I'm going to echo the other comments. Wetherspoons is the pub you go to if you want to get half-way decent food and/or drink at a really low price. It is not where you go for really good food or really good drink.
Most pubs are run owned by brewers and will only sell their owner's beer (actually most pubs will also have one or two 'guest beers' also). Pubs that are not tied to a brewery are called 'free houses'. The free houses are usually small stand-alone businesses. Wetherspoon is unusual in that it is a chain of free houses.

Wetherspoons is above all “cheap & cheerful”, the tables can sometimes be a bit ‘sticky’ and the carpeting is bright & heavily patterned. Some of the actual buildings are quite beautiful & if Wetherspoons hadn’t repurposed them they would either have been left empty or perhaps demolished & repurposed. When we go there we almost always order using their online app - drinks will usually arrive at the table in 5 or 6 minutes & food is rarely longer than 8 or 10 minutes. They don’t offer fancy food, but there is a wide variety & it is of decent quality. If you do ever get across the pond, you should try and sample one - there’s bound to be one reasonably close in most parts of the country. PS/ The free refills of tea/coffee/hot chocolate are from self-service machines.

The interesting thing to me about Weatherspoons is the creative way that they name their pubs, usually with some local significance. For example in Oxford there is a pub called 'Four Candles' as it is near the school where Ronnie Barker (of Two Ronnies fame) was educated. Whenever I am in a strange town, I usually look for a 'Spoons' for lunch.

My local Spoons is a converted Church where I got married. Before it was a Spoons of course! The great benefit for real ale drinkers is that Wetherspoons has a fantastic variety of hand-pulled ales which change every week. So it's possible to try beers from small producers that you would never find in other pubs. And all at knock-down prices - the cheapest beer is £1.79 a pint with guest beers at £2.63. You'd pay at least £5 a pint for these in other pubs.

Commonly referred to as Spoons, they are by far the cheapest pubs in the UK, beer/ales can be between 60% and 30% cheaper than other pubs, lagers are typically 30% cheaper, (beer quality is good) spirits are usally cheaper if you buy a double/large, example: Whisky as a single shot/measure will be the same or slightly cheaper than others, but usally they offer the 2nd shot/measure for £1 (less than half the price of first shot) extra. Their food is not great, burgers are always burnt, (pre cooked that way for delivery) the best things to eat are there pizza and curry dishes in my opinion. Spoons are very popular because of price. Wetherspoons have their own app that's easy to use, it's very useful if the bar is busy, you can order/pay from your table, then it's brought over to you.

Pubs traditionally were often owned by Brewery companies, who would control numerous in an area, but often sold their drinks in other outlets & pubs, sometimes over a wider area, even countrywide in some cases. They are called 'Tied Houses' because they are dependent on a particular brewery. Other pubs are local & independent, taking their supplies of drink from various breweries. These are known as Free Houses. There are also some that have their own brewery, usually selling craft beers etc. Such pubs attached to Brewers are known as 'Brewery Taps'. Wetherspoons are a bit corporate, not quite like the traditional pub, but usable, & they have restored & retained many good buildings.

Had to go to the bar, food was poor - watery curry, one small poppadom and one naan bread the size of a crumpet. Drink expensive and service rubbish. Only went there as there wasn't a Spoons close. Won't make that mistake again!

Most pubs in the UK are run by a chain but those called a "Free House" are independently owned and run. The latter can sell what they like, including their own or artisan beers. The pub chains dictate what brands can be sold in their individual pubs. Many of the chains that own the pubs are the big breweries themselves.

  • @doodeedah6409

Yeah true, kinda funny that in the US, places for beers (i.e. bars) and for breakfast are mutually exclusive.
In Europe (even more so than in the UK), they’re usually the same place. Lots of bars open at 7-8am. You go there in the morning for coffee and breakfast before work, and go to the same bar in the evening for beers after work.
Specialised breakfast cafes do exist, but more the sort of place you go to sit down and treat yourself in the weekend.
For your day-to-day rush hour breakfast needs, you go to your local bar. Cheap and easy.
Well at least in spain. But pretty much in all of europe, most breakfast places serve alcohol.

You can get a nice latte and breakfast and evening meal at spoons. Just standard pub food. It is open for people to go for a few bevvys (alcoholic drinks) and food when you finish work at 5pm, put also open for you to go for a few bevvys and food if you finish work after night shifts in the morning, which many people take advantage of, one of my friends works nights and she goes there most mornings and has a few beers and then goes home to sleep, she meets the same people in there most mornings, she’s one of the faces. The last time I went to a weatherspoons was in Blackpool on a beach day out earlier this year. I can’t remember the last time I went to one of my local weatherspoons though. The one I pass a lot is always busy though.

