This song was a turning point for me. Divorce came as such a surprise for me at 24 after I though I had my life prescribed for me. It was, in hindsight, the opening of a door for better things to come. Ben wrote the most accurate representation of where I was and, eventually, how fucking unpredictably races forward for me. Thanks for this ya'll.
@WilliamAppel3 thanks for asking. Luckily, things are going much better. It was definitely a rough patch but we've pulled through and it's better than ever. I've been in therapy since then and she's started as well. We've been working towards bettering ourselves and having fun together again and it's been great. Seeing this was surprising because I had forgotten how bad I was feeling just 10 months ago. Thanks again for asking.
I've watched this like 20 times now. I love the line "and now he lives inside someone he does not recognize when he catches his reflection on accident"
QueenOfAmber I remember when these videos were first released and seeing them soon after on the Narrow Stairs tour. So glad I got to see them before Chris left.
Brilliant band, awesome tune, and album. 😊❤️🎶🎼”On the back of a motorbike with arms outstretched trying to take flight, leaving everything behind “ Simply beautiful!
"No longer easy on the eyes, but these wrinkles masterfully disguise, the youthful boy below." When you're young, you think everything that everyone who has been there says is wrong. And boy were YOU wrong.
They, as a whole, are just so true to themselves as musicians and people and the music they produce is just so honest and simplistically beautiful. By far one of my favorite bands
i'm glad that finally a band with talent actually gets recognition. bands like jonas brothers and other disney channel crap and rap dont deserve the popularity they get, they dont write their own music and probably cant even read it. bands like brand new, circa survive, death cab, etc. deserve way more recognition then they get bc of how their music and lyrics are just so amazing.
1) I miss Chris being in the band. 2) This is probably every fans favorite Death Cab song and they probably don't even realize it. 3) Why do we tend to care more about what once was, or what could have been, compared to how things really are now?
1. I think most do 2. yes i agree, it's mine... 3. it's a gift and a curse, but it's human nature. life is never a slow steady climb to better and better things, there are ebbs and flows, hills and valleys, good times and bad. It's just human nature to regret, wonder, and relive memory as a tool to get back to those hills either physically or emotionally.
"And I have learned that even landlocked lovers yearn for the sea like navy men Cause now we say goodnight from our own separate sides Like brothers on a hotel bed" i love this so much. the lyrics are so genius
Ben Gibbard is one of the most beautiful singers ive ever heard. Its like. Him and Ewan Mcreggor from Moulin Rouge. pretty much if they did a duet i would shit 9 babies
death cab is definitely one of those bands that i feel just improve, yet maintain their integrity. they are one of the best bands out there, and i dont care if people disagree, its my opinion. their lyrics are fantastic. they will always be on my top bands.
i read a comment about a guy noting that this drummer just puts little things in there to make the song. i totally agree thats how ive thought of him since ive started listening to them. thats what their whole band is about. there are so many songs where they have some ambient noises constantly ringing in the background and it gives the songs so much more depth. incredible.
This song describes exactly how some relationships change with time... It makes such a sad experience feel a little better. Thank you for posting this. It means a lot.
I've jsut started listening to these guys. I got a laptop that had aaaaall their albums except for the Open Door EP, which I promptly bought. They make the best music ever. Master songwriters, all around. Let's all just love them. They're still the same dudes who made the Photo Album. Some just have beards now.
There isn't many bands that can do what DCFC does. Their music is so much more powerful than notes and noises. Their music moves people. Not many bands do that.
This is my favorite death cab for cutie song. I can listen to this no matter what my mood. When I listen to this song and i'm feeling upset it helps me get over it almost instantly. These guys are too good for their own good :)
You may tire of me as our December sun is setting 'cause I'm not who I used to be No longer easy on the eyes but these wrinkles masterfully disguise the youthful boy below Who turned your way and saw something he was not looking for Both a beginning and an end But now he lives inside someone he does not recognize when he catches his reflection on accident On the back of a motorbike with your arms outstretched trying to take flight, leaving everything behind But even at our swiftest speed we couldn't break from the concrete in the city where we still reside And I have learned that even landlocked lovers yearn for the sea, like navy men, 'Cause now we say goodnight from our own separate sides like brothers on a hotel bed
I love Death Cab, and when I discovered Vlogbrothers last year and decided to start catching up on their old videos, was surprised and excited to hear this.
My favorite song from Plans. I love the high hat part and the lyrics, which to me are about regret and memories of better times, near the end of a long relationship. Profound and moving. Great band, but not for everybody. They appeal to passionate and deep thinking music lovers.
agree that the whole band is really talented. don't forget that ben can also play drums! watch clips of live postal service performances or the break near the end of 'we looked like giants'. he and jason have great percussive chemistry together.
I'm 50 years old and have been married for almost 22 years...this song tears the heart right out of my body...for those whom are shaken to the core by this one, try William Fitzsimmons 'Goodnight'
0:00 to 1:02 HOW DOES BEN DO THAT WITH HIS GUITAR?? on the studio version, it sounds like... something ethereal. adds a whole new level of depth to the song.
foda foda foda, pqp, essa música é a mais fodida não só de Death Cab For Cutie, mas de tudo que já ouvi. sem falar na nostalgia enorme que me causa. foda, sem mais.
the thing that makes this song so damned good is the lyrics. even without the chords this song would be as good as now. my personal oppinion is that the lyrics are what makes death cab who they are
@ZutaMtian thank you so much for the kind words! :) they helped a lot! I think you're right on all accounts and I hope you find what your looking for soon too!! :D
What can I say.... just... oh I don't even know. DCFC manages yet again to strike a special chord in me that nothing else can. This song is the truest, most beautiful thing I've ever heard.
The best DCfC song, which is saying a lot
I will never get sick of this song. It's simply beautiful
listening to Death Cab makes me depressed, happy, reminiscent, and gives me chills all at once.
This song is probably the most beautiful thing that I have ever heard before, the melody and the lyrics just are perfect. Can't top them.
Darrel Moreland good luck homie
I'm having doubts now at 34. Married 2 years, together 9. 2 kids. Fuck.
@@joedivision7148 How's it going now, man?
@WilliamAppel3 thanks for asking. Luckily, things are going much better. It was definitely a rough patch but we've pulled through and it's better than ever. @@joedivision7148 Hey, good to hear man!
I've watched this like 20 times now. I love the line "and now he lives inside someone he does not recognize when he catches his reflection on accident"
Love now, Cry later it hurts
Very true. :)
Wish there was a repeat button.
I fell in love with this band instantly when i heard "i will follow you in the dark" 3-4 years ago, been a fan ever since.
Music like this is more than music. One of the things in life that I love, sitting outside relaxing with music like this on
Touches u man

