I was an aircraft director in the Navy.. That low deep hum on engine startup was boner enhancing.. You could feel that shit in your chest and it felt amazing.. Couple that with the smell of jet exhaust and I'm having flashbacks.. Thanks for the video and the memories..
A few questions I have by the time I got to 5:45: 1) I noticed your flaps switch was set to "HALF" but in the cold&dark quick mission the switch is set to "FULL"...what should it be set to? I think at 1:10 your was also set to "FULL" but at some point it was changed but you never said when you did it. 2) Your FCS page had all the boxes cleared but mine has a bunch of "X"'s....should they be cleared before taxi? 3) I still have a master caution lit....but you dont at this point...
"No nonsense tutorial" - swaps FCS from left to right DDI to get up the checklist on the left one - I know this is the "right" way to do it as per NATOPS, but what's the point in it? To me, this actually is the most nonsense (or rather, the only) part of the whole startup procedure. Why not just put the list on the right DDI instead? Less work, practically same result. Nice shortcut startup guide though, thanks for making it, will probably help lots of people :) The true fun in using the AB on takeoff is that this is the only moment of your whole flight where you can actually hear that it's running... :D - at least that's what I can tell from watching all the videos, and I've seen [GR]Cap constantly not knowing he's in AB and Sherman telling him to cut it :D
You are the 2nd person to note that, and you guys are probably right, I was reading the NATOPS and it wasnt clear to me 2.10.4 Launch Bar System. The launch bar is hydraulically extended and retracted by redundant springs. A locking tab mechanically locks the launch bar in the up position. A two position (EXTEND and RETRACT) launch bar switch on the lower left corner of the main instrument panel controls launch bar operation. As the launch bar extends the green L BAR advisory light comes on. When the launch bar is fully extended it is held against the deck by deck load control springs. The control springs allow vertical movement of the launch bar during taxi. As the aircraft is taxied into the launch gear the launch bar drops over the shuttle and is held captive in the extended position as the shuttle is tensioned. On aircraft 161353 THRU 161715, when both throttles are advanced to or above MIL, a throttle switch is made, the green L BAR advisory light goes out and the launch bar switch returns to Figure 2-18. Emergency/Parking Brake Handle A1-F18AC-NFM-000 I-2-68 ORIGINAL RETRACT I have not checked personally if this applies or not, so just left it down. Also, perhaps the bad things that should occur arent implemented yet.
8:15 Your current gross weight is literally there on the checklist screen on your DDI, wtf do you need the rearming screen for? You also have your stab trim there, so you only need the checklist page to set up your trim.
I wish I could use the switches, it wont let me. Or if it does, my mouse cursor is nowhere near the switch -.- just clicked the windscreen and boom I have a battery power ON
When i first recorded this, i thought the same thing, then I saw the tool tip button numbers and 1 was from the bottom left, not the top right like in the A-10. I too was very confused.
That you wouldn't release any more F/A-18C content until the module released. I realize that wasn't necessarily a promise and I still love that you made this before it's release.
DCS sneaks up on you like that. Happened to me during the fall in college so I had to leave my pc at home in the spring to get some actual work done...
You have forget the fire test a and b after battery on.... after the first engine start the bleed air... and the fcs auto check by Aircraft after the second engine start.
Jabbers his is not broken but just early accès.... at the final release, when this Aircraft was finish, the start up steps come little to long than yesterday
The F18 is clearly a LOT more manoeuvrable than the SU25 T that most of us start this sim with. I am still mastering taking off and landing without destroying my tyres or just not crashing outright. But this looks like it will be more exciting once I have more experience :)
The actual trick is to be gentle with the aircraft. This jet can be a bit sluggish to take off and to land. For example, when you are at Vr, you need to excercise patience, and rotate only up to 8-10 degrees and then hold, regardless if it is taking off. Similarly, at landing, you need to be mindful of your weight and your speed. But the jet will reward you with an exceptionally forgiving AoA capability.
I do, spent a lot of my time in the hornet in VR thus far, I just like the making youtube and streaming content outside of VR for the quality. Typical if Im not recording or streaming, im in VR.
No, its not. Trust me. Thruster in Hornet is connected to paddle inside engine, and its like in car; press and fuel is flowing faster. The problem with F/a18 is there are lag between throtle up and open the paddle inside. I hope they fix it.
Ya this wasnt a tutorial on how to do things accurately it was how to do them quick dirty and easy..... No nonsense shit you'd do in the real aircraft.
Y'know this is so disappointing. Here I was ready to sing your praises for the quality of this video and then you have to go do something stupid and drift your damn plane on the runway...and NOT have eurobeat playing in the background. That's just amateur hour sir! You should be better than that.
While I respect your desire to focus on the game part and not the realism, you should choose your titles more carefully. Checklists do have a very important purpose and *are* sensible, what you propose to "save time" *are* by definition nonsense tutorials.
I have a relative who was an actual F18 pilot and he said this is as close as someone will ever get to flying the F18.
Can you make a tutorial on how to do a Tokyo drift on the Hornet? Thank you for the tutorial, Sir.

