Update: I tried my Axiom Pearl at 2000, to match the Axiom Solid. I LOVE the result. So glad you guys made this video-I learned a lot, and, y’all saved a ball I’d have otherwise given up on.
What do you mean ? What did you do differently to the ball.? I have the axiom pearl been bowling with it fresh out the box probably like 15 games on it. I’m feeling like I need to change the hole layout or maybe sand it down? Or polish it? Even though I though fresh out the box was polished?
I would love to see a video like this with a symmetrical and asymmetrical core using the same cover. There is so much info on the internet about what asymmetrical balls supposedly do, but it would be cool to see a true A/B comparison with some Jungo insights on how they're reacting.
Out of the box my pro shop tech took the liberty of sanding an original Gamebreaker to 800 then polished it. I thought he had lost his mind. Hands down, best ball I’ve ever thrown with the most versatile surface I’ve ever seen on a ball. I’d bowl whole college tournaments with that ball - piping it up 5 and finishing lofting it over the gutter cap. I’ll spend the rest of my life chasing what that ball did.
I always actually change the surface of a new ball before throwing it - i know this sounds insane, but what i mean is if the box for a ball says 3000, then i will put use the spinner to put 3000 on it myself - that way i know exactly how to recreate that surface when it comes to resurfacing each ball!! purely because i strongly believe you will never recreate the factory finish even if you use the same pads/polishes. and yes i have ended up changing solid balls to be shiny and pearl balls to be dull for example, even though its a hybrid, i love the original Hyroad at 2000, i always felt it missing the breakpoint for me when shiny! but in saying that my hyroad max is now shiny haha
Great video per usual JR. I use your videos as teaching tools all the time. Excellent information. Maybe do a video showing the differences of polish. Such as 500 polish, 2000 polish, & 4000 polish on 2 separate balls (An Asym & a sym, or a reactive & urethane).
Awesome video. Totally by coincidence, I was wondering about this exact same experiment a few days ago. I have the Axiom Pearl and the Phaze III, and neither have been rolling well for me. I tried sanding both to 4000, and it improved them, but there was still something a little off. I’ll have to try what you did, and sand both to their solid (Axiom Solid and Phaze 2) counterpart’s box finishes. Thanks!
I'm a stroker and, like many others, I took Bowling This Month's advice and took the factory finish of my Phaze III down to 3000 by sanding. The changes are quite noticeable. Using BTM's numbers (they gave me their best guess on the post sanding numbers) here they are....Length 15 vs 6.5, Torque 8.0 vs 7.0, Back end 17.5 vs 16.5, Hook 54 vs 57.5. As you can see, removing the factory polish dramatically reduced the length rating and significantly increased the hook rating. I usually don't change box finishes but I'm going to keep this Phaze III at 3000 sanded. As such, it has become my "hook monster" ball.
Used to throw an old t-road pearl but it finally cracked so I went to a Hy-road pearl but it was a little too angular on the end so we sanded it from 2000 grit to 1500 grit and then repolished it. The roll phase starts just a little earlier and not so sharp so it is more forgiving but still strong. Funny note; Fixed the t-road cracks with JB wield (cracks were around the finger holes) and they have held up great! Note this is Colleen's husband Dave
I've never sanded a pearl, but I have sanded a shiny hybrid. I took my Phaze 3 and took 2000 to it. Helped the ball so much for me. It was so over/under before with the shiny cover on it.
Fantastic video. Don't think I've seen anyone do this sort of comparison as well, and to really try to get as close to "apples to apples" as possible. Great job guys, thanks!
As a novice bowler this was a really cool video to see. I wound up going with a Vapor Zone Hybrid as my first performance ball, so it would have been neat to see at least a small aside about hybrid style balls too.
I stumbled on a solid vs pearl video and it was a little confusing. It led me to this video and this really cleared it up for me. Great video! I love my pearl (Fatal Venom) and this really made me realize why I like it so much. Might have to have a couple pearls instead of just 1.
@Jr Pro Shop Can you guys post that ball Speed That I made for a suggestion next time? I feel like this would be good for people who are having trouble increasing or decreasing ball speed. Also Excited for this video tomorrow.
