9:51 Same feeling. xD Always makes me laugh. lol I still make the best of it like you did, because the DM still has the final say on everything. I just figure that he's an unusual imp with some quirks if anyone is saying he is supposed to have fire immunity and we all forgot until the last minute. xD
I've been into dungeons and dragons since I was like 13 years old but grew up in a time where it was almost extinct... Especially in the rural area which I live! So I am now 27 years old I own a few DM guides and Player/Monster guides. Read them all front to back and honestly know most of the rules. But have never been able to DM an actual game or even play a full quest/campaign with others. I have played a few for a couple days and even ran with some over the course of months even years. But honestly never sat down with more than 3 people and played regularly. But finally at almost 30 years old I can play Dungeons and Dragons! This weekend I will be DMing my first game with a set group who has planned to meet once at minimum and sometimes twice if everyone agrees weekly. Over the past few days I have been watching a few of your videos as a sort of "refresher" on the basic rules so I am not too clunky while running the game. Sure I know I won't be the DM wizard of the East Coast or anything. But hey I already know we are in for a great memorable experience and I am more excited for my friends than myself because they are going to be experiencing dungeons and dragons for their first time mostly and I plan on hitting them hard and immersing them so they continue to enjoy it. Here's to hoping! Thanks for the great videos, super glad I stumbled across your channel because it ended up being geared perfectly for a situation just like this. Don't ever feel like what you're doing is being done better by someone else on here... Because everyone who is doing videos of this type could appeal to a different person. Just so happens you appealed to me more than the other channels. Rock on!
You knew Infernal, you could've talked with the Imp! But NO you had to be all fireball first ask questions later... poor little guy. Seriously quality video, I've been learning a lot from these videos and look forward to playing DnD with my family. Though, I probably will have to get a new Player's Manual since my old one from years back disappeared mysteriously.
This is an excellent guide for new DMs in particular, which is something that is surprisingly lacking in terms of a guiding hand. Thanks for making these vids!
Thanks, Alan. I agree that there aren't many good guides out there. Just sitting down and reading the books seems to be the main way to get the rules, but I hoped to create something a little more engaging and educational. :)
15:21 - you're picking up the axe... you're already carrying a staff in one hand and a torch in the other... do you have to put one of them down? Can you hold two things in your hand at once, but with less proficiency?
Nate, I'm very new to DnD, but have done some other RP gaming over the years. Thanks much for your great videos; I've been looking at several things, but your approach for us newbies is outstanding. Thanks, keep 'em coming, I'll keep watching and learning!
You so an awesome job simplifying things. I don't use Minis or battle maps but they work well for walking though things like this. As a DM, you have really helped me be able to explain things to my PCs in very simple ways
These tutorials are awesome, thought it would take forever to understand D&D but these tutorials help, especially with an example of how they would work. Can't wait to start playing some games, thanks :)
My favorite part of this video: “I stab the sword into him and move it up. The orc falls and spits blood in my face.” Caleb quietly in the background: “eww” 🤣 I’m watching this series and the DM series because I’m trying to get my husband and 5 littles (3 girls and 2 boys all under 8) into d&d. I’ve never played before, but we wanted something that leaned more towards creativity and adventure as a family rather than just playing video games. This series is sooooooo helpful!! Even 8 years later!
Nate you can actually always cast lower level spells in a higher level spellslot even if it not states "cast at higher levels", in that case the effect just doesn't change

That uses a potion slinger basically an Arcane Focus in the shape we would recognize as a double barreled shot gun. His name was Pep-Zzee Greenbottle and his elixirs had a little logo imprinted on the bottle Dr. Pepper. To me it sounds like a character Matt Clix might find fun
I appreciate the info provided in these videos. I am just returning to playing D&D after a very long time... I first played in the mid to late '80s. I had a pretty massive collection of original edition, 2nd edition and some newer sets and books. I wish now I still had them... I did have a question about the plastic bases and cardboard "NPC's" You used in the videos, where are they from? I just bought the 5th Edition Starter Set, Essentials Set, Player Handbook, Reincarnated DM Screen, Druid Folio, several sets of Dice. Also bought an assortment of miniatures, and a massive "Skeleton Dragon" plus D&D Logo LED Light for display. I would like to get back into DM'ing after I learn more about all the changes to the game after all these years and Editions.
Question: Why does the wizard have to roll an atack-roll if he casts firebolt and why doesn't he have to roll an atack roll if he casts flamestrike? You said if he casts flamestrike the creatures (i guess all in the range of the cone of the firestrike? even firendly ones?) have to roll a safing throw?
Great series! Seriously, excellent work. They've given me a better grasp on what this game is. All the visuals helped a lot, but can you point me in the direction of where I can get those character sheets? I feel like I'll be able to adapt to my game if I were able to print out and use the same sheets you've been using to teach in theses videos. (And to be clear, I'm looking for a blank sheet for my own character. I'm not looking for a preset character.)

It's going to be fun playing the world's most annoying bard (She plays the accordion and bagpipes, plus everything she writes is to the tune of Hot Cross Buns) so I need all the help I can get.
thanks so much! I wanted to learn how spells work and i learned the basics on this video. Great job on explaining!

