I always thought it was a mother/teenage daughter relationship…he’s right it’s not that complicated if you automatically assume it’s about two lovers but nothing in the song or original video says that it is. It could be a family relationship, or two friends or even just her talking to an alter ego of herself. It doesn’t HAVE to be about a boy.
