Building An Office Desk with a Secret Wireless Phone Charger

- I built a custom office desk for my raised soundproof office. This desk looks so good. It spans the width of the office, appears to be floating in the space, and has a hidden qi phone charger built in. This is where I edit all my videos, including this one! I also built a stand for my second monitor to raise it above my laptop. Oh and right next to my computer is a candy dispenser, an important tool for any editing studio. Enjoy!

I actually really like the wood plug over the charger. Makes it easier to find the spot to place your phone! Still looks good too.
I agree! I think the mistake actually worked out in his favor
My exact thought too!
Thought that too! Sometimes a curse turns into a blessing.
This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection ruclips.net/user/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.
It's really cool how you show everything including the mistakes.
That chip you had to put in for the qi charger is probably going to be more useful than you realise, at least if it was me I'd forget where the charger was constantly so having a visual reminder is actually quite nice!
I had another plan to discretely mark the charger spot, but I never got that far. The circle has been working out great!
Really awesome video man. Have a great weekend, Andreas 🇸🇪
Your work is always great, but mostly I want to say that I love that you were watching The West Wing, which is easily my favorite show ever.
It’s my favorite too!
the circle looks really good and helps know where to put it
So interesting. Good for you. Look forward to seeing the next video.
I stayed for the rascals. LOL
Nice job on fixing the charger problem. Also, I was super happy to see that you added some acoustical panels. Mix matching the colors was a good idea. Nice work.
Great desk Ben. Good save on the charger challenges!
From a distance, the "hole" looks like a wood knot! Well done! Also, instead of X marks the spot, "circle marks the spot!" Also, I looooove the "West Wing!" Thanks for the ending with your dogs! ❤😎😁😷
Hey yea it does look like a knot!
I think it's pretty clear your desk making activity got in the way of the ball activity for the dogs.
A nice self build workbench,
still working on the ground!
Your videos inspire me. Amazing work.
It has been 5 videos since Ben has put something on wheels.
I watch a lot of vids like this on canceltube, you by far have the best. You think of everything
GewTube hates German DNA
Great job! I appreciate how honest you are about owning your mistakes and pointing out the attitude it takes to turn them into positives.
That office looks great.
These videos are always comforting for some reason
Great job Ben!
Ben! Dude this is so good! Keep it up enjoy these videos
Thanks dude!
Wood working, Dodgers, Film Industry AND West Wing. I just found a new favorite youtuber. Keep em coming!
Your videos just make me want to go to Home Depot, buy tons of wood and tools and start building stuff. but I don't know anything about it! You should do some online classes!!!
Great video?!! Love when I get an alert that you have a new video up!
Great attitude and lesson when you pivoted after punching through your desk. Your new desk turned out awesome.
It looks great!!! I love that ur puppy’s are always right there with u and u take the time to throw the ball for them rather than yell for they to get bck. ❤️
You are inspiring. Wish I could be like you
You’re right.. the hole did happen for a good reason! It’s way easier to find the charger!! Not to mention I love the look! Great work!! 👍
Great Work! Beautiful Result! Liked !! Subbed !!
A VGA to HDMI adapter would have sufficed but treating yourself is always a nice touch to a project well done 😁
You know it!
Hell yeah you got the old school hitachi sliding chop saw !!! I still have mine one of the best saws I've ever owned..
Felt genuine happiness when I saw this recently uploaded. Growing channel :)
My heart sunk when you punched a hole through that beautiful sheet of wood.
We've all been there!
Looks good! Thanks for sharing.
Great project - it must have been devastating when that router punched through! I think your solution was fantastic.
Also, something I thought was funny - while watching the video an ad poped up - and I know google tends to play ads that are relevant to the channel or the viewer - but this ad was for a Loriel Eyebrow trimmer.... Maybe google know something that I don't !!
I’m still concerned about the ventilation in the room
He's never allowed to fart
Beautiful desk even after the painful blowout.
