I want someone to actually run numbers and see what percentage of traffic is caused by pedestrians, taxi’s, emergency vehicles, etc. It would be very interesting and perhaps such a study could help relieve traffic and plan better street layouts.

Yup they're very busy intersections and are often congested with both traffic and pedestrians so the NYPD stage traffic agents at them to help clear traffic.
