My mother was abused by her stepfather for years, her mother knew but didn't care. Basically she told my mom to shut up and take it 😥. She chose him over her own daughter. My mother eventually tried to kill him by putting rat poison in his coffee. It didn't do anything. Eventually she got out by marrying my father. Sadly my mother has passed. Thankfully her mother and stepfather are also gone and the old house was torn down.
The song is based on what one Steven Tyler's girlfriends told him. Steven's girlfriend told him, that her dad molested her, and she said if she had a gun, she would've shot her dad. So Aerosmith released this song to bring awareness to the subject.
If you are thinking child 'abuse' and no one believing when told... then you have it correct. This has always been a decisive song. Especially amongst abused people.
The part where she's shivering and crying at the end before being wrapped in the blanket and tenderly led away by the detective ... man! That part always gets me. It was a taboo subject. If a child said anything, the adults would just say "stay away from him." "Him" being the abuser and the main provider for the family. My mom worked part time in the evenings. I told when I was 4 years old. Her solution was to quit her job and start a home based business. I never bothered to tell again. I stayed in school, learned office skills, graduated high school in 1980 and moved out less than a month later. It took almost two decades to shake off the dirty feeling, codependency behaviors, and victim mentality. In my day, foster care would have been even worse than what I lived with at home. The laws were worthless until "Janies" started killing their parents and abused wives started burning beds. It may not have been the right means to an end, but desperate people will do desperate things.
Not a court in this country would have convicted Janie. He got what he deserved. The mom is played by Leslie Ann Warren who is best known (to me) for her role in CLUE as Ms. Scarlet.
I remember her as Cinderella in the 1965 TV movie musical. She was 19 then! Stuart Damon (Dr. Alan Quartermaine on General Hospital) was Prince Charming.

She was also Cinderella in the 1965 musical on TV. I have the DVD. She was 19. Prince Charming was Stuart Damon, who played Alan Quartermaine for many years on General Hospital.
"The singer declared that "I got really angry that nobody was paying homage to those who were abused by Mom and Dad".[9] The line "He jacked a little bitty baby" was originally "He raped a little bitty baby," but was changed for commercial purposes. Tyler often sings the original line when performing live." Speak out on the touchy subjects. Children need to come first and be protected. The more we not talk about it, the less it is addressed. janies then add the word fund, put a period and then the word org (sorry, it's youtube) This video also address something that happens - mom knows and doesn't do anything.
One of my friends in HS that had a big lawyer dad and mom was an anesthesiologist. Big house and she drove an awesome BMW convertible (and this was in South Florida Ft. Lauderdale area). Her parents lived on the intercoastal and there were lots of parties with little supervision. I stayed there often since my single mom was working a lot. Many envied her life and thought she had it all. Some thought she was mean....but nobody knew the cost of that life that she had to pay..her mom worked often and dad was molesting her while mom willfully ignored. A year after graduation..she went home for break and hung herself on winter break. I still miss her and wish things could have been different. Nobody believed a pot smoking kid from the wrong side of the tracks vs. A "philanthropic" lawyer that gives free legal clinics???

Goths at school would resent her and throw trash saying she "has it made" or girls with many talents but may have one parent and dreams of living a sweet life. I became so appreciative to my mom, we may not have had much..but she loved me. No you will not lose anyone Leo..sexual abuse from a father is the most hideous crime I can think of. Bringing it into the light on behalf of the victims is the right thing to do.....Aerosmith did the right thing by writing this and you did the right thing by reviewing this..Judy D
Perfectly said.
THIS!
Steven Tyler also just opened 2 Janie House's. So he not only raises funds to support. He providing shelters!!!
The black keys Lonely boy...the video is amazing..will get u grooving
I worked in a group home when this song came out, yes it is about incest. The girls would blast this on the radio. part of healing is anger.
♥♥♥ Aerosmith: Laying sh*t bare since 1970.
I love this era of Aerosmith. Their huge comeback decade.
Absolutely. The 90's were huge for them.
Powerful song, not a pretty subject, one we shouldn't ignore. Steven Tyler does a lot of work in this cause. Enjoy
Thank you, Mr Video. Let me tell you something...I have a lot of "bad days". You make a difference because you make me laugh and smile. Thanks.
She played Janet in The Rocky Horror Picture Show!
@@moniqueleroux2198 the movie was Susan Sarandon....did you mean the stage show?
I will never get tired of watching CLUE. It just never gets old.
I thought that looked like Ms. Scarlet!
Leo, your instincts about song meanings are always dead-on or close but I feel your reluctance to just it put it out there cuz them trolls be thick out here, even when you’re correct.
