  • While I really liked this plot twist at first, the more I think about it the less sense it makes. Today I would like to talk about why Tingyun's death was so poorly written, and the easy changes that could've been made to rectify them.

If Tingyun Comes back to life or is revealed to be alive, this video will age like milk. If not, then I will continue to blast the narrative decision to make her both, a puppet of a greater villain, and the clone of a character we never met.
Please discuss in the comments. I wanna hear what everyone else thinks cause I know this is not a popular option to have.
oh and, how about a positive video next time yeah? Last thing I wanna do is become my brother

I remember being in a argument with someone on the internet about Tingyun's death. I jokingly said in one video something like "I don't see depression in it, so probably not HI3" because you know, HI3 is known to kill characters left, right, center.
And then someone said to me, "oh how about tingyun's death then" and I said that wasn't depressing at all. Sad moment for sure but compare to what HI3 give, it's not even close.

felt like they wanted the narrative value of both having Tingyun "die" but also not totally die.
Im just baffled at scene right after her death at how Welt starts gaslighting us with what we just witnessed, stating that this is odd from how Phantilia tends to do things and Ting may or may not be alive. For a while I was wondering if Welt was just trying to keep March from freaking out by confusing her, lol.

I wholeheartedly agree. I was partially spoiled so I made sure to interact with Tingyun before the reveal, and I honestly cannot remember any lasting impression of her besides playful and money. And I was so frustrated that their reaction afterwards was so deadpan. Cocolia's death was handled that way too. Like is it too much to implement a crying animation to feel the emotion? I'm ok that long life species don't miss a passing because they've had sufficient time, but it falls flat when a sacrifice/death doesn't leave a long term character impact in someone (supposedly Yukong here). This may be because of Asian Buddhist beliefs in reincarnation, they try not to mourn it too much

  • @Dahras1
    @Dahras1 6 месяцев назад +15

I'm with you man. The Tingyun story is especially bad, but honestly, the issues of not setting up the stakes/characters/world/history for things to actually matter has been poison for the entire plot Xianzhou plot.
Compare things in Xianzhou to things in Belebog. The main outline of Belebog is made clear immediately before you even land: Belebog used to be a warm paradise planet and it lost contact with the rest of the universe after being attacked by the Anti-Matter Legion. Now, there is a Stelleron on the planet and it is a frozen death-world run by a strict military government. You need to find the Stelleron and contain/destroy it for the sake of your journey and the planet's survival. From that point on, characters act within the structure of that set up, and further reveals build on the initial outline.
In the Xianzhou, you get word from Kafka that a Stelleron is on this massive ship-planet full of immortals and that you need to find it and/or her. You also know that Dan Heng has some history on the ship. But other than that, there's just no context and because the story is a) has less set up than Belebog and b) is even trying to do more *stuff* than Belebog, the whole thing makes little to no sense, the stakes are not clear, and everything feels rushed. I think some of these decisions were made to emphasize "plot reveals," but plot reveals are irrelevant if what is revealed doesn't make sense.
Playing "Clouds Leave No Trace" I was shocked that the information in that quest wasn't in the main storyline, as it makes the emotional stakes of basically everything the 4 former Xianzhou friends do 1000x more clear. I was shocked that they made Tingyun's death a "big reveal" without actually spending enough time focusing on Tingyun. I was shocked that they squirreled the explanation of the motives of the Disciples into a strange quest line so poorly paced they eventually made it optional.

You bringing up pretty much having to do homework to understand the plot highlights a bigger overarching issue in the Honkai franchise as a whole I feel. I hate that they like to put important content outside of the game. I shouldn't be required to dig for extra material to even have a basic understanding of the plot or to care about the characters. Some examples in Honkai impact that I think also highlights this issue is; A lot of Info on the 2nd eruption being relegated to a manga despite it kicking off the main plot, main character backstories being in mangas, and Elysian Realm story being in a tedious side mode meant to be done over a long period of time. The last one was the worst to me because I don't see how I'm supposed to care about the deaths of characters who died 50k years ago when it isn't actually them, and I don't know most of their back story because I'm not reading the walls of text in Elysian Realm.
tl;dr the issue is just bad story telling but often times it stems from them splitting important parts of the story into supplementary media

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the game tells us in the most backwards way that Tingyun is dead. The Guinifen Event quest tells us that Heliobi feed off emotions of the host until they grow bored with the host or sap them so dry that not even a corpse remains. Later on, we find out that the Heliobi are aware of Phantiliya, while not a smoking gun, this heavily implies she is a Heliobus. Additionally, in the Tingyun death scene a green orb representing Phantiliya comes from Tingyun's body, which look suspiciously like the ghost forms of Heliobi.