If I may suggest only screw the seck to the brackets at the back. The wood is going to want to expand/shrink with humidity and having it screwed down everywhere could cause issue. I certainly could be wrong.
Really enjoyed this - impressed how you did it all alone
Really appreciate that you showed your mistake… Way maintain a positive attitude - The desk, and the set up looks awesome.
That's a really great idea for an office space. I think I'm gona do something similar.
Thanks for the inspiration!
Dude, you are very good!
A think a swirly resin potato chip would have looked awesome! A couple of LEDs behind it to light it up, job done! =)
I know it was due to an unlucky routing but this solution (chippie) actually makes locating the charge point EASIER, no? Brilliant!
The circle charger looks good.
I personally think that phone charger from the top looks better with the mistake. I like how you can see the circle from the top so you know where to place your phone. I would love to work at this desk! Nice work!
i love wood and tecnologi so im verry happy to see use them bothe
to be onest i love it when you literly post anything i always love your videos
Great 'warts an all' video. Love the high rise office idea too.
Nice! Looking forward to seeing the gueshouse vids too!
I see a lot of router projects in the future, just for practice! No! More likely a CNC machine! 😕 Also, you have the "Ultimate Workbench" so why work on the floor??? 😹 🙈
He doesn’t have dust collection yet
He mentioned in the video that he has had the new desk for a few months and he must have built it before the ultimate workbench
Dream House + Dream Workshop! Need to start getting serious on my end.
On man, my heart absolutely sunk when that router cut through! Good for you for having a positive attitude and pushing through. That attitude is probably a big contributor to your success here on RUclips and in life in general. Keep up the great work, I look forward to these videos every week!
You should build your dogs a "ball pitcher" - Regards Fan from Norway!
Thanks for sharing. Its cool when you show the mistakes and how you fixed them.
Nice! Enjoy your videos! 👍🏽👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Hey man not sure if you've maybe already made this change, but you should look to get monitor arms. They free up so much desk space, and make your monitors so much easier to position. You can either get one that mounts directly to your desk (either on the edge of the desk, or via a grommet hole), or, you can mount it on your wall (similar to a TV). You'd gain so much working area on your desk. I'd never go back to standing my monitors directly on my desk.
Looking cool!!! Nice job guys!!👍😎
I can't stop watching your videos. Very inspiring!
How do you make sure you dont sufficate in that room?
My heart sank with you when the router went all the way through! 😱
I don’t wanna be a “told you so” but if you had better extraction... well. ANY extraction really 😜 you’da seen what was happening immediately and probably been able to fix it easily with a bit of filler.
That said. These things happen all the time. I’ve learnt a new way of dealing with it. Wabi sabi (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabi-sabi) - the ancient Japanese art of embracing imperfection and celebrating the beauty of a naturally imperfect world.
Your office looks incredible. A really nice space to be in (and watch over your scrapping dogs)
Well done! 👏👏👍
Nice touch with the "Sports Authority" weights. Some Sports Authority locations became Home Depots.
Great video, thanks! I've been considering something similar for a while now. I love that your dogs always want to play... and I'm stoked that you're watching West Wing!
Keep up the good work buddy looking forward to your success
Hi excellent video where did you get the sound proofing from.
Let's just say that I AM SUPER JEALOUS!!! Amazing job!!!
Did you add an exhaust fan in the office?
Idk why I’m watching this but its amazing and mesmerizing. Good work bro
I think I just realized that I love the dog bloopers more than the actual video content itself lmao!
That West Wing Cameo at the end 👌🏻
Hi Ben. As usual I love everything you do but one thing is beginning to get to me now. That is you hopping up to get inside your office. I'm a fair bit older than you and these days I suffer with rsi (repetitive strain injury) it's not something you think about about at your age but boy I wish I had! Please think ahead about repeated motions to give yourself a more comfortable life when you get on a bit, put some small steps in there or what about a bouncing pad? Could be fun.