Have your first like in 11 years 😊
So much nostalgia right now...
QueenOfAmber I remember when these videos were first released and seeing them soon after on the Narrow Stairs tour. So glad I got to see them before Chris left.
Chris walla is so talented. Then again the whole band is really. Unbelievable album.
One of the few songs that can reach into your heart and shake your soul. Beautiful.
Brilliant band, awesome tune, and album. 😊❤️🎶🎼”On the back of a motorbike with arms outstretched trying to take flight, leaving everything behind “ Simply beautiful!
this song always makes me think of how sad i was that brotherhood 2.0 ended last year. it's a memory song. and yeah, amazing.
"No longer easy on the eyes, but these wrinkles masterfully disguise, the youthful boy below."
When you're young, you think everything that everyone who has been there says is wrong. And boy were YOU wrong.
I always listen to this song in the car. It's just one of those songs I can never get sick of no matter how many times I hear it. Simply amazing.
They, as a whole, are just so true to themselves as musicians and people and the music they produce is just so honest and simplistically beautiful. By far one of my favorite bands
Really liking this song and the live but mellow sound to it. Good song to just chill out and think to
ive been listening to this song daily now. It becoming my fav song by Death Cab. Really amazing, and pure emotion.
Still listening to it? 😊
Listened to this song for the first time 13 years ago..to this day I still cry listening to it
First time seeing Nick Harmer not play with a pick!
After all these years, it's still only Death Cab that I love from front to back catalog.
Not only the band but this song, gets me through the worst of days.
Thank you, Death cab.
This is the BEST version of this great song!
this band has the most talent and feel for music. nothing short of amazing
I just love how they experiment with the instruments and make a perfect song like this
So happy to have found this once again-
One of the most underrated drummers ever. This beat is so great.
Still probably one of my favorite videos. Incredible song.
I want something beautiful like this music being played on the radio again..
i'm glad that finally a band with talent actually gets recognition. bands like jonas brothers and other disney channel crap and rap dont deserve the popularity they get, they dont write their own music and probably cant even read it. bands like brand new, circa survive, death cab, etc. deserve way more recognition then they get bc of how their music and lyrics are just so amazing.
Listened to this song thousands and thousands of time, over fifteen years or so, it remains the beautiful poetry that it is, Magic x
1) I miss Chris being in the band.
2) This is probably every fans favorite Death Cab song and they probably don't even realize it.
3) Why do we tend to care more about what once was, or what could have been, compared to how things really are now?
Chris reminds me of Johnny Greenwood the more I watch Death Cab live.
I was thinking the exact same thing tbh
This is the first Death Cab song I ever heard, back in 2007. Still my favorite.
same for me! yet never seen this played live :(

