bland in comparison.
All the effort put in to improving the soil, planting out, trying to keep pests away, providing extra feed and the growers hope for sunshine, is encapsulated in that item on your plate.
While eating seasonally in Shetland might look a bit different than on the mainland, seasons change quickly, the growing season is short, we still delight and celebrate in what each harvest brings.
Thanks to Bo Simmons, The Sandwick Community Allotments and Jenny Watt for featuring in this short film.
