Have been here a few times on the way to and from Minehead. Mum and Gran used to tell of similar trips here in the early 1930s and they had to get out and push the car or reverse it up that steepest bend. Ive also driven on the toll road which gives an easier climb to the top.
Didn't know about the Porlock hill climb. Almost made it to the top and got stolled. Had to use the toll road later. This video brings back the memory.
Mr D, brilliant driving as ever. Off to Porlock on Friday (my childhood 2nd home) thought I would do a quick search, and your video appeared ;-) Hope you and the family are keeping well x

Drove there a few times last week whilst staying in Lynmouth but visiting other places , you were lucky having such a clear run even through the village. Surprised that the buildings are not struck or damaged more often with the huge lorries trying to get through I have some great photos of the double decker bus Exmoor coastal express passing through . Also in the past have been up and down Porlock hill on my motor bike
Hi... you need a polarizing filter which will minimise reflections. Available from Nextbase for £9.99 nextbaseparts.com/products/nextbase-polarising-filter?variant=32088324800627 regards Paul
@@PaulDonovan Thanks for this information. I do have a filter purchased off eBay four years back. Perhaps its not up to standard. At the time of purchase I think Nextbase did not sell them. Certainly not at Halfords. Would you tell me your model number and the settings if known for this video. Looking at my footage, 1080 the pictures not sharp like yours, which may be caused by my throbbing 1960s motor car.
Have you driven up hardknott pass? That road is a challenge, it’s 33%, hairpin bends, only wide enough for 1 car with the occasional passing place. Views are worth it at the top though
@@PaulDonovan no worries, it is a tough road but definitely worth it at the top. Start off on wrynrose pass then hardknott. At the end is a lovely town called seascale, with a sea front car park and beach etc
I always leave a 20 second extra bit of video at the end to accommodate the links... ie after the main content of the video has been displayed. In this case the last 20 seconds were really uninteresting ... just a bit of wooded mainroad. I don't think you missed anything. Anyhow thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. Regards Paul
@@PaulDonovan Hi Paul Thanks for your reply. Am I right in thinking the links which appear at the end of videos are put there by other people trying to attract attention to their own site/s? Or can they only be put there by the person who puts up the original site? The reason I mention this is because such links often appear ridiculously early thus obscuring what you want to see and I have always assumed they were put there by people with no consideration for others which is annoying. Incidentally, your video was a stroll down memory lane and brought back many happy memories. We went up and down that hill on holiday in my dad's very old and beaten up Morris Minor similar to this one. www.morrisminorforum.com/registry/pictures/79735/1949_Morris_Minor_MM_Saloon_2_door_Black_Ian_H_Thomson_000.jpg I was only a nipper at the time and had serious doubts if we would make it to the top because the old girl had what I thought was the mechanical equivalent of severe asthma. Going back down was a leap into the unknown too! Anyway, we made it in both directions :-) Thanks for sharing. Alan
I may seem a bit harsh, sorry for that but it’s a living village where front doors open into the road and children live. Traffic need only go at a car park speed through the village and high street which is the safest way to protect children.
I live in a city. When people come here from the country nobody gives a damn. They park anywhere they like and drive how they like. You have no special right, it’s an A road. We have to keep our kids inside in the city, so don’t expect the world to revolve around you.
28mph in the 20mph zone, only slowed when road narrowed. I agree with Carol. Your satnav says speed and even without that I could see you were too fast. You passsed a 20mph sign at 28 and kept going..Thats my evaluation of the video..if the road had not narrowed you would have kept going at that speed..Carol is rite, nothing to do with not being friendly at all.
So... the very first bit of 20mph limit was on a narrow lane ... with no pedestrians and no buildings .. and my ability to stop should a car have come the other way was fine..... I at all times drove at a speed commensurate with the road conditions. Once entering the actual built up area my speed moderated to take into account all the hazards and possible risks... especially People / Children. My speed was, apart from a brief moment, well below 20mph and as safe as practicably possible. I submit that the 20mph sign should have been placed the other side of the narrow entrance lane... immediately before the actual village. I always drive at a speed that is relevant to the conditions and always with due regard to pedestrians and other road users. Please re-watch the video... particularly my progress through the town and report back to me.... once you have gotten off your... high horse !! Regards Paul
Your going too fast around the village. Children do not have path space and from your video you would have been unable to stop in time so please don’t come back.
Carol.... take another look at my video. My actual speed is displayed at the bottom. Through the village it was between 10 and 15mph most of the time. it did briefly touch 21 .. but only for a second. I am always on the lookout for pedestrians especially children. I could have stopped pretty quickly at any point. I think the video gives an impression of more speed which may have confused you. Please take another look and get back to me once you have had chance to really evaluate the video. Nice to see a friendly welcome from you guys 😎 regards Paul
@@PaulDonovan very patronising Paul. Carol is so rite, you need to watch your own video, to say that you were between 10 and 15mph lmao. Anyway throughout that whole 20 mph limit you were speeding, you can't deny that and to say that you could have stopped quickly is quite frankly a lie because if your wife looked out of her side window on a left hand bend you would see nothing until too late as you are driving a LHD vehicle. May I suggest that you apologise to Carol.
Years ago went up there on a 125cc bike. Bumped into a Harley rider who’d dropped his bike on that bend and it slid down the hill on its side 😬🫣 pub at the top was nice with a great photo of a coach that had got jammed on that top bend too with a note about a bet with the landlord about if it would make it 😂
Making that run like twice a week delivering to spar shop you passed and Lynton shops. Nice calm driving.
Thanks 👍

I thought the Hardknott Pass was the steepest in the UK.
it is... Porlock is the steepest "A" Road !! Cheers Paul
It's the main road from Minehead to Barnstaple. I once drove up the steep hill in a Renault 4. A bypass for Porlock would be impossible.

Whynatts pass in the Peak District looks way steeper
it's the steepest "A" Road !!
Ooh, I wouldn't fancy going up in my lorry, pulling 40+ tonnes of weight. The people that would be stuck behind wouldn't fancy it either 😆
