    I've seen people saying "omg he forgets what it's like to be a newbie with bad gear."
    I had to deal with weaker heals, tanks with no tank stance, no passive defense trait, cleric stance, no Hall of the Novice Gear (hell, game starts you with more gear now than it did back in 2.5) and more. Guess what I did? Did DPS as a healer. I don't give advice I myself wouldn't use.
    As for the "bad gear" argument? A Cure 1 in Sastasha does about 200 HP of healing. Guess for how much it heals while naked, except for a weapon? 160 HP. The game literally hands you more gear than that and NO GEAR is only a 20% swing. There's no excuse for "a newbie doesn't have the toolkit to do any DPS." That's just gaslighting everyone who has done it since the beginning and assumes all newbies are undeserving of even ATTEMPTING to be more than a Cure 1 spammer.
    And it's almost as if I present the topic of Green DPS with nuance by saying "take it slow, some tanks need more healing than others" and etc.

      I took up conjurer as my first job with 0 prior MMO experience, and I think for my first few dungeons I was even wearing crafter gear because I thought defense stats were all that mattered. Even then I did what I could to DPS between healing. I don't get why some people so adamantly insist that healers shouldn't DPS, not just because it doesn't make sense, but like... it's so boring? Even if you ARE using your full toolkit and DPSing it can be mind numbingly bland. I can see where people who tend to overheal are coming from, at least, because maybe they have more anxiety around healing and are afraid of letting people die, but people who insist on ONLY healing confuse me to no end. On that note, I would kill to see healer DPS become more interesting. I'm doubtful SE will ever implement anything more complex for healer DPS, but I can dream u-u

      @@Ash-vu1et Its super easy to pop off a heal aero, check tank health, stone, pop off a heal, stone. Even easier later when you get regen! Granted Im just lvl 50 and haven't started the tougher raids/dungeons yet but so far I have no problem keeping up DPS and Im brand new to the game!

      I started playing a new character with my tank friend and I played SCH and they played WAR, from Sastasha to level 50 content we had nothing but leveling gear we got from dungeons (story skipped and just dungeon spammed from 15+) and she pulled wall to wall in every single dungeon. We never wiped. I ran out of MP sometimes and had to spam healing sometimes but even then I still had room to DPS. It's literally that easy. Default dungeon upgrades, having a tank who can roll their cooldowns properly, and a healer who isn't afraid to GCD heal when shit goes bad and everything is possible.

    One thing with slide casting, if you have emotes somewhere on your bar they will be grey'd out when you are casting, but will light up when you are able to slide cast. Not the most practical, but pretty good at teaching you where your window is. GL with healing!

    Sprouts, you may have heard the advice to disable party spell affects so that you can better see certain mechanics. This is true, however, if you disable spell effects completely, you will not be able to see the bubbles that healers plop down. Better to just set this to "limited" for your party, and disable for alliance.

    Thank you for dedicating an entire section to Cure 2 V Cure 1. It’s actually insane how often I have to correct people telling WHM to spam Cure 1 instead of just casting Cure 2 because C1 “uses less mana.”

    • @Mandegavelian
      @Mandegavelian 2 года назад +14

      This sounds like a leftover of WoW playstyle, where being efficient with mana is more important than in FFXIV (at least in my limited experience with FF). I've been using Cure 1 too at the beginning, since it's been hard-wired into my brain to spend mana efficiently. It's really nice, that this guide corrects this particular mistake :P

    • @HaibaneKuu
      @HaibaneKuu 2 года назад +29

      @@Mandegavelian It's just a common mistake because game doesn't teach you that. In fact, game teaches you the opposite. I know people like to say "read tooltips", but reading tooltips does show that Cure I is more mana efficient. Moreso, you get a trait that allows a free cast of Cure II if you cast Cure I. So, people assume that intended mechanic is to heal with Cure I and get free big heal. It is especially emphasized if a healer meets a badly geared tank or one who doesn't use CDs and runs out of mana spamming Cure II on him - which makes them feel that conserving mana must be important.

