A2RL Explained - Extreme Engineering On Track

- We've seen autonomous racing try to take off before, but A2RL, the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League, is set to push the boundaries of what autonomous racing really can be. We sent Alex Goy over to Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina to find out what clever tech powers the cars, how they manage to compete in various challengers without a driver (including overtaking, fastest lap and even a man vs machine challenge), and why A2RL is relevant to today's society.

Remember folks, do not anthropomorphize robots.
Pleasantly surprised to see & hear Alex Goy here.
Its a shame Roborace seems to have stopped. Because that series was this and had two seasons which were pretty interesting. They were working towards having multiple cars on track, i think more than 4 though........ They also used a prototype chassis not open wheel. Be interested to see if any of the universities from Roborace move into this.
Just the video I needed great job covering this new series.
Sounds very interesting overall and being an IT person myself this is something i'd definitely watch.
Now that we don't have a human driver, i wish we see faster cars (more than 300 kph) and different track configuration that can check the limits of the aerodynamics and engineering of the cars. Thats promising!
As a formula 1 fan this seems entertaining in a completely different way, in F1 it’s all about drivers and performance which I love, and A2RL focuses way more on the engineers perspective, it would be more interesting to see how much they improve between races rather than just watch the races alone
I wish to watch an F1 race where all the current cars are driven by the same programmed controllers, and see the actual cars capabilities and performance.
In simple way, put Hamilton or Max in all cars at the same time😂.
@@mustafaal-barghouthi4981 that would be interesting bc then we could see if alpine cars are bad or it's the drivers (it's probably both)

Gran turismo's " Sophie ' should be implemented at some piont
Lovely to see Alex Goy presenting here in his usual brilliant way!
Who knew R/C cars would come to this? Fine for research but who would ever want to watch all those Robbie the Robots connecting the dots. And for the consumer, a little radar, a little assistance is fine for those who want to pay the extra bucks for it, but lots of us don't want that, just give us a manual transmission and roll-up windows and don't bother with the console TV in the middle of the dash. And, okay, some chrome and color and a body by Pininfarina, too. 😀
I want both. I want full autonomy for my daily commute so I can doomscroll youtube in traffic, and I want a manual v8 with roll up windows for the weekend.
This is a really cool idea! Less worry about driver safety and more room for innovation and speed!
Jarno Opmeer cooking maybe?
So is it possible to now go crazy and link the autonomous car to a simrig in the pitbox?
IrlRacing?
Awesome concept to educate people on the advancement of ai in autonomous mobility.
Awesome, 4/27/24 Missouri Go team Lawrence
The question still remains.... What happens when two computers play each other in chess?
Why are you making this 15 minute corporate advertisement seem like a real video? 🤦♂️
Nailed it.
Astonishing and very interesting, one question though, you mentioned the people involbed including engineers, but… No mechanics? Whi changes tyres, refuel, put together, etc?
I can't imagine that there are any significant number of people enough invested in the superiority of one software package over another to generate revenue for the endeavour.
You're totally missing the point.
They aren't trying to create a spectator sport.
Their aim is much bigger than that.
They are trying to advance autonomous driving tech for use in road vehicles.
Competition (and wars) bring rapid development.
@@procatprocat9647 Even if there was any road relevance in this, and there is not, where's the revenue coming from? Who is paying for software package A and software package B to burn fuel, and the people wrenching the cars, the track, and the paid media?
@proesterchen the clue is in the name.
They are trying desperately to reinvent themselves in all sorts of different ways. Once the oil stops flowing, the whole country is screwed if they can't find replacement GDP.
No road relevance to autonomous vehicle technology? Are you for real? You must have been living under a rock for the past 30 years if you don't even know that!
They can't make autonomous driver aids any worse than they already are. Ford's anti collision aids in their cars has caused 2 accidents I know of, and my brother in law had to get someone to remove it from his car as it almost made him swerve into oncoming traffic a few times rolling up to a bus stopped on the road dropping someone off
i have no issue with this...ai will never replace drivers, they will just add maybe a new category
Stick it in a Red Bull and see if it can beat Max😀
And after roborace failed, how will this seal a different fate
I watched the first AI car get overtaken by a 2nd hand F1 Driver in the same racing chassis and thought ..... "Well I'm ashamed to be a racing fan right now!" and turned the rubbish off straight away! I'll never get that 2min back in my life!
The whole fun of the sport is to see the drivers show off their skills and endurance and not this scam.
that was my first thought too, but i realized something... its not going to replace drivers, its new way of researching new tehnology, look at it that way, as fight of engineers toward a common goal , in a fun way..
@@nopetarpan if you think of it like an engineer's playground I guess it makes sense

I really don’t know if I absolutely hate this or not, but leaning towards this just all bad.
Hmmmm
Interesting.
would sooner watch paint dry or grass grow.
I'm saying for YEARS I want a crazy race league with AI only and cars going 500km/h, 10G and even loopings. Just thing way to dangerous for humans.
roborace tried to do that on 2015
www.youtube.com/@Roborace/videos
And what happened to it ?
She?
Surely the AI should choose their own pronouns 😂
Can we may make journalist autonomous before we get rid of race card drivers?
Did you not watch the video? He said he doesn’t want drivers to disappear lmao, you can have 2 different motorsports at the same time
Don’t see the point of this at all. Motorsport is about driving skill.
If diversity must be pronounced, therefore isn't natural at all.
Governments will demand this.
Take away the human factor will take away my interest.
It is about human pushing the machine to the max.
Losing interest in modern cars already.
Guess it’s interesting for these tech people. Doubt people would embrace this as real racing.
This is a technological innovation platform for autonomous Road cars.
Competition and wars are great drivers for innovation.
They aren't trying to replace drivered racing !
I’m not the greatest lover of E Sports, however I’d much rather watch E Sports where a human is actually controlling the car than driver less cars racing. What a pointless waste of resources an energy and hopefully it dies out relatively quickly.
You've totally missed the point, as so many others have.
This a technology competition with the aim of rapidly accelerating the current state of the art.
Can’t wait for one of the cars to disconnect and go into Turn 1 like an Forza lobby 😂
Didn’t they test a car that went straight into a wall?
Trying to advance road cars by being yet another race car! 🤦🏻♂️
Everything your car has comes from racing.
So yes, this type of thing will help road cars. The technology will trickle down to road cars.
@@C41N4 no road car will ever have giant front wings and slick tyres.
@@eleycki ABS, dual clutch transmission, direct fuel injection, disk brakes, electronic suspension control, active suspension, hell, even steering wheel itself came from Motorsport.
You should do your research before commenting something so incorrect.
@@C41N4 you are missing the point entirely. I know all of what you are saying already, but they have said they want this to be road relevant, and yet their platform mimics and open-wheel race series car. What not have an autonomous race series car that has the road car platform. Why doesn’t it have abs and active ride etc etc, rather than formula regulated open wheels, double wishbone suspension and massive wings. It could do more if it was on a cool road car platform than this.
@@C41N4 also: disc brakes were designed originally for road cars and then motorbikes way before specific motorsport. Maybe you need to do some fact checking before commenting in such an arrogant way?
Note,...... virtually NO decent clips of a car much less multiple cars running on track together.
I was a little surprised by that too. And minimal mention of the tech on the non automotive side of things. Yes we get it has radar/lidar/cameras but then what? Is the hardware standard or unique to each team?
Lol what a scam. A glorified wind tunnel with spectators