The greatest band in the world. The sooner these guys get back in the studio, the better the music industry will be.
I remember when this song came out... always ahead of his time ben was, his songwriting is magic.
always young and always in love. the world around us
one of my favorite death cab songs. it's so fantastically depressing and meaningful
This song is so beautiful. I also like how this version has an acoustic guitar where the normal album version doesn't have one.
Damn, guess I never paid any attention to it. Thanks!
ive never disliked a song by death cab, they are amazing!!!!!!!!!!

Beautiful, absolutely beautiful.

I cannot express to you how much I love this song. I never thought I would have a favourite song but this is it.
Brotherhood 2.0 FTW! It's awesome to go back and read other nerdfighter's comments as they found this song just as I have tonight!
Still here in 2024. 16 years and this song never gets old.
There isn't many bands that can do what DCFC does. Their music is so much more powerful than notes and noises. Their music moves people. Not many bands do that.
this song does something to me that i cannot explain. it's just so pure and beautiful.
I can't put into words how much I love this song and what it has done for me. It really has saved my life. Thanks dcfc.

You may tire of me as our December

masterfully disguise the youthful boy below
Who turned your way and saw something he was not looking for
Both a beginning and an end But now he lives inside
someone he does not recognize

Wow, whoever directed this video did a great job.
the definition of why music is so important to people.

I loveee this song so much. It's so sad...yet so perfect.
It seems we get these one in a day. What's great. Something to wait for :)
Heck of a song < Any way you look at it. So good to see a band so tight and connected.
This is so perfect, it doesnt even need more cowbell.
The lyrics in this song are truly devastating. Extremely personally affecting.
wow such a great song. that drummer's playing is beautiful.
My favorite song by them, and one of my favorite songs of all time by any band.
Corey Allen Band I know this comment is very old now, but 8 years later what do you think of this song?
goodness, i cant express how i love this song. love it.
I'm 50 years old and have been married for almost 22 years...this song tears the heart right out of my body...for those whom are shaken to the core by this one, try William Fitzsimmons 'Goodnight'
0:00 to 1:02 HOW DOES BEN DO THAT WITH HIS GUITAR?? on the studio version, it sounds like... something ethereal. adds a whole new level of depth to the song.
mainly sounds like he is using delay and just had feedback happening when he used the pedal.
I have listened to Death Cab since grade 4 and I still love them equally as much, if not more.
this is one of my relaxation bands.. just amazing
This is the most beautiful song by them i swearr
I miss Chris in the band. My absolute favorite song by DCFC

the people who disliked this video couldn't handle the amount of talent in it
This is my definition of beauty.
I was not trying to describe what this song means its about how at peace this song makes you feel...
Truly amazing!
I love the little dance Ben does with the guitar when he plays.
have to go and see them again!!!
@ZutaMtian thank you so much for the kind words! :) they helped a lot! I think you're right on all accounts and I hope you find what your looking for soon too!! :D
