They are launched in the higher atmosphere to evade radars, then eventually made to re-enter the lower atmosphere using gravity to attain such high speeds which cannot be intercepted by regular anti misslie systems.

After they returned to their masters-Lord stopped the battle and gave narayanastra to Athikaya as boon.The idea was to exhaust the pashupathra usage which is once so he can be killed during the ramayana days.Narayana astra has no effect on avtars of lord Vishnu.Athikaya was killed in the war. 2.Narayana astra was used by Karthikeya against shanghachooda (rebirth of sudhama due to curse by radha) he countered it.Kali sent in the bhramastra and he countered that also.