dfurtman best feeling in the world, still gives me chills every time I hear it
I served in the Air Force and after separating I realized I really missed hearing the sounds of the flightline at night!
This is still relevant two years later. Thank you for your time!
Thanks Jabbers. Not long now. Tried my best but still got a woody when those engines spooled up.
Its hard (giggity)
Good stuff, you can also see your weight in the checklist page!
Oh nice I didn’t even notice!!
Closing the canopy didn't work... still got a stiffy
imagine how hard it would have been if it were open 0.o
thanks for the video, been learning cold start and this is easy to follow
Thanks jabbers. Since I don’t play for simulation, this is exactly what I needed
Exactly what I needed, thank you Jabbers!
"if you're on a BOAT"
please do more hornet tuts, you're one of the only people who keeps me engaged lmao
Nice "Bare Bones" Information!
So the Bleed air knob only need attention if we run the fire test channels. I guess :) - Thank you for 2x engine hard ons ;)
Ya, if you do the fire test, you have to spin the bleed air knob 360 back to norm
Is it me, or is the F18 stupid easy to startup? I've been flying the A10C for quite a while.

Half takeoff full landing
You didn’t press FCS reset
Yes clear master caution
Great video! Thank you! Question: Can you explain a bit more how we employ the nose-up trim data from the chart? Where do I set that?
Press the nose up trim button and watch the stab trim on the FCS page.
ahhh, the FCS page. that's where the disconnect was. i feel like a dumbass now. i promise i know how to trim an airplane. thanks sir.
You can also see the current stab trim on the checklist page
Fantastic clip

Good job Jabbers! Hope to fly with you soon -Toast
Hearing Betty get mad and yell "PULL UP, PULL UP!" or "TURN RIGHT!" will never get old.
Notice I passive aggressively turned left?
TBH, I didn't. But that makes it even more fun. I wonder is she has an "I told you so" too if you turn the other way and get killed.
She does with you in those cases, so you always win
TOLD YOU SO! TOLD YOU SO!
Gotta love the drift on the runway LOL

Personal preference, checklist on left (replaced with hud for takeoff) because this is where things are when I’m landing on the boat.
Nice one, but you want to set the launch bar switch back to Up once it's trapped under the shuttle.
You are the 2nd person to note that, and you guys are probably right, I was reading the NATOPS and it wasnt clear to me

Yup realized that after making the video.
you've got me all moist now!!! cannot wait for this tomorrow
Patiently waiting for more of these on the FA18
I came here for no nonsense and got some hilarious nonsense. +1 sub
I typically just assume everyone would understand the title was tongue in cheek :) I incorrectly assume, glad you still liked it though!
Informative and hilarious. Thumbs up from me.
So I did everything in this video and ny ac still won’t leave the deck, any suggestions?
I wish I could use the switches, it wont let me. Or if it does, my mouse cursor is nowhere near the switch -.- just clicked the windscreen and boom I have a battery power ON
Odd never seen that
Pls help. For some reason I can’t move the throttle quadrant in cold and dark and I feel like I just spent $80 on nothing
You need to press the bindings for idle/off detent toggle on the throttle, try like right alt home and right ctrl home
I thought the OSB numbers went 1-5 across the top and then clockwise from there? Are you starting from the bottom left moving clockwise?
When i first recorded this, i thought the same thing, then I saw the tool tip button numbers and 1 was from the bottom left, not the top right like in the A-10. I too was very confused.
Don’t make promises you can’t keep
Jabbers! Anyways amazing video i’m sure i’ll be referencing it for a while...
what promises?
That you wouldn't release any more F/A-18C content until the module released. I realize that wasn't necessarily a promise and I still love that you made this before it's release.
Ya I didn’t think I would have the time....at the time
DCS sneaks up on you like that. Happened to me during the fall in college so I had to leave my pc at home in the spring to get some actual work done...
CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE EXPLAIN HOW YOU PUT THE ENGINE INTO IDLE WITHOUT THE KEYBOARD? I WANT TO BE REALISTIC BUT I CANT FIGURE IT OUT
Idle detent binding
You have forget the fire test a and b after battery on.... after the first engine start the bleed air... and the fcs auto check by Aircraft after the second engine start.
All 100% unnesary as of the launch. Bleed air only required if you do the fire test, so dont do the fire test and you can skip both steps.
Checklist Tests in DCS for me are nonsense, the aircraft isnt gonna be broken, i dont have time to waste on that.
Jabbers his is not broken but just early accès.... at the final release, when this Aircraft was finish, the start up steps come little to long than yesterday
My point still stands, its an unnecessary step to do fire tests, which is why i skipped it