Keep up the great reactions 🤙🏼🙂
😉😎👌😁😱 I said it for him 😉😎👌😁😱
@@gregwilliams9737 Yes!!! Speak on it Greg🤣🙌🏼
@@nanip2029 thanks Nani, I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes with what i say, but sometimes, something has to be said, at least to me & I'm not afraid to say anything 😂🤣😂🤣😱😉😎👌😁
Living on the Edge
Great song by Aerosmith
David Fincher did this video before he did “fight club” and “se7en”. The guy is a genius.
1989 MTV video of the year. That album was massive.
This song is about Jani shooting her dad bc he messed with her in the worst way possible. "They say when Jani got arrested they found the body underneath the train" not the trailer lol. He tells the story right out of the gate. Love you Leo.
This song turned out to be so more than intended...kids started writing in on the abuses they suffered as kids past and present..Steven Tyler opened up home for girls running from same situations
You said at the beginning of the video "Janie's Got a Gun, that's not the way to solve a problem." In her case, it was the only way to solve the problem. 💘 On a different topic, I'll bet you didn't realize how many issues were addressed in rock songs 😀
One of Aerosmiths most awesome songs ever
This song gets me every time. 😢
I have listened to this song for years, I love that Aerosmith included a few important words that set this in motion. Nobody would listen or believe her.
Fun fact - Leslie Ann Warren plays the mom. If you don't know who she is, she played Miss Scarlet in Clue with Tim Curry. It is definitely a must watch classic comedy!
She was also Cinderella in the 1965 musical on TV. I have the DVD. She was 19. Prince Charming was Stuart Damon, who played Alan Quartermaine for many years on General Hospital.
@@chercee I used to watch that all the time when I was little ❤️
@@hilarywilkes7853 My sisters and I did, too! My brothers, on the other hand, weren't interested! 😂😂
What it Takes, cryin, amazing, love in an elevator, sweet emotions, theres so many good songs.. Epic Band.. one on my favorites
The more we not talk about it, the less it is addressed. janies then add the word fund, put a period and then the word org (sorry, it's youtube)
This video also address something that happens - mom knows and doesn't do anything.
You're 100% right. That's why she's got a gun.
You're also 100% right. He deserved it.
Group hug everyone. 💜
The song won the band a 1990 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
An underrated but great Aerosmith song is "Pink". It's upbeat and fun.
Aerosmith go back to the 70's for me. Excellent song.
Best American rock band ever.
Isn't it always the way
I think it's worse when they are educated and well off where life is so beautiful presented
Evil never see the beauty of life
I'm so sorry you saw this in your life coz it effects you just as much
Australia 💕 Christina
She could've gone real far with educated well earning parents..but her life was such a tragedy. Goths at school would resent her and throw trash saying she "has it made" or girls with many talents but may have one parent and dreams of living a sweet life. I became so appreciative to my mom, we may not have had much..but she loved me. This friend would opt out of beachside bliss to come over to my dump just to watch blockbuster because my mom had a night off and would sit and just BE there with us and for us. I just wish that detective I told would have listened. I sent him a nasty letter after she passed.
@@gingersoja4284
I meant her parents being educated and well off
I always say to people who wants a mansion with soooo many rooms when there isn't one person who really loves you
Ginger you gave her one piece of real love in her life she carried in her heart
You are a good person
@@christinalikoski4937 thank you so much. Well stated. That is so true.
He definitely had it coming.
This song has always been in my Aerosmith favorites top 5
Janie is speaking for all abuse victims who fight back. Kudos for Aerosmith for tackling this subject. Great reaction xxxx
Honestly one of their best songs
This song is ICONIC!! Been awhile since I heard it so glad I stumbled across this.
When entertainment bites and spits out reality...
Everything you were thinking is 100% right. Love this song, love Aerosmith
I absolutely love this makes me cry and rock out same time 🏴🏴🏴🏴
This ...leaves everyone speechless. Your reaction couldn't have been any better Leo. 💜
I listened to this song. Sang the melody, but never listened to the words. I never knew sister. I’m saddened. We just kinda rocked out to music. I’ve learned so much the last few days. Hugs and ❤️ to you.
Dropping hits all day!!!
This is probably my favorite Aerosmith song of their later years. Great reaction to a great song! ~Be Blessed
“Hole in my Soul” and “What it takes.” Both Aerosmith Mr. V- pleeeease- big HITS of theirs and often overlooked- myself and others in comments were discussing this- would love to see you react- 🤞🏼🤞🏼💙✌️
😂🤣😂🤣😉😎👌😱 you're definitely gonna need some puff puff on this one Leo 😉😎👌😁 puff puff on Leo
A melodic version of Daddy touched, Nobody believed her, Daughter shot.