    • @GrimoireM
      @GrimoireM 2 года назад +11

      @@HaibaneKuu To be fair, WHM doesn't have Solace or Thin Air until Heavensward, Medica II isn't available till level 50, and it and Cure III don't have great MP budgets either. ARR White Mage really lacks GCD efficient options and the mana recovery that AST and Scholar have at those levels, so on them it is actually correct to take actions that help preserve your mana pool for emergencies in ARR, even with Lucid being better than prior iterations. The key really is to learn to lean on Regen, as not only is it a more GCD efficient heal, it also introduces the concept of healing proactively in clean manner, as it aids massively in WHM's MP conservation. Medica is sometimes better, but only in the sense that casting one or two of them is better than casting regen on the entire party, which has DPS gains. It doesn't matter in current content, but the skill does have use, and only serves to highlight just how powerful oGCD cooldowns across the entire role really are later.

    • @raleo7466

      For the 15h I've played of WHM (until lvl 45 rn) just use Cure II, it's better for your dps, unless tank makes a big pull and you become a healing bot who lives and dies by lucid dreaming. If you are happy to see a freecure, cease the DPS, blame the tank for not reducing their dmg and spam Cure I (and the godly freecure II) until being able to breathe xD

    • @reloadpsi

    When I began my journey I watched so many guides, so many videos (I knew without hesitation I was going to be a white mage) I was humble but also had this notion that I was totally prepared. No major mess ups... Until Dun Scaith, my first time, I was the only one left alive, boss was almost dead... And I forgot about LB3. I had never been in that situation before, and despite being well aware of LB3 and how clutch it is, in that moment I just forgot. You've said before on this channel that experience is vastly different from watching guides, and that is a prime example

      I really don't understand what's so hard for some people about the concept of healer DPS. The moment it was explained to me, it made sense-fights last shorter amounts of time, meaning that there's less of a chance of people dying. Pretty sure the reason people discovered green DPS was a necessity was because they couldn't beat enrage without the healers doing damage in early raids (like Coils early).

      I used to have tanxiety too and ended up maining tank. My tip is to try and go into dungeons with a full party of friends where you know they're patient and won't judge you. It's ok to make mistakes, that's a learning experience! Wiping in a dungeon or dying in general really isn't that big of a deal. If people get mad over wiping in party finder that's on them, there really aren't any stakes. Additionally, in my experience, whenever you mention you're new to tanking people are understanding and nice. That's not a given of course, but I hope you get those good experiences! All in all, try to push yourself beyond the boundary and try, you'll see it isn't as bad as anxiety would have you believe. No one will rage or blame you, and if they do they're big doodoo heads who can suck fat nards, as a famous bard once put it. And, finally, try to work your way up. Start with guildhests, then go into the 4 man primal trials. Next are full dungeon runs, then Trials/Normal Raids and finally Alliance raids. You've got all the time of the world, no one expects you to main tank an Alliance Raid boss tomorrow.
      This got a little longer than I thought, I wish you all the best and hope you have fun on your journey! 💙

      I expected to have healer anxiety but instead I have the tank kind haha. It doesn't really have anything to do with how I play, it's nervous about what kind of a healer am I gonna have to adjust to xD. I feel most 'out of control' on tank since I don't have the DPS of a...well, DPS, and can't heal through a difficult situation either. I say that about DPS since 'dead stuff quicker' is the best mitigation ;)

    As a healer main, I love to see a healing guide for new players but there are some corrections that may be important for a new player guide.
    On “Not all healers have them (AOE regens)” @ 17:50
    All healers actually do have them. All healers have at least two AOE regens. The healers I assume you’re referencing here (shield healers) both receive their AOE regens earlier than the pure healers. WHM actually gets its first AOE regen LAST of all the healers.
    SCH - Whispering Dawn lvl 20, Sacred Soil upgrade lvl 78
    SGE - Physis lvl 20, Physis II lvl 60, Kerachole upgrade lvl 78
    AST - Aspected Helios lvl 42, Collective Unconscious lvl 58, Celestial Opposition lvl 60
    WHM - Medica II lvl 50, Asylum lvl 52
    Conversely, all healers do not have an AOE shield. They all have single target shields but WHM lacks an AOE shield.
    On Swiftcast
    Not a correction, but I recommend that every healer try to Raise party members as soon as possible whether you have Swiftcast or not.
    On “No emergency button”
    When learning healing, Benediction is an emergency button.
    On Rescue
    Black Mages are one of the worst classes to rescue because you interrupt their cast and often cause them to drop their Enochian buff. Additionally, Black Mages have a movement ability that isn’t part of their rotation. You should prioritize your Rescues on party members that are essential first because they have aggro or a mechanic, on players that don’t have a movement ability next, on players whose movement abilities are part of their rotation third, and on players like Black Mages whose movement abilities are not part of their rotation (and are therefore always off cooldown) last.