Thanks Nate! I'm hosting a campaign and I needed a little clarification with magic in 5e. Learn something new everyday on your channel!
Excellent! Thanks for stopping by, Flagnar.
Dude thanks!! This is the first time I feel like I understand gameplay. You are a great teacher!!
Thank you! Enjoy playing!
Great video. We just had our first session last night with me being the DM. One of the players is a Wizard and I had know idea how to handle spells had they chosen to use them. This really helped. Thank You.
Great! Thanks for the comment. Happy gaming to you and your friends!
Really love this channel!
Thanks! This channel thinks you're pretty swell too.
My school has a d&d club, without knowing anything about d&d I joined. You have saved my life Ty
Great. Have fun!
tysm! can you make a guide on how to be a paladin? That's my starting class and I'm super exicted about it.
9:51 Same feeling. xD Always makes me laugh. lol I still make the best of it like you did, because the DM still has the final say on everything. I just figure that he's an unusual imp with some quirks if anyone is saying he is supposed to have fire immunity and we all forgot until the last minute. xD
Great now I just need some people to play with
winter pine aaaah, same! Everything is prepared but there is nobody i know who interests in RPGs or are smart enough to play!
Yeah, all thats left now are some friends. XD
I can't believe you rolled 20 and 1 on camera!!!
I’m glad I’m not the only one who uses wrapping paper to draw maps and areas
I don’t even like d and d but you're great, what an excellent teacher. Maybe I do like d and d...
Thanks for a great series of videos Nate! Am new to D&D and having a ball playing with my friends.
Awesome! Glad you and your friends digging it. :)
Still helping people to this day. Thank you 🙏🏾
Thanks for watching. :) Happy gaming.
rofl. "Are we having a good time here? Better believe it!"
Sometimes my family's sessions can get like that. Working on my DM style though. lol
Rock on!
Thanks so much, Evan. This whole comment makes me smile, a lot. I'm excited for you. Hope it goes well and feel free to report back! :)
Haha. It's true. Shaunis is a jerk!
Proloy your brother cus he was jealous that you were playing such a cool game
Finally, the only thing i didn't understand yet
Thanks this really helped me understand magic especially with how known and prepared spells work
1:40 ...uhhh...you don't want to know...
+WASD20 you DEFINITELY succeeded!
Thank you so much. I’m new and these helped a lot
Thank you so much for this excellent tutorial.
Well thanks!
You so an awesome job simplifying things. I don't use Minis or battle maps but they work well for walking though things like this. As a DM, you have really helped me be able to explain things to my PCs in very simple ways
That's great! Thanks so much for the comment.
I think he's a middle school teacher so it makes sense lol
Caleb moving the dices for you lmao sooooo cute
Great Tips. I'm Soo Green. Thanks again.
Thanks for uploading this series. Top work, it has been really helpfull.
u are awesome i am young and u have been helping me learn play d&d very easily u are awesome and i will continue watching your channel :)
Awesome. Thanks, Luke. :)
These tutorials are awesome, thought it would take forever to understand D&D but these tutorials help, especially with an example of how they would work. Can't wait to start playing some games, thanks :)
Cool! Happy gaming.
Nate, we all love your videos, and you're hilarious! Thanks so much for making these! They're a huge help.
Thanks for watching! :)
Your videos have made me decide that I’m going to be the dm from now on
I still have to play d and d for myself but so far you are clearing things up for me so thanks!!!!
Great! Glad it's helpful.
9:41 I was expecting that. Just intuition. Inferno spell, inferno creature, it has fire in it ;)
Dudee thank you so much. These series are helping me so much!!
No problem. Happy gaming!
Great great job! Thanks a lot for this.
thank you. im a new DM and i have no idea what im doing, but you saved me. SUBING
Thanks for that! Glad you found it helpful.
Enjoying this, good helpful series as a refresher or for new players
you are amazing I started a camphene with my friends and I learned a lot from you. :)
These videos will save me
1:50 I can swear this is not 1080p :))) (Don't zoom in cameras if you don't have optical zoom, just move them closer to the stuff if possible.)
Good work, I like watching your video's!
My favorite part of this video: “I stab the sword into him and move it up. The orc falls and spits blood in my face.” Caleb quietly in the background: “eww” 🤣
I’m watching this series and the DM series because I’m trying to get my husband and 5 littles (3 girls and 2 boys all under 8) into d&d. I’ve never played before, but we wanted something that leaned more towards creativity and adventure as a family rather than just playing video games. This series is sooooooo helpful!! Even 8 years later!
It’s a great family activity! Happy gaming 😁
@@WASD20 I’m very excited!! Thank you so much for all you do!! Do you have any videos or recommendations on videos for d&d with younger kids?
these vids are really helpful, thanks!
Nate you can actually always cast lower level spells in a higher level spellslot even if it not states "cast at higher levels", in that case the effect just doesn't change
Thanks. Yeah, I just learned that thanks to +HeyThisIsBrian below. :)
+WASD20 Yes, he is right :) We always miss some minute details that are not always obvious at first glance!
But I thought I rather help you clarify this before more misinformation gets spread, I rather Ruleslawyer here then encountering it while I play :D
Absolutely! :) I just added a notation to the video to correct it as well.
Omg, thank you so much, understand how spells work now
cool video I find this funny you choose an Imp. I run a warlock pack of the tome. We were facing a group of quasit and there masters.keep trying to tempt them into being my "FRIEND" Familiar. elixir (Healers feat treatments) gold food a home with me in my gnomish gypsy wagon. Managed to knock one out and i have it trapped in a sack.
The party and DM did not know what to think of the Halfling Al-chemical Merchant trained by the Gnomes.
Here you go. dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/character_sheets
Thanks for the kind words.
+WASD20 Thanks! Keep up the good work!
I love your videos man! Thank you.
