    I got the same issues for my second trip out fishing on my Vanford 5000. Handle locked up same as the video. Very smooth reeling with no fish or lure on the line. When there is any load on the reel, the reel becomes noisy and noticeably less smooth and you can feel all the gears. Def does not feel right. Returning the reel as I am writing this.

  • @SCHan247

    I have a Vanford 5k and it only had issues once I dunked the reel. So instead of sending it in, I opened it up and found no salt in the reel. I couldn't find a thing wrong with the reel besides the most obvious when I stepped back. There was barely any grease! I cleaned and re-greased (properly, not packed) and haven't had a problem since. And I dunked it at least 3 more times after that. I think some of them didn't get enough grease from the factory. I also only use that reel for striped bass and regularly catch 2-15lb fish by the dozen every trip.

    I have a vanford 4000, after 2 beach trips. It became very very hard to reeling. I think maybe some inside of the parts were corrosion… finally I used very very large power to have it back to normal work…

  • @Peter-cj2ml
    @Peter-cj2ml 2 года назад +2

    I believe micro gears are simply to small, more a gimmick from Shimano, should be more stout, if reel flexed gears might come out of alignment , just my opinion. I do own a Vanford 2000 but use it for trout and very light lures, enjoy it very much.

    • @koastal312
      @koastal312 2 года назад

      the micro gears in a shimano spinning reel are nowhere as fine as the ones in their baitcasters but you're right if the body flexes it could wear down the gears much faster which is why the stradic FL should be a better choice.

    Its a freshwater reel using it in the Surf can cause it but not necessarily the problem try tightens the retainer nut under spool and make it a habit after you used a freshwater reel in the salt rinse and then spray alot of WD-40 to remove any water remaining

    That reel is not submersible so if that happened you likely had saltwater corrosion that clobbered it. I have the 2500 series and found that I can submerge for about 2 seconds and be ok. My son submerged one for a longer time and it had problems.

A basic that works well giving you cold forge hagane gears and protection and for around $100 bucks the NASCI. It's so hard to find the right balances of weight & number of bearings with reels anymore. You either get a nice light weight reel with a low number of bears that can't handle getting wet; or you end up a bunch of ball bearings which makes it a heavy reel with decently sealed bearings. There's not a in between anymore.

      Its actually not a freshwater reel. Its rated to have double sealed corrosion resistant ball bearings and seals. Including the double rubber seals to prevent sand and debris.

    Sucks about the reel bit it looked like it was corroded a bit and you forcing it freed it up. Did you take it apart to look inside, salt build up? Nice fish looked like a good day!😁👍👍🐟

    I’m not too impressed with the new Vanford’s finish on the spool. The red coloring comes off too easily. I’ve never dropped any of my Vanford and I have braid on all of them.

    Not the best reel to use in those conditions. They are built as a finesse reel, fresh - inshore… not heavy duty surf application like you have it for.

    Is your vanford the salt model? If not it will not hold up, and bearings got salt in it , one drop in the salt will do it... vanford in the fresh water, non better

      This is literally Shimano's Marketing:
      X-PROTECT
      By combining water repellent coating and specially designed, water channeling, labyrinth construction, X Protect provides high-level water resistance without sacrificing light gear and rotor rotation.
      X-SHIELD
      X-Shield & X-Protect combine to provide extreme water resistance in the harshest conditions.
      Waterproof Drag
      With the use of rubber gaskets the drag is sealed against intrusion of the elements such as water and dust.