      I've had to deal with mentor abuse for the last 5 years since the system was first implemented. I myself can't do that because of as I said. When most people use it, that's what they mean. A lesser player, and a lesser person.

      The crown is meaningless. It's just an icon. Wearing it doesn't mean you are better or less than other players, and being without it doesn't mean you can't act as a mentor to other players.
      Some crown-wearers don't conduct themselves well. Hence the stigma. Don't suppose you'd like to answer for the bad behaviors of other crown-wearers. Likewise, I don't answer for the actions of players who have been abusive towards those who wear the crown. It seems there have been bad behaviors on both sides. None of which has any bearings on my comment.
      As I've said, I don't know if you wear the crown, and frankly, couldn't care less if you do or do not. I consider you a mentor because of the guides you've made to help new players learn their jobs. Your actions make you a mentor, not the crown and certainly not the label.
      I came to express my gratitude. If you choose to take offense instead, that is beyond my control. The sentiment remains, regardless. Thank you for the guides you've made. They have helped me tremendously and I appreciate it.

    • @WeskAlber
      @WeskAlber  2 года назад +2

      I think you're not seeing my point, but I probably didn't present it well either. The crown is meaningless, but the way people treat it isn't meaningless. Bullying and abuse is rampant based on the icon and icon alone.
      Key word SOME crowns are bad. And no, I wouldn't like to answer for the bad behavior of other people. And yet daily I have to answer for them, whenever someone comes around to be insulting. My perspective is limited, but I'm willing to die on the hill of "there's more people who abuse mentors than there are abusive mentors." That's how rampant it can get. Especially with circle-jerky places like reddit, hypocrisy incarnate where people regularly admit to open mentor harassment because... mentors harass people and that is bad...
      I'm glad I helped and thank you for your thanks, but my mentor vid didn't come from nowhere. This is stuff we "real mentors" get abused with all the time. And it's very easy to join in a circlejerk when nobody cares about the context of the events. Literally broke 10 rules in the ToS and mentors kicked you for it? WELCOME BROTHER TO THE BK HATER BROTHERHOOD!
      "Real" mentoring actively welcomes harassment. "Fake" mentoring actively welcomes harassment. And what is real or fake differs from person to person because "not letting me be a literal neo-nazi" is fake mentoring to some. But the common denominator always runs back to "lmao bk crown."
      And the common denominator between me and all the other good mentors who get lumped in as "fakes" is also the "bk crown." The only difference is I have a youtube channel, which doesn't make me a shining beacon. So does the flat earth nazi who used NN to spread nazi propaganda.
      And yet if my actions are what make me a mentor, there are FAR FAR FAR more "good" mentors, than bad ones. Because I'm not that great.

      Overal perception of a good healer is often biased or misunderstood. Even if I don't like the term, "lower skilled" tanks won't like a healer that let them drop low before healing, but that usually is a sign of a good healer. I've had RDM & PLD cast heals on tanks or themselves because I was doing damage after a raidwide/mild tank buster, while nothing was happening in the fight for the next 20 seconds. And there's no point hardcasting a heal when I have a ogcd coming back in 10 seconds that'll top everyone off.

    Fun fact, I tried out both White mage and Astrologist, but Sage actually became my prefered healer class really early on, despite being a newbie. What helped me with the Sage specificially, was actually going onto The palace of the Dead with my friend, which gave me the possibility to learn from to bottom up. Now I am a lvl. 87 Sage, and despite still being nervous at times, I am growing more confident now. White Mage I think is still the most beginner friendly healer class, but it ended up not being my prefered one, personally. Haven't gottent to the Scholar yet, but I definitely love my Sage. But then why are you not around the corner with them? An AST is the only healer with a ranged aoe, even Sage is going to have the same aoe as WHM and SCH, aoe from melee point of origin, there's literally no reason to not be riding the tank like they are actually an American M-1 Abrams light tank.