I don’t see how it’s controversial. He deserved it 100%. Even a gun hater should know that. And you should always be true to yourself and speak your truth.
Try "I don't want to miss a thing". Or if you want something fun: "When the lightning strikes". It's more obscure but it's fun and makes a point. Rocks is a great album but not so well known.
He's done i don't want to miss a thing
One of the few Aerosmith songs that I really love ✌
Hole in my Soul is a highly underrated Aerosmith song. Check that one out
Yessss! I’ve BEGGED for “Hole in my Soul” everywhere!! Also “What it takes.”
@@kimberlinibambini1988 I haven't seen the video in, hell, probably 20 years but I still remember it. And I can't believe i forgot about What it Takes. Damn good times.
@@areaju5t1n14 yessss! Agreed!
Aerosmith the number 1 American band in the history of music...
When are you going to do Buffalo Stance-Neneh Cherry?
Great Question 👌
And maybe her brother Eagle Eye Cherry´s hit song - Save tonight.. Talented family:)
You haven't lost a thing. We will always help you out. Speak your mind, that's what we are here for.
Damn, brother, between this and "Jeremy" you've been taking some pretty heavy hits here. Might be time for a little Bobby McFerrin or some such (Don't Worry, Be Happy)
Amazing by them should be your next reaction you'll not be disappointed
I'm still pushing for Sqeeze Box by The Who cause it's a happy song!😃
YES!
🤣That song is barely hiding what it is about 🤣
Yesssss! 😆😅
He would get a kick out of that one
And I hope he watches the video with the belly dancing in it, just for fun!!
Another deep song that was banned by MTV for being too graphic but it was really needed because it was about domestic violence song by Mötley Crüe called you’re all I need
Yep! You're 100% right. Her daddy was doing some nasty things to Janie so she had to get a gun. Daddy ain't nasty no more. Lol.
This song holds up still on all levels..subject, musically and vocally...an amazing song
Songs like this and Pat Benatar's Hell is for Children help to bring such things out into the open. The youth would talk about what our parents kept hidden.
Class act they are and not afraid to write about taboo subjects, Steve and the band always push envelopes. Go down that rabbit hole and they never disappoint.
Unfortunately I understand Janie too well 😥. Kudos to Aerosmith to bringing this message to light back then it made a lot of folks feel they weren’t alone
From what I understand, Steven Tyler even started a foundation and shelter for women and girls trying to escape abuse, "Janie's House".
I'm so sorry to hear
Aerosmith - Living on the Edge
I HATE HIM! for WHAT MY STEP DAD did TO ME!!🔥🔥 What Is HAPPENING HERE!! IS GOD trying to Tell ME Something AGIAN!!! To Face My pasted..?YOUR ANGEL With A BROKEN WING !!🦅💋❤️🔥💋❤️🔥☀️🌔🌌
I'm gonna give you a sub just cause you thought you might lose some. This is what the people want
He's opened 2 houses called Janies house, for abused women and children
The worst thing anyone could do is ignore the problem. Ignoring doesn't make it go away.
This is a subject people are still avoiding today. We will talk about robbery, murder, even rape. No one wants to when the rapist is the victim's father. Props to Aerosmith.
Try livin on the edge by aerosmith thats a song that was very representative of last year plus a great video
She said nobody would believe me! The man was such a sleeze. He ain't never gonna be the same.
All these years I thought they were sayin Jamie’s got a gun, not Janie 🤣🤣🤣
me too lol
Jamie is crying, Janie got the gun. ;)
It's actually a pretty common mistake for people to think that they're saying "Jamie's Got A Gun" instead of "Janie's Got A Gun"
Same
I TOTALLY agree with you. He DEFINITELY deserved it. And more
This is classic, LOVE Steven Tyler's voice!!!
Hunger strike definitely! R.I.P Andy Wood. The entire CD is a tribute to him. It was incredible and (R.I.P) Chris Cornell including Eddie Vedder was perfect.
Darling Nikki. My all time favorite Prince song!
Yes
I've watched this three times cause of your comments at the end, and me saying uh huh, yup, right along with what you're saying. I can feel empathy from you when you get speechless. Thank you for doing this song. ❤️
If you'd like a video with a lighter subject, try J Geils Band "Centerfold." No violence, I swear.
Great Reaction Mr. Video. It’s about exactly what you think it is. I remember when I first heard this song my respect for Aerosmith grew tenfold. I love how they took a hard subject and made it into an empowering song. It also makes people think.😀👍❤️✌️🌼
The song is about a domestic violence sexual assault victim killing her abusive father...
Listen to "Until it Happens to You" by Lady Gaga
You'll really dig Aerosmiths "Love in an Elevator"