Have a badger tour drilled 70x4x80 for control and I’ve used it oob on chameleon and it looked good. For standard 40 foot house I polished it with motiv polish and I’ve hit i with a ctd 5k pad. I felt on house the 5k pad gave it a more consistent reaction on than polished. I noticed that when it starts leaving flat corners I just move in a little in and come around it and my pocket becomes big again. I have a money badger drilled pin up and I took the polish off of it and it shapes a little differently than when it’s polished. It doesn’t go as far down lane when the polish is taken off and the reaction isn’t as strong off the spot but sometimes I need a different reaction and shape than the oob cover.
Got bored one day and sanded a Brunswick Power Groove Reactive that's pearl/polished down to 500 grit. Probably atleast 6 to 7 more boards of hook out of a old entry level ball.
I typically bowl on house shots so I usually don't stray very far or at all in most cases from the out of box finish. Now if I'm going to bowl a tournament, then I'll bring the surface down on most of my equipment.
Really interesting info! I like the ball what it is and that's why I bought it actually. My emerald is always the shiny money! The sanded hybrid ball like RST is bloody crazy, really love it.
I sanded a crux prime to 3000 and polished it to where I could see my reflection. I had to throw it extreme right and it would hit the pocket well but after transition I couldn't throw it slow enough for it to turn into the pocket
Great stuff as always Guys!!! I'm lookin at a new Pearl now...I roll the ASYM Storm Dual lock and also a SYM iQ Tour Sapphire. Not sure what to go with, but looking at these 3 balls... I'm still Storm and Roto Jungo so be nice ;), but the GB ASYM looks to be a beast like the GB4 which I rock and then there is the new Joker Wild that looks sweet from the reactions I've seen...
I have an Axiom Pearl, left the box finish and it was one of the worst balls I've thrown. The reaction was terrible and I was going to get rid of it. I hit it with an 1800 pad and the ball came to life! Now I can't wait for the lanes to get to a point where I can use it.
Yesterday for practice I polished a solid asym Intimidator. It gave it a smooth controllable benchmark feel but I had to play farther right, around the 7 board and throw it very straight to get it to go through the pins properly. Didn't love it, but didn't hate it, might use it instead of my old blown out dead idol until the new one comes out. And in the past I've put a 2000 pad to a Halo Pearl and I had better luck with it that way. P.S. also polished my old dead pink idol then went over gently with a 3000 pad giving it a bit of sheen. Was hoping that would breathe some life back into it. Nope.
My mom bought a jackal legacy, she is 80+, much too strong of a ball for her,, had to take to 1k and polish which makes the ball roll out and allows her to control it. recently she bought a glove which allows her to get around the ball more so now i have to adjust layouts and see what surface will work best. She insists on Motiv but trying to convince her to get a purple hammer to have a better shape.
I took a Columbia 300 Tyrant Solid from box finish to 4000 grit and polished. I liked the change so much that I left it that way. I am a low speed, rev dominant two hander and out of the box it would hook at my feet. The surface change made it push easily through the fronts but still make a decisive move on the backend. Sadly it cracked on me after about a year of use.
Recently took the polish off my Zen. It was feeling a little jerky, a little hit or miss at the break point. Now it blends much better. Sorry if my wording isn't the correct vernacular!
The first reactive ball I ever had my Brunswick ultimate Inferno I polished that thing up through it at the same spot I usually do and that thing just never returned it kept going pretty much straight when I was meanin to hook it like a bat out of hell
I have an IQ Emerald. Do you think taking the polish off would give it a stronger and smoother motion on the House Shot? Instead of the box finish of 1500/Polish, what about 3000 dull or 2000 dull?
Nice video, i was preparing the same idea too, but bowling alleys are still closed here, so you beat me to it. Nice job though. I can't throw the ball as good as you guys LOL. Seemed a bit that when sanded the pearl hooked a little bit more, when the solid was polished. Both sanded were about 3 boards more hook, and both polished it was a bit less, like 1-2 boards?
This video is so much better of a description than BowlerX. e: maybe it is because the bowling lane is empty except for the few of you there, but those particular balls when you hit a strike make a really nice crash noise :D
I keep my Nuclear Cell sanded at 2000 instead of out of the box shiny. It just makes it pick up a couple of feet sooner like I need it to do and still ignores the front and middle of the lane.
That's exactly what I hit my Halo Pearl with to help control the over/under. It was a pinch too lengthy and snappy out of box and 2000 really helped blend out the reaction.
@@Mikey-1990 maybe I should try that with my halo pearl, I bowled 9 games with it and tossed it in the closet because all it did was over/under for me, the ball was trash and never though about changing the surface on it
