The Lineup Review helped me understand how the regular and Max lines correlate. It's not usually my favourite part of your videos, but definitely helpful here. Well done, sir!
I suppose that section is like guide rails in shoes. not useful if you don't need it, and hopefully it doesn't become distracting. but useful if you need them
@kofuzi LOL nice comparison. I'll admit it often feels like rehashing the same info (when you watch every one of your videos, there's a lot of brand repartition)...but I understand why you do it for general viewers. Personally I'd prefer more outside-of-brand mixes/rotations. I rarely have my whole rotation in one brand, personally. They just don't work for me. Appreciate all your efforts though. 👍🙏
This shoe shipped late summer 2024, before the rash of softer squishier max stack shoes that released in the fall into the winter. The industry, the community, running ShoeTube etc. have been incessantly hyping the new softer, squishier foams since they began coming to market. I am glad Brooks at least seems to be holding the line on the squish. It will be interesting to see if Brooks continues to distinguish the Ghost and Glycerin lines, keeping the Ghost shoes firmer.
I'm glad that there are Brooks shoes that you like, and I think we would all agree (and please correct me if I'm wrong) that, even despite me and many of my colleagues perennially complaining about how we don't love the Ghost, the Ghost has remained true to itself. Brooks ain't changing it. Ever. so how should Brooks try to reach me and the many runners like me while also keeping the many runners like you happy? I discussed this at length in my Neo Zen video and also in my Hyperion Elite 4PB video. it's not zero sum. it's reaching out to different runners. as I see it, the value of the Max line is gives Brooks a way to speak to customers who aren't buying the regular line. I think of them as Ghost and Anit-Ghost. Glycerin and Anti-Glycerin. Same thing happened with ASICS. Cumulus and Cumulus Lite. Same thins is happening at Hoka. Clifton and Mach. Same thing is happening with New Balance. Fresh Foam X and Fuelcell foams. (NB probably has the most thoroughly developed execution of this concept) with Ghost Max and Glycerin Max (and to a lesser extent, Hyperion Max), I really felt like Brooks was following along this path in an exciting way that would not disrupt the existing fan base. but to see here that Brooks has narrowed the gap between Ghost and Anit-Ghost, it feels like a half-hearted attempt at a similar concept. like, this make me very concerned as to what we might get for Glycerin Max 2.
@@kofuzi I think the general approach the brands have taken so far, of having a line with softer midsole compounds and a firmer line, is probably the best approach we can hope for. So I have no problem with where things are for now. My concern is with the trend, and where things will end up if they continue on their current trajectory. As new much softer race foams come to into the market, the soft/firm dividing line seems to be drifting toward the softer end of the continuum, in much the same way that the dividing line between what was considered to be a standard trainer and a max-stack trainer has drifted progressively upwards in the last few years as designs have drifted upward in height. As I'm sure you know, 35 mm stacks were considered maximal cushioning only a few years ago; now 35 mm is considered relatively modest, suitable for a general-purpose everyday design. That said, there are still lower-stacked shoes coming to market (e.g. Adios 9), there are just fewer of them. But as long as some choices remain available I'll be satisfied. It's just such a trend-chasing, copycat industry though, just like most consumer product industries, that I'm a little worried about maintaining some balance. Just in the interest of full disclosure and so you know where I'm coming from, though my preference is for firmer shoes, I have never run in a Brooks shoe. Superblast 2 is my shoe of choice for most of my running but I do occasionally put on other shoes (Novablast 4 for everyday runs occasionally, Magic Speed 3 and AP3 for speed work, Clifton 9 mostly for treadmill, SL2 just for a change). SL2 is just about the softest shoe I have tried on and found to be worth buying.
I’ve never used Brooks shoes for daily running, as I like their special editions more for daily wear, but the Glycerin & Ghost Max have caught my eye for daily training.
I bought these shoes and gave them an honest try, but returned them. Beautifully crafted shoe. Looked and fit great at the office. Super comfortable. For exercise, I used them only for walking. Here is what I discovered: In foggy conditions they are very slippery. Felt like no grip at all. In dry conditions at a local university they felt unstable going up and down steps in an empty stadium. I tried some thicker socks that filled gaps and improved stability, but wearing thick socks made my feet hot. Just my experience. Try them and see if they work for you.
Hi. Well, I bought two pairs: Hoka Clifton 9, and Skechers Go Run Ride 11. They are both keepers, and both have their place in my rotation. I do 3 to 5 mile walks, longer on my city vacations. For running, I think I would give the nod to the Skechers. They are excellent.
Agree, having enjoyed the Ghost Max1, which I chose over a 2nd pair of Nimbus26 early last year, and liked much better than the Nimbus. I recently tried on the Ghost Max2 as well as the new Glycerin 22 and like the latter a lot more than a bunch of other LSD candidates of several brands, so have ordered it. It will be the first Glycerin for me.
Im usually not on line with you (thats not a bad thing, I watch you anyway) But I totally agree that the Ghost Max 1 was better than the version 2. Liked it much much more. But the Ghost Max 1 comes back under a different name.
I'm going on 500 miles with the Ghost Max 2. The durability is there. I will say, after running a demo in the Ghost Max 1, I expected the Ghost 2 to be equally soft. I sure was wrong about that. The Ghost max 2 is way firmer. I like the color way. I think it will still be great in retirement.
