  • In May 2024 we ran an all-day Djembe and Dundun Drumming Workshop in the beautiful village of Youlgreave in Derbyshire!
This workshop focused on the fascinating 'echauffement' rhythm passages in West African djembe and dundun drumming.
For those who don't know, 'echauffement' is the French term for 'warm-up'. In djembe and dundun music, the echauffement (or 'chauff' for short) is a musical passage in the rhythm where there is an increased intensity in the beats, creating a sense of heat and fire in the music.
It is traditionally used for dancers in a cultural village rhythm event where dancers come into a circle and interact with the drums.
At 'Djembe Fire' players and dancers from around the UK joined me in exploring the echauffement arrangements for a rhythm called 'Musolu' .
While Musolu is traditionally played at naming ceremonies, it is very similar in structure to the Mamaya/Djagba family of rhythms which are played in Guinea Conakry during the Eid Festivals after Ramadan.
The workshop was so successful I am sure to run the workshop again in the future. If you would like to attend next time do get in touch: 👉 bit.ly/3L8xoBm

I want to be able to play the DunDuns. I struggle so hard to get both hands working independently of each other. Ie, Bell and drum. ❤

@@phillipdridge9775 hi Philip, learning the dunduns is such a great way to develop your understanding of djembe. I think k the part that can get overlooked is the bell patterns. They are often seen merely as filler but they are seen by many djembe Folas as the heart of the music (in the same way as clave is quite literally (translates as) the key to Afro Cuban music. Yes coordinating the two takes time. Philip have you looked at Djembe-Videos.com? This site is absolutely amazing and they provide a whole area in their site to developing dundun technique.
