While not the first rock and roll record, this one song greatly popularized the genre! Interestingly, at the time, pretty much only jazz guitarists had those kind of lead chops. For those whom might care, Danny Cedrone was the guitarist who put down this song's famous guitar solo. He was a session guitarist (who also had his own band) that Haley used on the original's (Haley version) 1954 recording. And if you listen to Haley's 1953 version of "Rock the Joint," you'll basically hear Cedrone play pretty much the same solo, just a bit smoother. Crazy, but Cedrone made a mere $21 for the recording session - a pittance for such a wonderful, iconic, early rock guitar solo. But far more cruel, just three days away from turning 34, and only 10 days after this solo's/song's recording, Cedrone was killed, breaking his neck in a fall down some stairs (perhaps, a heart attack?). Thank God for recorded sound, else, next to no one would remember Cedrone.
I come from Bill Haley territory. My guitar teacher as an adult was the late John Kay. He replaced Franny Beecher at the age of 20 and later played with Franny when they were in the Comets together. John said Haley tol him they had three hours to record their single. They spent 2 and 1/2 hours recording "13 Women". Producer Milt Gabler told them they had 1/2 hour to record a B-side and left the studio. Haley had no lead guitarist in the Comets, but would call in Danny Cedrone from The Esquire Boys. Cedrone had played the solo on "Rock the Joint" so Haley told him to use the same solo for the B-sdie, Rock Around the Clock. Two takes later they were done. Spliced the takes together. Ironically Haley resented Gabler making them work so long on "13 Women" that Haley never played the tune ever again. The record came out and flopped. It would take the movie "Blackboard Jungle" to turn RATC a hit. Cedrone would never realize his solo would become so famoust as he was murdered by a mobster a few weeks later.
this is first Ive heard of "murdered by a mobster,"....it wasnt an accident or heart attack like is always stated in all sources Ive found? Do you know details?
@@joejones9520 Have you read Bill Jr.'s book? It is in there. Among Haley fans it is widely known. Haley and the band had warned him to stir clear of the mobsters, but he continued to collect the nickels from the mob owner jukeboxes. Evidently they thought he was skimming off the top.
it's amazing that what's basically the first rock n roll shredding guitar solo was done by a guy who fell downstairs and died before he could even play the damn thing live
I'm astonished how many video "lessons" there are for this solo-which get it completely wrong. Thankfully, you NAILED IT! Accurate, thorough, precise work, sir. Much appreciated!
I always thought he just trill picked while sliding down from the 21st fret on the d string. I thought that’s kind of how surf guitar techniques evolved from the 40s and 50s. Maybe that was just too easy though……the chromatic rundown is tough on my arthritis…..
When I perform this live for the first time I will use distortion. I'm sure nobody will mind and it'll give me a little extra confidence. This lesson is the best I've found. Thank you.
Add distortion and nobody will recognize it as the plain flavored jazz riff it was. no hardcore rock lover would ever consider Haley as "true formula" rock
Sad story about it's creator, Danny Cedrone, who had an accident and broke his neck few months before "Rock around the clock" were included in the soundtrack of "Blackboard jungle" and became a massive hit for The Comets. He couldn't enjoy the success but this lick will be for ever in the Olimpo of the pickers. He was already replaced by Franny Beecher, another virtuoso that matches Danny's lick note by note...
Nice now to learn this but it's hard when I have the attention span of a flea! but am going to work hard on this. I saw them arrive at Sydney airport on TV.
It’s easy for us to forget of course that a lot of the early R&R players learned from jazz, country and country swing players and were very skilled - like Scotty Moore for example.

Hay Will - If you're going to get this channel off the ground you're going to have to change up that super annoying intro - just saying, mate - it sucks - big time! You're good - but really, what were you thinking ?
Isn't this the coolest, but most underrated guitar solo ever, the best tutorial on YT.
Totally on point..
Honestly, add more overdrive to it and it’s pure shredding. (Not that it already isn’t shredding)

Thanks, its always easier to see the entire solo first, so the student can have a frame of reference as it is broken down into pieces.
He does play it in the beginning

How ahead of its time was this solo!? This is 1956!
Around Around The Clock was released in 20 May 1954. It was then released a second time in May 1955.
Pioneering shredding in the 50"s. Cool.
Check out Django Reinhardt

A tip: play it out of the front pickup
how about that open B on the intro?
April 12, 1954: Danny Cedrone played it.
Indeed he did, I go into some of the history of the track in the downloadable PDF in the video description! Happy playing!