This is just all characters in Star Rail in a nutshell. Every single "character arc" so far, if you can even call it that, was rushed through like the writers were doing a speedrun. No one gets proper time to breathe and interact with each other. Sure, characters talk to one another and the game likes to pretend like they're now friends or enemies, but it still feels like everyone exists in a void. It's all disjointed and inconsequential, with everything feeling like an one and done thing that doesn't ever lead to anything. Tingyun is the same way, she got "killed" because the writers decided they finished her story speedrun so she wasn't needed anymore, aqnd it is now time for us to move onto something else. Every "villain" gets that treatment in the story, but I feel like it extends to other characters as well, even pssibly to entire locations. It makes the whole thing incredibly hard to relate to and care, I feel completely disconnected from the plot and couldn't care less about any of the characters when considering that they're probably going to get handwaved in the next patch and fade into the void, only to get called back for a random event or two.

I don't know why people actually think Tingyun is definitely dead. Her status as a playable character guarantees that she will be involved in future content. Even dead himeko in HI3 was still involved in a future event. This a gacha game, not an anime series or even a regular video game. Tingyun can potentially make them a lot more money if she's alive rather than if she's actually dead. I don't know why somehow the game won't do the same for tingyun after like 3-4 patches now. Yukong could've mourned tingyun's loss in 1.5 heliobus event.. but she only talked about caiyi. The game is actively not telling us tingyun is dead.
There's hints of a follow up to her story if an entity we have yet to meet in the story, the whistling flames guild, are literally retracing her steps. It's not over yet. If I’m remembering correctly we were separated from tingyun right after we got out of the loading bays. After we talked to yukong the trail team went and rested and she went to work then she acted suspiciously the rest of the time. It’s why I figured she wasn’t tingyun when we talked to one of the Sanctus medicus people. I didn’t know phantalia was a heliobus and if that’s true she could’ve entered the loufu on a different person then took over tingyun. Everyone is saying that she got taken over when she was away but I feel like she was taken over on the loufu. If this is somehow plausible it shows the story was rushed probably due to an over hyping of the game

I see a lot of people pointing to the scent mini game as the moment she was taken. Cause “her scent trail disappeared.”
The reason her Trail disappeared is because she went over a bridge that hung above the Ship bay. The game even says how “The drafts blew away her scent.”
Also, even in the moment you meet Tingyun she didn’t seem to bothered by the Mara-Struck guards closing in. Hell. She just casually called you over for aid as if it was a mild inconvenience.
It just doesn’t seem plausible that she was swiped up after the player gets there.

the thing is, we don't even know FOR SURE if tingyun is dead, in the same way that there are suspicious details about firefly as well. The only difference is tingyun is playable and firefly isn't, at least at the time during the scenes where they "died". Sure a funeral is a plot device used to provide closure to a dead character, but is it really a closure when yukong doesn't accept it and is still planning to set out to search for her? We also have the whistling flames guild searching for her, an entity we have yet to meet in the game. What about fu xuan telling us the tingyun we met since we arrived was already fake? Fu xuan also says she doesn't know if tingyun is dead or alive despite having her divination capability.
At the very least, these details raise suspicions that warrant a follow up story to discuss them. It only looked like a sure thing because mihoyo just casually moved away from the luofu storyline without bothering to address these questions they raised. I almost expect us to return to luofu after we finished the penacony arc early summer. One reason is there is an inaccessible area in luofu. I don't see how they're still keeping that locked for some reason unless if it's supposed to be the location of a new story quest or event

I actually thought the moment Tingyun's neck snaps and Phantyllia is introduced is effective. It was only after that, while considering the implications that I realised the plot was bullshit. Like you say... we never knew the real Tingyun. Even in-game dialogue casts doubt on her veracity. We do get it confirmed that she was real... but wow, such a missed opportunity. Pinpointing the moment lovely Tingyun became Phantyllia could have been such a fun game if this was done properly.
It makes me a bit sad, actually. Because I actually really like the Xianzhou lore and a lot of the characters. And I like Phantyllia conceptually (plus she had an amazing design and boss theme), but there was no emotional build up like on Jarilo.
Ever since Kafka and Silver Wolf mentioned Lord Ravagers on Herta Space Station, I've wanted to encounter one, and Phantyllia didn't disappoint, but they could have built up the reveal so much better, and fixing Tiangyun would have been a big part of that.

I think the twist worked fine in the moment, it just unravels when you look back at it and try to figure out what happened where. As far as there being no narrative reason for Tingyun to have been a real person, having her be an Amicassador from the Luofu essentially gives her access and apparent motivation that a newcomer wouldn't provide... like Luocha. So it's not accurate IMO to say there was no narrative reason for her to be a 'real' person. But she was not developed much beyond being two plot devices in a trench coat. At the same time, I think we can assume there was a real Tingyun at some point, because while Phantylia is probably more likely than other Destruction types to play the long game, getting herself installed as Tingyun in the first place would mean decades of hiding and pretending, if not centuries. Much easier to believe she possessed Tingyun either before the story started or during that weird Diting bit where she disappeared and we lost the scent temporarily.
As for Yukong... I dunno, in another dialog at a different point she says she doesn't believe Tingyun is actually dead and intends to keep searching for her, so maybe she didn't mention Tingyun during the 'goodbye' because that was already in the script.

