Discovering Calabria: Driving into Scalea

- One of our favorite drives in Calabria is along the SS18 along the northern Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria. Here we're driving from a hill above Praia a Mare down to Scalea along the SS18 and enjoying spectacular views of the sea along the way.

Italy. I remember the moment that I realized that Italy was the coolest country in the world....ok, well at least the coolest country that I had been to. It was in '97 and my sweetheart Claudia from Grosseto and me were driving from Roma to Bologna and we stopped the night in Siena. Piazza del Campo was was bustling with activity (any normal evening it is bustling). The Piazza was exciting, the food, vino and music and art was everywhere. It was fantastic. We met as Pen Pals in '90. We still get together to this day. It's been 13 months since I've seen her due to Covid :(

We lived in Naples for 3 years. It took me a year before I could get myself to drive there haha. We are looking into buying a vacation home in Italy. So thankful for all your information and help.

Fantastic! It is such a gorgeous area. We did a video on driving in Southern Italy. There are some unspoken rules but once you know them it is easy! A little warning: If you cannot drive a stick rent your car at one of the airports and verify that they can rent you an automatic. It might be tricky finding an automatic transmission down south. Just our experience.

It’s beautiful just as roads driving to Half Moon Bay. But, some roads are so narrow, I’m surprised one car actually fit in there! Forget about 2 cars going opposite directions... what happens in the rush hour traffic(if that exist in that area)!
Hi Kaiser! Actually there are some customs about driving that make it nice and pretty stress free except in August when everything goes out the window with all the tourists. I will go over it when you get here. It makes so much sense!

We were in Praia a Mare initially. Beautiful drive. If you were to drive from Rome you would end up on this highway.
Doesn't seem like there are any rancher type homes
You know, I have don’t think I have ever seen a ranch style house in all of Italy! Lol!
