40:54 According to FDR, who was the president during WWII and fought the fascists, said:
“The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerated the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than the democratic state itself. That in its essence is fascism: ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or any controlling private power.”
According to this, we are a fascist state. You can verify this by looking at public opinion polls, and then look at what the rich and corporations want. There is no debate on this.
I've never quite understood what fascism is till reading this comment.
@Jim Jones were not a republic were an oligarch
@Jim Jones lol thankyou
We're a plutocracy and oligarchy ... Fáscist... May apply
Jim Jones a Republic is a form of democracy.
Excellent.
These are terrible times indeed. Militarism is the epitome of Gog and Magog or western civilization.
A core of this lecture - ending capitalism has massive implications and one that Professor Prashad superbly concludes that it is something that people cannot even imagine about. But it is not only the elitists who are affected and drawn by capitalism and do everything possible (however immoral) to hang on to the status quo; the greed has pervaded to the lowest strata of society and we have ensured that the next crop to replace them will be no different. How can they? How will we, first of all? (how can they question doesn't arise once we have righted ourselves.) We all speak and think differently in public spheres and private lives. Once an ordinary person who rails against the powerful and corrupt lands on a desirable position himself, he absorbs the pervading mentality amongst his social circle. This is no transformation from white to black. He was never really different in the first place; he never really inculcated self-discipline and accepted that capitalism benefits only a minute percentage of people and that this was wrong. He is angry, only as long as he is not a beneficiary of it.
I see, because everyone is greedy it is OK for you to be greedy? Problem is, Capitalism is by intelligent design, to establish by experience why it is that a freewill is impossible so long as you have more wealth then needed to have a comfortable life. For a freewill is only possible when you are not enslaved by an addiction, such as the insatiable lust for the glory and power of wealth being an addiction impossible to break until after you give all wealth to the poor.
Agreed. karthika's argument (and it is also the"biological" argument in favour of capitalism) is that it is innate to humans. Anthropology tells us otherwise. That is why the narrative centered on a more correct understanding of human history is key in defeating the ideology of capitalism and the profit motive. That is also why great thinkers of the left like K. Marx and R. Luxembourg, F. Fanon and E. Saïd focused a mlot on the historical contexts.
One of his best by far.
Good analysis...
The fork in the road for the US was not 9-11, it was in Berlin in 89. The choice back then was a multi lateral world with regional powers. Or an unilateral power with the US in charge.. this was the dangerous choice "Our way or the highway"..
Awesome
We are going to have to make a choice, Socialism or Corporatism.
Excellent speech ... Horrible camera man. I wish there was just an audio podcast of this.
The point I would take away from this despite all the understandable & excellent depiction of American Policy Prof. Vijay Prashad makes and says that the Social budget is at its best 14% of the entire US budget why are tax payers footing the bills of Corporate America specifically the Military Industrial Complex.
Our post-1970's USA is best understood as an a) aircraft carrier, b) offshore bank and c) propaganda complex. Then our USA makes a great deal of sense.
excellent
*On a positive note!*
One major benefit that all of us enjoy from the USA's military insanity is TECH.
Yeah, from your micro-wave to Smartphone including the Network were using right now.
Explains why all the cool shit always come for there.
After they send our jobs overseas and put most of our manufacturing jobs out of business they then increased the size of government in the form of military and other government jobs to employ the middle class
HOLYY…….😯😶
incredible. drop the mic
So long as the evil doers deed does not bring forth fruit, he thinks it is like honey. When his deed eventually brings fruit, he suffers indeed.
Can't even hear the questions, so what is wrong with the people that organise these evens?
my objection to his words about ATM and job losses.... this particular thing was senseless..
In hindsight, how did any of the succession beginning with LBJ manage to fool anyone? In fact, the same applies to most of the succession prior to LBJ.
R.i.p headphone listener's
👍Succinct answer, fools won't understand his answer.
He looks brazilian
Event organizer not doing the job, no mic for patron. 👎
Nice speech, but very poor camera 📸 work...
Can anyone name any of these "sensible countries" and why is he careful not to mention them
When he attributes the term “Scandinavian” you could safely assume hes referring to places like Norway, Denmark, or Sweden.
.Smart...'militairy socialism' 9.40 LOL
What a disrespectful introduction! How White and actually Yankee [of the introducer]!
Actually this was BS. At minute 19..Trump never gets down on Mexicans about anything. Trump spoke about people who are into criminal activity or are mentally against work who cross the border illegally.. How many times has Trump spoken against white supremacists and such. I've heard him several times in different scenarios.
Disgusting, ignorant and dangerous.