I worked in a Spoons for a few years. They tend to be clean at 9am, but 11pm it probably won’t be. They do try to keep the beer fairly well, but you do get the exception. The food is basic and fast to serve. They have a card on the kitchen wall for each dish, which tells the “cook” what each item is cooked in and for how long, i.e grill for 1.5 minutes, microwave for 1 minute etc. and even how to plate it up. When I worked there, the aim was to get the food out within 15 minutes of ordering. Not sure if it still is.
We did have certain people that would barge in as you tried to unlocked the door at 9am, and some would stay for the majority of the day. Funny thing was that the 9am guys would be so desperate to get in, but have to wait at the bar while you finish hooking the doors back and stick out all the POS signs 😂

Wetherspoons vary greatly, depending where they are. They are in different buildings and usually given the names of local people who have sometimes being forgotten. My nearest in Shipley, West Yorkshire is a former Co-op furniture shop called the Sir Norman Rae. He was a Member of Parliament in the early 20th century and left a large piece of land to the town for public recreation. I usually go at lunchtime and there are just normal people out shopping and having a lunch. There was one old man who went there every day for some years, so when he died they put up a plaque in his memory, which I thought was very touching. Wetherspoons is OK if you're in a strange town and don't want to spend hours looking for somewhere to eat. I have never eaten at a Slug and Lettuce as the name puts me off. Maybe I should. I have never seen anyone drunk in a W. or come across a sticky carpet.

historically most pubs were owned by a specific brewery. the landlords were tenants. but more and more "freehouses" came about and have become the norm. Now we have a chain company that keeps prices down and does cool things like banning music so people can socialise. It was different when they first started popping up. they now have an app so you can order to your table, table service. And yes, its the mcdonalds of pubs, but its pretty good place to socialise with free coffee refills. its not a typical pub experience. some are better than others, but mostly down to the area/clientele that visit. they areusually well kept places, as good as a regular hotel lobby type of atmosphere.

Wetherspoons is the McDonalds of pubs in terms of its share of the market, and the mostly common interior furnishings (and yes, plates, amongst many other items), but it does not promote its own products, other than its' food menu - and even then, this often contains branded ingredients such as Cadbury's Flake... Likewise, it sells famous named brands of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks - as well as an ever-changing range of real ales and beers - all of which it is able to do cheaply owing to economies of scale, as there are currently 805 of them in 796 locations in the UK - including over 100 in London, alone! For comparison, there are 1,439 McDonald's in the UK in 1,221 locations, of which over 200 are in London - although these figures include locations such as retail parks and motorway service areas where pubs would not normally also be found...

Are other ones like there's one called Brewers Fayer I think its called, which was least owned by Whitbreads, though I don't know with minors in Wetherspoons, I dont think they're allowed in there, but at Brewers Fayer they are (like will be something about them not being allowed at the bar or which ever).
In Harrogate is one (the first place to use gas street lights in the country as well) in what was formerly the Winter Gardens and did it kind of completely up compared to how it was, though a lot of its dead tatty now when you look at the corners at the edges lol (way for kind of people to visit a garden indoors etc).
Sometimes in a Wetherspoonds (depending on the look of the place) will have old artworks on the walls, like is a portrait of the 1st Mayor of the Ripon City Council, ordered as such by James VI in Scotland and by then by about a year I in England, when he ordered the formation of the council and gave a proper charter to Ripon (3rd smallest city in the country, though when excluding Wales is it becomes the 2nd smallest after the City of London.

You just walk into Wetherspoons find a table look at the menu then you can either order from the app or go to the bar and order but make sure you remember your table number as the barman or barmaid will ask you for it or you put it into the app. The food is very nice. Wetherspoons serves breakfast. I have never had wrong food put in front of me. There are other chains like Greene King which is similar to a Wetherspoons there are differences which you will see when visiting them.

There is a Wetherspoons near me called the Coronation Hall (or Corrie Hall to regulars) that used to be the local synagog. It even has its original, beautiful stained glass Star of David on the front. So repurposing buildings is totally a thing.

Wetherspoons is pretty much the basic pub chain of the UK. During the day they are normal pubs with passable food and drink. At nights (during the weekends) they turn into a night club which is one of my particular takes on hell.

The chain made a lot of money at one time by buying csk and guest beers coming close to their use by date for a lower price then selling the Beer before it went off. they were also a place to get "Guest beers" and real ale as a consequence of this. In general you can recognise a Weatherspoons by the branding and signage, a lot will have nams of famous people like "The last Plantagenate", The Reginald Mitchell" etc. A similar pub chain that went under was the Firkin chain which included the Font and Firkin in Brighton which was a converted chapel.
The Pub system in the UK runs in a particular way, there are chain pubs where the owner runs branhes like a franchaise, or directly, There are chains of pubs which are run by a Brewery which get their beer from that brewery, there are smaller places that get beer in from brewery's independently, there are some with one breweryor are attatched to a brewery.