Sometimes, because I could relate to certain situations and sometimes because I was realising I may not be as knowledgeable a healer as I thought.
    Always examining the tank when at dung start if you get the chance was great advice. I was gonna say to always gauge your tank/group to work out how much dps you can get away with and how much you need to be healing but checking gear can help as well. I always examined if things went wrong and a tank goes down like a lead balloon but doing so ahead of time can help both put your mind at ease and better prepare you.

    I genuinely cannot overstate the value of Focus Target on your tank. One wrinkle to that which you didn't mention is if you wanna go back to dealing damage, just press T to target whatever the tank is currently targeting. No need to click around trying to find the enemy while dodging.
    This has _massively_ improved not just my consistency as a healer, but also my confidence. Knowing that targeting the tank for healing is nigh-instant makes it much easier to limbo, and being able to swap to whatever enemy the tank wants to focus down improves my value as DPS.

Stick to the tanks heels cat regen+divine benison before or as the tank pulls. When the tank stops to control the ball of mobs. Swft + Holy+ asize. Then cure 2. Then holy again. 90% of the time this is how i handle the pulls.

    Especially with newer tanks I see a lot of people run in, grab a big mob, stop, start taking damage, then decide to run into the next room. Even if the healers close by I can see the frustration with stopping to cast (especially low level white mage) just to see that the tank is now out of range of that heal you prepared and has dangerously low health. This is something I mostly see in stone vigil since the enemies are starting to hit harder and well walls aplenty.

    I'd like to offer some healer advice on, arguably, one of the scariest mechanics you'll encounter: Doom. Doom comes in two flavours, 'health lowering', and 'mechanic cleansed'. As a healer, it can be scary to see someone get Doom and not know which one of these it is, and that's okay! If you have time to ask for any tips before a pull, a good party will warn you which kind it is. Otherwise, the biggest tell is HP- it'll, obviously, be lowered when the debuff is applied. A 'health lowering' Doom is your responsibility- you need to heal that person's HP to full, or they'll die. The other kind is 'mechanic cleansed'- think Sunken Temple of Quarn, with the glowy squares, if you're familiar. But yes, Doom looks scary, but you've got the tools to handle it.

    This is all great advice for a newbie healer getting into the role. The only bit of advice I take issue with is the pre-pull regen advice. Yes, you are correct that as long as you are near enough to the tank for them to aoe, that you will be safe... In theory. In practice, it can throw off a tank when they realize that some of the trash pack isn't following them and they have to readjust to figure out what is going on. Even less attentive tanks may not notice or may ignore that the trash mob has been split up entirely leading to a quick healer death and/or an irritated newbie tank.
    It is still an excellent practice to get into using Regen a little before the pull has been stopped and fully gathered, but I would highly recommend to sticking to shields earlier on or during the pre-pull instead of using regen early enough to steal hate.

    • @WeskAlber
      @WeskAlber  2 года назад +1

      The thing is, if you are following the tank, the enemies also follow the tank. The tank should make sure to hit every enemy before moving on. If they run off without establishing aggro, that's bad tanking not bad healing.
      The tank shouldn't be trying to pull big if they don't know the basics of "do 1-2 attacks and hit ALL enemies" before moving on.
      In practice, I've never had an issue. Because I am ON TOP of them. WHM tendencies

It doesn't help that the healer I'm leveling now, Astrologian, has a trait that gives your tier 1 a chance to make your tier 2 a guaranteed crit. So far in FFXIV mana has never been a problem. It's always regenerating and the 1 minute CD on the mana regen role action is honestly almost too generous for how much it gives you back.

    One thing about enmity being a tanks game…be careful with benediction. If you’re in a dungeon with an NPC or in the southern front with a tanking NPC and they’re one with a ton of HP (as in millions) where healing them seems to not move their bar at all…if you hit them with benediction it WILL work and fill their HP but at a cost, you’ll immediately rip enmity from everyone and everything and even provoke and/or other taunt skills won’t put them back on a tank (I assume the enmity generated by those skills are capped or something) so you’ll have to kite or die until the fight is over. I made this mistake and assume it would also apply to a situation where you’re spamming heals and they actually need it for an extended period or if the tank hasn’t gotten their enmity up enough.