This is a concept I refer to as "Made to be Mourned" where a character who is very friendly and helpful to the main character is killed off for cheap shock value, it's the easiest and in my opinion worst way you can up the stakes and make a villain easy to hate. Death as an aspect of story telling should be treated with respect, to kill a character is a major decision that should have huge ramifications for everyone that knew them. It should be a major plot point, it should not be glossed over, it should not be treated like a minor inconvenience. Himekos death in Honkai Impact 3rd is an amazing example of death done right, Himeko sacrificed herself willingly to save her student, using the one thing that could have saved her life to instead save someone elses. Tingyun was killed for nothing, because of nothing, it accomplished nothing, and it meant nothing. This is the patch where I stopped playing the game.

I still find this the ONLY 'bad' thing on the HSR plot so far, but let's just assume that hoyoverse is cooking something behind the scenes. Either she comes back as a real villain and trailblazer with luofu friends will help her gain redemption, or come back as the 'real' Tingyun herself.
But for HSR to be this non-spoken about the mystery of her current state (And with the heliobi event about phantylia...) I think it will take quite a WHILE for any real explanation since Penacony is right around the corner.
Personally I think it IS quite realistic that the express crew can't dwell on this as they too have an invitation on the penacony to go to. But if you talk to Yukong, she too says that she can't use all the funds of the guild just to search for her, and all of Tingyun's closest juniors and friends are currently searching for clues about her the day she arrived at the Luofu until the day she left everyone hanging. (The eerie part is that no one really saw it coming. Was she replaced? Was she just some thrown in char for the plot? I can't tell what and how they'll tell the narrative about this one, but I AM excited if ever we go back to Luofu again.)

100% agree. It feels like that scene is there uniquely for the shock value.
Imo the only way they could make it worse was if in the end the real Tingyun wasn't actually dead. Since at least for now they raised the stakes and have shown that they likely can kill off a playable character (which I thought they never would because of the players' backlash).
This part imo is not even the worse one of the Loufu storyline. Maybe it was because of the time between each update, but I found the entire "Dan Heng unforgivable sin" to be needlessly cryptic and with a weak payoff.

I think she is going to come back; while Welt's initial belief circumstances pointed to her not being present to die is just an initial hypothesis, the fact that the entire next interlude chapter of the story is essentially giving us more background on Phantylia, where she comes from, and how she likely feels about Nanook isn't a coincidence. Nor is that we're very early on shown that a heliobus doesn't have to be in somebody's body to interact with us in their form. My suspicion is that Phantylia does not actually like killing people and goes to considerable lengths to avoid resorting to doing it personally, and gets away with this via an outward expression of extreme malice that's common enough for a heliobus to pull off. She wanted the Ambrosial Arbor because she wanted to try making a body the Destruction couldn't kill: she failed. At a minimum, killing Tingyun before that would be a waste. And I think Welt's right that she'd get more enjoyment out of producing the same results as if she'd killed somebody without actually doing anything physical: heliobi seem to viscerally enjoy how much they can naturally mess with mortal perceptions.
Granted, the problem is we still don't have a clearly written final state for the story, so the same reasoning applies to Signora's death in Genshin Impact: she had no real reason to still be where she was, everything we've previously heard about her suggested her initial response to our arrival should be to just walk out, and things we've heard about her since that point suggest she had considerable foreknowledge, was in no way surprised at our arrival, and quite likely accepted that duel expecting to lose it. However, we've also since received some implications that while she was entirely willing to serve the Tsaritsa's goals she also saw that service as having distinct limits... and we've gotten the impression at least half the Harbingers have thought out some "bug out and make sure there's no pursuit" plans... and as usual in that storylines we never ask an archon the right questions when we get the chance to (consider how differently parts of Sumeru's storyline might have gone had we taken the chance to ask Morax why in a world where computerized banking was already practical to introduce he invented Mora and the disciplines of accounting and economics instead and he had explained their real purpose) and if the Raiden Shogun had in fact already agreed to provide unimpeachable evidence of Signora's death it wouldn't even occur to her to ever mention this to us without our asking... and we get a similar situation. Signora could have accepted her destined fate to die there, she could have faked her death, she could actually have worked out a way to come back - something which for other reasons would be a huge motivating factor - and deliberately died under circumstances mandating her resurrection or reincarnation. Since we don't have the full story clearly laid out ahead of time, it's hard to tell what was originally part of it.