Thanks man, much appreciated
Good stuff man!
is the close up zoom part of the Track Ir, or built into the game itself?
built into the game, you can bind zoom to an axis. In VR you bind it to a button
Stupid question: how do you know which button is "OSB15", etc?
Start at the bottom left as OSB1 and count clock-wise
What’s that target thing in the upper right corner of the HUD?
Iron gun sight? Incase your hud fails i guess
how do you set the trim to 19?
when i press the trim button it only says 12
Press the trim button and then nose up trim hat till it’s at 19
How do you know when you are at 7 degrees? (sorry, but I am completely new to this.. ;)) Love your videos btw, keep them coming!
7 degrees? Are you talking about takeoff trim?
I am talking about the takeoff itself (you said we should rotate to 7 degrees once we reach the appropriate speed)
7 degrees on the hud, The W on the center of the hud is where your nose is pointing, put it at 7 degrees up.
how do you turn on the voice in the plane that warns you?
Mines on by default.
Ahhhh.....No Elephant this time??? lol :) Thx,great vid.
Thanks for this video. I keep forgetting to turn on that EW.
Great stuff. Many thx
weird the afterburner has no animation with the fire
Something is wrong with your installation or graphics settings.
Throttle indent I can’t get to work
Bind the one that says OFF/IDLE
@@Jabbers Thanks great Tutorials
What program do you use to record your flight?
Obs
Thank you
Thank you my lord and savior. Will sacrifice goats tonight in your glorious name.
God I can't wait!
Great, consise tutorial!
You should create Tutorials for living Jabs :) Nice/fun job ;)
My apu switch keeps on shutting off
It's suppose to
Jabbers no but i cant turn it on i flip the switch and i do it instantly goes back off it glitch or something you have any ideas
Nope very odd
Jabbers i click it it goes on and off at the same time idk why
Very odd man I have no idea, is the jet already started? Or is this on a cold start?
you dont need the bleed air knob?
I tried with and without, seems to work fine either way
ok good
the bleed air get closed when you perform the fire test. if you skip the fire test you dont need to cycle the bleed air.
Great info, was not aware, thank you!
Great vid, thanks!
Side question...you still playing in VR?
I do, spent a lot of my time in the hornet in VR thus far, I just like the making youtube and streaming content outside of VR for the quality. Typical if Im not recording or streaming, im in VR.
Jabbers Ah ok. Anxious to try the Hornet tomorrow in VR myself.
Thank you!
Plenty hard-ons in this tutorial.
How about about a turnoff /shutdown tutorial?
Who does that? Haha seriously though I rarely ever do b that so dunno the proper sequence
@@Jabbers 😊agree, but its also intresting to know just howto do it.
My MFCD's aren't coming on
Do you have export enabled to a monitor?
Nada, tried both a cv startup and ground startup and I can't figure it out
Posted it on hoggit also
I'm an idiot and forgot to bind my off/idle to my throttle.
Thanks for the tutorial!
How much does this plane cost btw?
79.99 I believe, check www.digitalcombatsimulator.com
@@Jabbers Oof
why do you set bingo fuel at 8000?? You are not bingo when you have 80% fuel.
8000 is just a standard, usually can be considered Joker, then once hit you set your real bingo
how to use HMD?
HMD isnt available in EA
Jabbers you fly with TM Warthog? If yes, can you pass me your config?
I do but I haven’t fully set my bindings up for the hornet, it’s a slow process for me, find what I use most and bind as necessary
Yea it is... I have problem with thrust, i bind it and saw that they have lag when i throtle up. Thats so iritating.
That’s how the real jet is

Interesting, cause have been talking to a couple hornet drivers, and they havent mentioned that it feels wrong, will ask directly though.
Great
I know that you're a fellow VR user, so how does it look in VR, Jabbers?
To scale, few things hard to read but pretty ignorable once you learn what they are.
Jabbers Thanks 👍 I was worried about reading the two screens.
Thanks man
Thx man!
Sorry Jabbers, but you don't taxi to the apron on the boat, you taxi to the CAT.
Ya this wasnt a tutorial on how to do things accurately it was how to do them quick dirty and easy..... No nonsense shit you'd do in the real aircraft.

Nice i watched theDevilDog and he did similar thing and i though holly crap how can you know all this :D
Read the NATOPS manuals :) and an incredible thirst to know how these things work
You only need to go to 20% according to wags. Save some time. :p
Oh that’s 10% less time to have to wait for that raging hard-on sound
Jabbers haha
Is this alpha?
Should be released into beta in a matter of hours
bingo at 8000? is that a joke? lol
Joker 8000, bingo is less