As well as occupying old banks, cinemas etc, most Wetherspoons are named after famous local figures eg our local one is named after an opera singer from the town. And each branch has an individual style and its own unique carpet.
The guy in the video is a Londonderry. Doom Bar is a much loved beer.
You can now order food and drink at your table via an app.
My favourite meal is the southern fried chicken with Jack Daniels bbq sauce. Yummy!
Wetherspoons is very family orientated. All the TVs are muted and there's no music.
All pubs in the UK serve beer, wine, spirits and soft drinks.

The beer can be 2 quid, or more a pint cheaper for the same branded beers sold in other pubs. The food gets slagged off, but it's pretty good (a 'spoons burger is better than a Maccies). I wouldn't bother asking for the usual, as I use the app and get table service. No, they're not dirty in my experience. You can get a burger, chips and a pint for about £9. Lots of old people meet for breakfast. They open at 8, but most won't serve alcohol until 10am. If your order is wrong e.g. I got a veggie breakfast, but there was only one fried egg (there should be 2). I called one of the staff and they brought me two more. At our local, between 5-7pm, that's when there's most kids in with their parent, for food.

My own local (not a 'Spoons) normally has my regular being pulled the moment I walk through the door. That's what being a regular is like in Britain. Back to 'Spoons - £1.99 for a pint that would be £5 or more anywhere else..

Wetherspoons is great. The food is fine, The fish and chips are better than most fish and chip shops and you get a beer with it. Pensioners can afford to get out and socialise in a place where they are welcome for a change. Students can leave their grimy rooms and meet their friends in an affordable place. The beer is fine and its served by pefectly competant friendly staff . The guy making this vidio is just showing off to his mates ,IThank you Tyler for looking into it more closely and not just taking this pretend Cocknies word for it. There are various types of pubs all across the UK.
There's such as Wetherspoons which is a chain pub you most often get located on a town and city high streets where people tend to meet friends and is often used as a meeting point. It's more noisy with lots of people talking, music pumping out, people eating a cheap fish and chips etc.
Then on the other end of the spectrum you have what I'm more used to, the village pub. A lot quieter, with a lot less people. Mainly used by the people who live in the village itself. They're more cosy and old world. A place to go into for a quiet pint and warm up next to a fire on a cold day. You might take your dog for a walk between your village and the next village and on the way home stop in the village pub for a pint of beer. That's a popular thing for people to do in the villages close to where I live. People might go to the village pub for a higher quality meal like pub close to where I live does a fantastic homemade steak pie. They cut all their own chips, there's no buying them frozen in a bag. The mushy peas have never seen a can. The chef uses normal peas and mashes them and adds such as mint to his own recipe.
But then there's several other different types of pubs in-between.

But they weren't keeping control of them and they were loud and annoying. 2-3 of us spoke to staff but the manager refused to eject them. I now go to the Slug and Lettuce further down the high street. Another chain pub but better food, nice but quieter atmosphere and they have a 2 for 1 cocktails menu which i indulge in once a week. I’m not a big drinker of alcohol but I do enjoy their food.
It’s probably not going to be considered the highest of quality to a lot of people but it’s (usually) hot, tasty and reasonably priced. They will usually sell it as part of a deal with a drink alcoholic / non alcoholic.
One big benefit to me is that you can walk into any Wetherspoon pub and know, more or less, exactly what to expect.
In ‘Spoons today I had their Chicken Jalfrezi with popadoms, a Garlic naan and a pint of Pepsi Max Cherry for £10.51 ($13.43), that price includes taxes as per usual.

They certainly aren't clean & sparkly and the two I've been to smelt rather nasty. But yeah, the cheapest pubs around - which attracts a lot of young binge drinkers etc. The food is cheap as - but processed & frozen.

There are about 900 Spoons around the country.
They are great for standardised cheap food and drink - but certainly not a quality gastronomic experience.
Because of the size and city centre locations of the establishments you are less likely to be recognised as a regular who can just waltz in and ask for their 'usual' than you would be in a proper local pub.
'Do they have a problem with people who never leave?' Unlike US establishments, they expect you to be settle in for the evening, not rushed through a meal so the table can be realocated.

Not all Wetherspoons open as late as 9 O'clock in the morning. Found one in a small town in Lincolnshire that opened at 7 in the morning for breakfasts. Think they only started selling beer etc......a little later? Their usual beers are mostly the poor quality, popular chemical lagers but they do occasionally have decent guest ales at very good prices. Trouble is, they're usually close to their "sell by date", which is why they're cheap..

if anyone is like Tyler and doesn’t know how beer can be bad it’s mainly an issue with draft beer because you need to store and pour pints of draft beers the correct way for the beer to be served as intended, it’s not as much of an issue with bottles or cans so I would suggest getting a bottled beer over a Guinness if you are doubting the establishments quality, also sure everyone knows this but spoons has an app you can order to your table via that
