Austrian here. They will target adults that look scared, or children that seem naughty/cheeky. Some older children try to chase after them without getting noticed and pull on their fur. And the Krampus go after them. They will never go scare or whip a small child.
I just love the energy during a krampus run. I missed it two years in a row now and I am a bit sad about it.
I was there as well! It’s scary fun!
Also Austrian here!
All Krampus who take part in these runs belong to a club and have to follow rules. One of these rules is is that spectators must not be injured - especially children!!!! If a Krampus whips you, it may pinch but not be extremely painful and all Krampus know the limits of what is allowed and what not. Even kids are already part of this runs and clubs!!
Unfortunately, as it is sometimes the case, it does occationally happen that a Krampus goes too far. If this happens more then once, the Krampus (person) is expelled and this is actually very rare for a Krampus who belongs to such a club.
But there are also idiots (like in Vienna) who don't belong to a club or "live" this tradition, dress up like Krampus and hide behind those masks to attack people ramdomly at subway stations at the outskirts of Vienna, just because...! But then they also use chains and cause real injuries. Usually these idiots are gone before police arrive, unfortunately, and they have absolutly nothing to do with this great tradition!!! Those cases are rare!!
So, to make a long story short: I LOVE KRAMPUS RUNS! They are awesome!!!!! 😂❤😂❤😂
