On October 1, 1950, a large crowd filled Tiananmen Square in Beijing. They were celebrating the first anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. However, the nascent state received letters from the leaders of two of its neighbors on the day - leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea Kim Il Sung and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, asking for military assistance. How did this come about? CGTN's documentary "Enemy on the Doorstep: China's Involvement in the Korean War" shows you what was behind the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea, which defined history. #KoreanWar1950 #China #Korea

@@bluskies1000 I'm sure the world would be having endless fear or misery if people like you do not bother to read history exist. Remember that Japan used Korea as a springboard to invade China and commit various war crimes. America is literally doing the same thing. US forces on the border was, and never is, a good thing. America could station nukes in Korea and destroy China into oblivion. Even now, there are US troops in South Korea, imagine if the North was taken, then China would be next to an enemy that it could not contend with at the time. If I recall correctly, the last time there were missiles stationed in an island near America, you nearly started a goddamn nuclear war. Additionally, some Chinese villages near the Yalu river were bombed, and with the enemy right at the doorsteps, any country that is not a lackey of America would do the same thing to protect its sovereignty

At the end of the film, a short caption caught my eyes: Mao's son was killed in the war. Mao was the leader of China, he had the power to keep his son at home, but he sent his own son to fight and die for the war he had sent others' sons. Unlike Chicken Hawk Dick Cheney, he orchestrated 9/11 (which was an Inside Job) and sent poor American boys who had volunteered to join the military to earn free college tuitions, and many of those patriotic American boys died or suffered mental illnesses because they were afflicted with moral injuries for killing innocent Muslims.

Chicken Hawk Dick Cheney orchestrated 9/11 (which was an inside job)??? Melody Poor, this American says you can kiss my doogie for making an irresponsible allegation like that. Why.....do you have inside information? Were you even around at that time? How would you have liked it if someone attacked the Summer Palace, the Great Wall, and Tiana men Square and killed 3,000 innocent Chinese civilians?? Would you not be in an uproar and seek to track down the terrorists that conspired that unprovoked attack on your people?? Well, that's exactly how the reaction of Americans felt immediately following that famous 9-11 attack.
Seek to find out who the culprits were and set the military in motion to seek out their capture or termination became the objective . Americans were drafted?? Hah, I laugh at your naivete. We Americans were so emotionally upset that many of our young men quit their jobs, stopped their education, left their families to enroll in the military......so that the culprits could be found and then brought to justice or appropriately terminated. And that is exactly what happened when the Al Qaeda training camp was located in Afghanistan. We asked the Afghanistan Taliban government if they would grant the US permission to enter their air space to attack Al Qaeda, but, no, the conservative Taliban government supported the Muslim Fundamentalist Al Qaeda militia and denied permission to the US. But, the US went in to attack them anyway and destroyed their training camp with the assistance of the Northern Alliance militia who opposed both the Al Qaeda and the Taliban. Unfortunately, the Al Qaeda leader, Osama Ben Laden, went into hiding and it took the US a good 10 years or more to finally find him in a home in Pakistan where he was finally killed.

Even as I am glad that the people of South Korea got to enjoy a better life than they would have had under the Kim family, I can and do still respect the common Chinese soldier fighting so bravely in the face of US air and artillery superiority. Not to mention determined American soldiers.
The victory at Lake Changjin was in fact a huge win. Naysayers in the West have built a whole narrative that really it was a loss, etc., due to the high number of Chinese casualties. Yet this is a given for any battle between infantry with small arms and an enemy with infantry, tanks, fighters, bombers, land and offshore artillery. The wonder is that those young Chinese soldiers carried the day against such odds.

Interesting facts about the Korean War:
China wasn't even part of the war before the US didn't threaten its own borders. South Korean government was mass killing Korean civilians who don't share their political view, executing thousands of political prisoners and killing many unarmed villagers during the war. The US empire was napalm bombing civilians without even knowing, or caring, who they are murdering. Also, MacArthur wanted to drop nuclear bombs on China. Fortunately, Truman was able to put a leash on his mad dog on time and the tragedy was averted.

with the intention of occupying Taiwan and assisting French army invading South Vietnam, it's almost obvious that US could set these all up(south Korean killing Korean ppl) as an excuse for them to advance US troops into Korean war, later, to serve the ultimate mission of invading China from 3 different directions whenever they are all ready. What possibly could the US not do? they are capable of coming up with any evil plans.