Even in game they make funeral only because they believe it's very little chance to her survive because of Antimatter legion. It's like instead of killing, kidnapping characters in moment. Only problem I have here is too short time which we spend with her. But it's kinda understandable since while we come to ship, she already was possessed (will be bad to get know Tingyun better, just to realize after that wasn't her at all, which makes all progression lost in vein).

While I agree mostly with this (along with Luofu story content just...being boring, sped through, and I hope they learn better story pacing for Penacony), saying that it goes from Tingyun's death to a tonal whiplash of Belobog story arc is either a lie or glazes over the fact that there was a story patch where we help mourn for Tingyun for about 30 minutes.
I know 30 minutes isn't a long time in the grand scheme of things, but for a non-main character on the Express, it's a LOT of time. A lot of people shat on that patch because that's literally all the story was, but the Tingyun reveal/subsequent follow up could have been a LOT worse.
The Luofu story arc has major issues that go beyond Tingyun, and I think your opinion of her not being popular is probably because it wasn't as bad as you make it out to be.

    • @raiden8063
      @raiden8063 6 месяцев назад +2

The problem is that her death was purely for shock factor and didn't add to or change the story in any meaningful way. A 30 minute mourning scene is just all we get and then they move on from that like it doesn't matter.

@@raiden8063 Yep. It's the kind of story which ages poorly. The more you think about it, the worse it gets. However, hoyoverse really likes to toy with death itself as a product. I'd not surprised if we get a five star Tingyun in a robot zombie body. They can kill characters easily and revive them easily. It would be like a trump card to get attention/profit if they needs it.

Agreed. It was a very weird way to handle the character, and a playable one at that. If they're gonna kill off a playable character, I expect it to be handled WAY better than this... so I'm hoping she's just away on vacation and will come back and be like ". . . what do you mean you held a funeral?!"

I am so glad someone finally called out the Luofu for being so shit. I generally like the writing in Star Rail; Belobog was good, character quests are all great, the events are fun but THIS one? Nah. Too many plot twists without context, pointless characters, bad pacing, absolutely emotionally disconnected final boss... I really hate it, the only good part about it was when you interrogate Kafka and get to know why the Stellaron Hunters do what they do. Thankfully, I feel like since the Luofu story wrapped up - we've been getting much better story content so I have high Hope's for the future but hey... I guess at least it's not as bad as Liyue, amirite?

My brother in Christ Tingyun was an Acquaintance. You aren’t supposed to feel bad anymore than well someone just got their neck snapped in front of me…And because the trailblazers are nice people we help out with and attend the funeral. I really don’t understand why people care. Your little Fox waifu died. Cope harder. People die and her death doesn’t need to have any special meaning to the trailblazer. The meaning is to the characters that knew her. The universe doesn’t revolve around you.

    • @raiden8063
      @raiden8063 6 месяцев назад +3

Then why is the trailblazer the main character? By your logic, we don't need to meet any of the characters. We should just complete our mission and move on to the next planet. What people want is for her death to have at least meant something for the story.

I don't mind if she died. Why? Because for now she is not important character. If choice be mine, for Genshin Impact i killed 70% of characters, because they just useless for main story or even for world building. Such characters can be killed without blink of the eye, and create some suspence and drama. Only way they can be used.

you do that in a gacha game, you hit EoS before your first anniversary lol There's a reason most gacha games refrain killing playable characters. That's where the money comes from. Killing them will remove the attachment from the player, which is a pretty important factor why they would even spend money to roll for them in the first place

The only real dead playable character in HSR right now is xueyi but she was always like that as far as we knew.

@@Billy_Bat1993 i still think it's an important nuance between "already dead" vs "killed later". If I'm playing with already dead characters, it's like playing as a historical figure. I'm not sad Abe Lincoln died, even though his death was tragic since it's simply way before my time to have attachments.
Besides HI3 himeko, which playable character in HI3 was alive when released and then died later? Also, i kinda lied with saying "i haven't played HI3". I only played up to chapter 10 at this point. I only said I haven't played since I'm way behind enough that I'm still ignorant of the later chapters. HI3 himeko had a LOT of foreshadowing before chapter 9.. because I already knew she would die (from spoilers) so I was looking for clues instead. If you're talking about those two characters in penacony in the main quest, I'm not sold on their deaths at all. There's something suspicious about it, but we'll see.
To be clear, if an important NPC dies, I will be emotionally attached enough to feel sad but I can easily accept that since they're not playable. Playable characters are different imo especially in a gacha game.

The biggest question here is, why? Why we must be affevted by her death? There is no point of that, she died in the story for totally otherreasons than afrcting player, or his party (maybe excluding March, as she has big issues when it comes to topics of death), it affect other Lofu characters, and we was ther as 3rd party just looking at it from perspective of newcomers to this world...
