      @@melkiorwiseman5234 But isn't that fine that he attacked the imp with fire? I mean as a player I wouldn't know that and the DM could say something like: "Firebolt hits the imp but soon after you hear an evil laugh while flames slowly disappear into thin air...The creature is left unscathed" Or how else should this conduct?

    • @melkiorwiseman5234
      @melkiorwiseman5234 4 года назад +6

      @@nemanjaukic4261 I think you're talking about meta-gaming? Like the rationale is that the player's character wouldn't know that imps are immune to fire unless he'd experienced that before? But then you have the argument that certain things would be common knowledge, and other things may be known to the character due to previous experience.
      Unless imps have almost never invaded the material plane or people have never told tales about those invasions, it's very likely that "imps are immune to fire" would be known to everyone, unless the person comes from a background of both illiteracy and almost total isolation.
      My current D&D character comes from a background of studying the demonic (because "know thy enemy") and so it's highly unlikely that he wouldn't know that imps are immune to fire.

    • @nemanjaukic4261
      @nemanjaukic4261 4 года назад +7

      @@melkiorwiseman5234 Huh, I guess that would indeed be common knowledge in most cases. So if I were the DM and the player decided to throw a Firebolt at an imp, I would just tell him that his character knows that imps are immune to fire and he should choose another spell. Seems better than just allowing Fire damage.

    Hello, Nate! I'd like to thank you a lot for your work. If you remember I asked you a few questions about the starter set adventure about half a year ago, you were kind enough to help and... well now I'm running my own campaign in my own setting and we're having tonnns of fun. I already have great stories to tell: funny and dramatic and epic, and this is only the beginning.
    Certainly I've been reading and watching a lot of stuff about DMing, creating interesting NPCs and keeping players hooked. But WASD20 was a true starting point, an introduction, a "verge of endless worlds of adventure". RPGs and D&D in particular are unbelievably beautiful places to step into, but it sure is confusing for most people to discover. Your guidance reveals this old heavy carving door is but a curtain, waiting to let you in.
    I hope to see much more from you, your work is apreciated. Good luck to you, be happy and may the dice be with you!

    I've been into dungeons and dragons since I was like 13 years old but grew up in a time where it was almost extinct... Especially in the rural area which I live! So I am now 27 years old I own a few DM guides and Player/Monster guides. Read them all front to back and honestly know most of the rules. But have never been able to DM an actual game or even play a full quest/campaign with others. I have played a few for a couple days and even ran with some over the course of months even years. But honestly never sat down with more than 3 people and played regularly. But finally at almost 30 years old I can play Dungeons and Dragons! This weekend I will be DMing my first game with a set group who has planned to meet once at minimum and sometimes twice if everyone agrees weekly. Over the past few days I have been watching a few of your videos as a sort of "refresher" on the basic rules so I am not too clunky while running the game. Sure I know I won't be the DM wizard of the East Coast or anything. But hey I already know we are in for a great memorable experience and I am more excited for my friends than myself because they are going to be experiencing dungeons and dragons for their first time mostly and I plan on hitting them hard and immersing them so they continue to enjoy it. Here's to hoping! Thanks for the great videos, super glad I stumbled across your channel because it ended up being geared perfectly for a situation just like this. Don't ever feel like what you're doing is being done better by someone else on here... Because everyone who is doing videos of this type could appeal to a different person. Just so happens you appealed to me more than the other channels. Rock on!

    You knew Infernal, you could've talked with the Imp! But NO you had to be all fireball first ask questions later... poor little guy.
    Seriously quality video, I've been learning a lot from these videos and look forward to playing DnD with my family.
    Though, I probably will have to get a new Player's Manual since my old one from years back disappeared mysteriously.

      Thanks, Alan. I agree that there aren't many good guides out there. Just sitting down and reading the books seems to be the main way to get the rules, but I hoped to create something a little more engaging and educational. :)

    My favorite part of this video: “I stab the sword into him and move it up. The orc falls and spits blood in my face.” Caleb quietly in the background: “eww” 🤣
    I’m watching this series and the DM series because I’m trying to get my husband and 5 littles (3 girls and 2 boys all under 8) into d&d. I’ve never played before, but we wanted something that leaned more towards creativity and adventure as a family rather than just playing video games. This series is sooooooo helpful!! cool video I find this funny you choose an Imp. I run a warlock pack of the tome. We were facing a group of quasit and there masters.keep trying to tempt them into being my "FRIEND" Familiar. elixir (Healers feat treatments) gold food a home with me in my gnomish gypsy wagon. Managed to knock one out and i have it trapped in a sack.
    The party and DM did not know what to think of the Halfling Al-chemical Merchant trained by the Gnomes. That uses a potion slinger basically an Arcane Focus in the shape we would recognize as a double barreled shot gun. His name was Pep-Zzee Greenbottle and his elixirs had a little logo imprinted on the bottle Dr. Pepper. To me it sounds like a character Matt Clix might find fun

    I appreciate the info provided in these videos. I am just returning to playing D&D after a very long time... I first played in the mid to late '80s. I had a pretty massive collection of original edition, 2nd edition and some newer sets and books. I wish now I still had them... I did have a question about the plastic bases and cardboard "NPC's" You used in the videos, where are they from?
    I just bought the 5th Edition Starter Set, Essentials Set, Player Handbook, Reincarnated DM Screen, Druid Folio, several sets of Dice. Also bought an assortment of miniatures, and a massive "Skeleton Dragon" plus D&D Logo LED Light for display. I would like to get back into DM'ing after I learn more about all the changes to the game after all these years and Editions.

    Question: Why does the wizard have to roll an atack-roll if he casts firebolt and why doesn't he have to roll an atack roll if he casts flamestrike? You said if he casts flamestrike the creatures (i guess all in the range of the cone of the firestrike? even firendly ones?) have to roll a safing throw?

    Great series! Seriously, excellent work. They've given me a better grasp on what this game is. All the visuals helped a lot, but can you point me in the direction of where I can get those character sheets? I feel like I'll be able to adapt to my game if I were able to print out and use the same sheets you've been using to teach in theses videos. (And to be clear, I'm looking for a blank sheet for my own character. I'm not looking for a preset character.)