I’m a heavier runner at 200lbs and really love the ghost max 2. It feels soft but also reasonably responsive to me. My main complaint is the outsole, it just lacks grip in non-dry conditions. The upper feels a little more plush than the original max, which is sometimes nice and sometimes not. After 150 miles on the Ghost Max 2 (and 350 on the OG ghost max), I think I prefer the Ghost Max 2.
I remember trying ghost max on in the store and thinking “wow, this is firm”. I even like firmer shoes too, but I agree, this shoe should have been just a tad softer.
The Brooks Ghost Max 2 takes some time to break in. After using it for a couple of months, for me it is softer and more comfortable than the OG Ghost Max.
I totally agree with you dear Kofuzi. I have tried that shoe , it was just a brick on my foot...so firm and not comfortable. I dont' get the purpose of that shoe
Yeah I struggle a lot with Brooks styling, generally speaking. To me they look like 90s kids shoes from department stores... very Nickelodeon / Nerf gun / Mountain Dew / Pizza Pop. The combination of their logo and color choices... hard to pinpoint since all running shoes tend to be like that, but they just seem to hit the "90's car decal" look more than the rest, for me at least.
The Brooks Ghost Max 2 is expected to have a more durable midsole compared to the Brooks Ghost Max OG (as you experienced with V1).Ghost Max 2 should retain its cushioning and rocker function for more mileage before becoming too soft or flexible., Ghost Max OG: Uses DNA LOFT v2, which is soft but tends to compress over time, especially after 60 km
I got the originals late last year and loved them, and just got the 2 on sale with a view to rotating. I think the two has caused me knee pain after just two runs. Possibly cooincidence but either way I found them worse in any metric you can think of than the first Ghost Max. Also I found the 2 a tad smaller.
Still seems strange to me they run a parallel range to Ghost & Glycerin?! Thought if you want more cushion you chose Glycerin over Ghost but now got to compare normal Glycerin or Ghost to its max version!
yeah, my summary of the differences between the lines wasn't as succinct or clear as I'd hoped it would have been. maybe I can try another way. I don't see them most as cushion vs more cushion. I see them as, if you don't like the Ghost as a daily trainer, then you'll probably like the Ghost Max as a daily trainer. And if you don't like the Glycerin as a max shoe, then you'll probably like the Glycerin Max as a daily trainer. I think with the choice of using "max" as the modifier and with the choice of higher price points, that might not be exactly how Brooks marketing or finance departments see things, but I feel like that's what the product team is doing.
@ Great thanks that definitely helps. I’ve got some older Glycerins that I enjoy so given the price markup to the max I’ll probably stick with the regular version.
It’s kinda hard to find a shoe with a lot of cushion that isn’t super puffy these days. I guess they are just maxing out the overall comfort? But excessive puffiness I don’t find all that comfortable.
Glycerin Max, Puma Mag Max, and Mizuno Neo Zen come to mind. And Superblast and Cloudeclipse don't exactly fall in the max cushion category in my opinion, but those are other very tall, very well cushioned shoes that aren't puffy. I totally agree that puffiness is not required for a sensation of comfort
I think they are very different shoes that I use differently. I use the Glycerin Max as a recovery run shoe and super relaxed option. I use the Superblast for long runs that have some faster miles within them. In my end of year videos for 2024, they each won for best in their respective categories.
@kofuzi thanks. I just got a pair of Superblast 2's but haven't tried them yet. Every review I've seen on them has been similar to yours so hopefully I'll feel the same way. I have a 5 K coming up in a couple of weeks and thought that might be a good place to start. I'm running the Marine Corp Marathon in October, and planned on using them for long training runs. I have a pair of Saucony Endorphin Elites that I wore in New York last November for the marathon that I'll be using for the race. I don't really need another trainer yet, but was considering getting another pair of Superblast 2's if I like them after putting a few miles on them.
These days, I take it as a signal from the brand they don’t send me a pair to review. But I will still go back and personally fill in the gaps to make sure I’m at least aware of what is going on at brands. It might not make it into a full review like with this Ghost Max 2, but it might appear elsewhere. For example, i bought the Ride 18 that was discussed in the video. A lot of New Balance shoes I buy myself, too
Was hoping Brooks would bring its DNA Tuned foam to the GM2. And it's disconcerting that shoe brands keep sneaking stability elements into shoes whether you want them or not. They're like Oprah: You get a guide rail! And you get a guide rail! Everybody gets a guide rail!
I’m a teacher on my feet all day and find the Ghost Max to be so comfortable. I started searching for another pair recently and tried on the Ghost Max 2…absolutely did not like the changes. I can only describe the sole as hard and too firm. Not near as comfy for my daily walking. I’m sad.
I've found the original Ghost Max and the Ghost Max 2 to be rather narrow. It could be me (one of my feet is wider than the other), but I haven't found that issue with the Adrenaline (my normal shoe). Anyone else find this issue?
I think that'll be a while. I don't have either of those. I've never even seen superblast 3. to be blunt and a bit reductive, "modern" means it doesn't feel like a block of EVA with a quarter inch of full coverage rubber outsole

I wouldn't go so far as to call Ghost Max 2 a brick, but I'm not getting the same sense of refreshment as when I ran in Ghost Max 1
Yeah, I returned mines after one day. I couldn't fathom spending $150 for a pair of bricks on my feet. 🤷♂
I liked this shoe but both V1 and V2 have tapers on the lateral sides that rub my little toe.