You can tell what sort or person you are by how you treat your dogs. You seem to be a good person. Also, I find your video's interesting.
Whats the machine called with which you made holes for the plugs in the desk?
Never really went too the building side of yt. Makes me wanna build my own desk too
Why not hanging the monitor(s) on the wall directly? How is the air quality in there? Does it get hot and stuffy or cold sometimes?
Even if its not seen its good to stain and finish all sides of the project. It will maintain equal wood movement. uneven finish can result in worse cupping/warping. Being in California that might not be as much of a concern.
Was it the router bit slipping out or the small base that was not supported at all sides any more? I would attach a larger piece of thin plywood under the router to make the base wider when making a hole that big. But nice fix, makes the place where to put the phone more visible.
Your getting there Ben, your so clever..
Waiting for your next creation. 💪💪💪
Now you just need a badass pc for that bad ass office
I love the desk! What a great concept and ai totally approve of West Wing. :D
I see you have a self adjusting router, a feature which used to be included in every Craftsman router. I guess Ryobi thought they needed that feature too. 🤣
I loved every bit of this video! Thank you for this!!
When I see the circle and channel for the charger, I can’t help but be reminded of The Witness’ environmental puzzles.
You can take the Ben out of the engineering program but can’t take the engineer out of the Ben.
When u made the mistake with the router my thought was "its not a bug, its gonna be a feature!"
And we have a saying here, if u fell of a horse, you have to mount it again right away.
Dont let the fear of routers win! :-)
That’s great! I won’t!
"So I HAD to upgrade my monitor..." haha, Good for you. New monitor looked dope in the corner!
It was sooo unfortunate...😉
Vga to HDMI adapter exists but new monitor 😏
could easily unplug and use the other side instead of buying a new one
Hi pal. Nice desk! It might be worth installing a a few batons (just screwed on probably) underneath that run perpendicular. The thin boards have a really good chance of cupping over time due to only being biscuit jointed. Perhaps they brackets will be sufficient, but i suspect the batons would help!
The dog is amazing
excellent video friend! I have a question, what are the measurements of your office? do you have a video of how you built it? Regards
Bro i appreciate the way you handled that mistake
Really nice work. What are you doing for ventilation in your office?
cool project, I recently did the wireless charging mod. If you ever attempt it again! you can squeeze a couple more mms of clearance by removing the charger from the housing. I've had that happen, where the bit starts to slip, very annoying.
Another great video! Desk is beautiful. Do you sand in between coats of poly?
Thanks! I don’t sand between layers. That may not be the best of practices but I’ve always been happy with my final products
What would be really rad, if you had a beast PC in there and routed a fan exhaust to take all the heat out of the space.
I have a similar setup at home where I have my PC in a spare room with all the cables routed through the wall.
I have that same battery Ryobi router and it has done that to me too. ☹️ I love Ryobi tools but not all of them perform like they should.
Nice office! Did you intentionally plan to have the office high above the storage ?
That came out so good! Any idea what may have caused the stain to be lighter in the circular area around the QR charger hole repair?
It's almost certainly the wood filler taking the stain differently than the wood. He really slathered it on there. It may have soaked into the wood a bit, I know glue does this but never had it happen with filler. Either way, assuming it's not a trick of the camera, it would have to be sanded down more aggressively to remove the filler from the surface of the wood.
Great work^^
But I don't like, that you see the big round shape of the hidden wireless charger. That could have been more subtle, like "The X marks the spot".
That big round space looks like a coaster^^
Bro... You handled that a lot better than I would have. What's your secret, all that Cali sunshine and good living??? Nice recovery though, I would have burned the whole thing and started over LOL!!!
2:53 why not use the nice new work table?
Nice job. But why not use wall mounts for the pc monitors? I think it’d look much cleaner having them float above the desk. Much more free desk space and you can easily upgrade monitors without worrying if the base/legs will fit on the stand you made.