    100% dps 60% tank 40% healer may be true against bosses, but in dungeons i find that the healer damage is way higher than that. I track my dps as white mage, and I routinely match or exceed the dps’ damage by slapping regen on the tank, using assize, and then spamming holy. This includes runs with friends who know dps rotations and do their best to go fast, so it’s not just bad dps players. IMO if you’re using a gcd to heal during dungeon pulls either the tank is undergeared or something else has gone wrong. So I 100% agree with your point, just wanted to underline how much of a difference green dps makes.

      I'm almost afraid to ask but... Does it make sense to stack regens on the tank when one regen isn't enough and dropping, say, aspected helios on top of aspected benefic on top of celestial opposition etc.? Do those properly stack?
      I somehow got into a habit of using asp helios or a cheap ogcd 'on top' of the benefic regen somewhat regularly early or in the middle in pulls to try and keep the tank from dropping fast at peak mob times, and be able to spread out cooldowns more. The bonus regen on the other party members means I can entirely ignore them even if should one of them blunder right into something early, if they go below half health they'll patch up comfortably quickly. Gives me more time to spam gravity and help thin the pack asap, I can easily dps for quite a while and weave the occasional small heal on the tank this way until there's only stragglers left.
      I just really loathe having to benefic II and almost never do, so anything that lets me slow down how fast the tank plummets and control better when to ED I greatly prefer over ending up playing IV drip with second tier ST heals.

      Also, Synastry on the tank applies additional 40% healing on single target spells (just the initial heal, not the regen so don't use it for Aspected Benefic) so you're missing out on a 980 potency Benefic 2.

    I still remember the weeping city of mhach i used rescue on the other healer to not die to mega death. And the rescue i did on the dragoon who kept being hit by draw/cast on e12N right before ifrit aoe. Saving someone with rescue is SO satisfying xD (and pulling people back to the atomos pads in LoTA is fine too)
    That weeping city battle was a struggle by itself though. Lots of people dead i had to hardcast so many raises because the other alliances healer kept dying, plus the people in my own team. Was still really fun though lol

    Only time I'm unapologetic to my tank about him getting out of range is, sprout here so I have cutscenes for story to watch so at the beginning of each I say hi and "first time here" so they know to keep their eyes open. Otherwise yea, 100% agree with you that you and your tank tend to have the same movement speeds, so it shouldn't be too difficult to keep up :)

    I sometimes think back to this one dungeon run I did on my WHM. I was keeping everyone above 50% health, I was using Benison to mitigate tankbusters whenever the first boss was casting one, and I was using Holy plenty in AoE packs both for the damage and the stun. Then sometime just before or just after the second boss of that run the tank says "someone took the glaremage meme too seriously lol, no heals." I said back that I was making sure no one got too low on HP, I wanted to help them take less damage by stunning things for them, and that I was even making sure not to overlap my AoE stun with their Blackest Night, so I don't see what the problem is, but alright, I'll cast more heals I guess. So I did. Then at the end of our deathless run they said "read a guide before wasting three other peoples time in DF" before leaving the instance. Like ??? LOL everyone survived the whole run, I never asked them to slow their wall to wall pulling (I'm all for that), and I even tried to help them mitigate. Not sure what more that guy wanted from me for that Qitana Ravel run.

      Had one sprout DPS telling me in Sastasha (hard) that I should be using Diurnal sect (instead of Nocturnal) for that first boss in the dungeon because party members kept getting one shot by the boss. I ignored him, turned to the tank, and explained that he needed to interrupt that move as boss is casting it. Problem solved.
      Every time ppl take damage or die, they blame the healer or thinks the healer sucks, while not knowing anything about mechanics or mitigation.

    I spent way too long using Physick as a Scholar and ignoring Adlo and Lustrate. Not only is it ineffecient, you will straight up wipe your party in any dungeon over a certain level. I got called out in Cutter's Cry, not in a mean way, but I was so embarrassed I actually sat down and learned my toolkit lol. This was in my first month or so of playing, and my first MMO ever, so I was the epitome of noob.

    One way I use to prioritize what DPS to raise if you've got multiple dead is the Weakness or Brink of Death debuff. People who don't have one of those get raised first because, all things being equal, they're doing better in the fight than those who have already died before and may just up and die again a few seconds after I raise them