Yes, they were brave men. No doubt and patriotic? Maybe not. You see, Chairman Mao ordered them to go as volunteers. Many of them were captured Nationalist soldiers anyway. They were expendable and, if ordered, who was to refuse? There was no such option as "no, I don't want to kill anymore." No, I need to stay at home to take care of my aged parents and provide food for the family." No, my education should come first and I want to study hard so that I can serve my country adminstratively." You think any of those excuses for not going to war were acceptable? Nope, if ordered to go.....you go !! Besides, China in 1950 had difficulties feeding so many millions of Chinese. If we sacrifice a 30=40 thousand, that's less mouths to feed....besides they were Chiang Kai Shek's troops anyway." And that is why they were sent w/o winter clothing, lack of sufficient ammunition, artillery, tanks, air power.....they had none of that and yet they would be forced to attack in waves of seemingly suicide attacks. Yes, many young Chinese boys died needlessly in a foreign conflict. Ironically, following the cessation of the conflict, there was an exchange of prisoners of war. Approximately, 15 Americans chose to stay and live with the Chinese. On the other hand, approximately 20,000 PLA "volunteers accepted an offer to go live in Taiwan rather than return to their homeland knowing that there might be a possibility of being punished for winning a victory or returning to a life of starvation and a life of political dictatorship.

In a weak country, people are not considered people, so even suffering is cheap.

They really really didn't want to fight because they were so poor after many years of world war II and civil war, and they were just trying to focus rebuilding their economy, but they had no choice because they felt being threatened. This war could be avoided, and hundreds of thousands of Korean, Chinese and American lives could have been saved, but the politicians and Macarthur's arrogance made this possible.

Why do we allow ourselves to be talked into, pressured into, and finally decide to go into conflicts in different parts of the world where our very strong and technologically advanced weapons cause severe destruction, terminate many of the opposing military, and even capture drug cartel bosses from foreign states. Well, using 9-11 as an example, there are those who view the US as a demonic power and thus conspire to destroy all that we represent. There are those who follow a completely different viewpoint to economics and view our capitalistic system as selfishly profit oriented and exploitative, and there are those who view our society with all of its wealth and comforts as a form of evil materialism and in need of being cleansed. Thus, we seek to defend our interests, our aspirations, our institutions and constitution, our independence, our love for freedom, and to protect from others, the American Way.......that is why.

As an American, I believe the way this war is taught here is pure propaganda. It's the usual "defense against communist aggression" and "promoting freedom and democracy" talk, but they usually leave out the fact that we killed 1/5 of the North Korean people and bombed every single village and city to ruins. We definitely don't learn that the South was also ruled by a dictatorship, or that the South lagged behind the North economically until the 1970s. I'm glad to hear the Chinese perspective on this war for once. I hope there can someday be a peaceful reunification and a neutral and prosperous Korea.
As for the US and China, I'm afraid our leadership and Deep State are pushing us towards another war. The talk of Xinjiang genocide seems suspiciously similar to Iraq's nonexistent WMDs, the Nayirah baby incubator testimony, or the Gulf of Tonkin.

Good that CTGN produced these documentary to shows the actual facts leading to the Korea war in 1950. If only the PLA are as well equip as they are now, maybe the thousand of lives of these volunteers could be saved. The overwhelming military might of the US forces shows how venerable the PLA volunteer force are fighting against a far superior, well equipped and powerful US force at that time. China building of her military forces is a far sighted vision of the PRC to safe guard itself against Western and ill-intent forces of creating problems in Asia. With the present LDP in Japan intention on amending Japan’s post-war constitution, it is potentially dangerous for the region. It would expand Japan role of military offensive behaviour in the future.

True Democracy hardly ever existed anyway, if any. Hence, an alternative system that is just and be able to prevent foreign interference can be very interesting.

very true ... however, there was an American reporter who initially covered the civil war in China first hand, wrote articles and a book about it, and then followed up with another book which also discussed China's involvement in the Korean War. That reporter was Edgar Snow (1905 - 1972): his first book was "Red Star Over China" (initially published in 1938, revised in 1944, and again in 1968); and his second book was "Red China Today" (published in 1961).
He conducted first hand interviews with many of the relevant historical figures of those decades, and Snow's reporting closely paralleled the history told in this video documentary.
(Snow also wrote some other books regarding the far east, but those were the only two I came across in the 60s).
