I play guitar and what hes doing is using a string that you could say looks like a rubber band but is hooked up to sound like a bass guitar its not neccesary but it looks cool
those are called tape wound strings they have a plastic coat and hella low tension tehy are also easier on basses as apposed to metal strings, but that really only matters on a fretless. a lot of consistent players choose them because they are easier on the fingers depending.
