Thanks my whole channel is dedicated to historical shows and movies so maybe check out some of my other videos. But I will probably make another free movies list at some point!
Thanks for the list. 😊👍🏼 Much appreciated. I was appalled that people are criticising your grammar, and pronunciation of certain words instead of just being grateful for your offerings. It has been my experience that people who criticise others for their English the most, often only speak the one language themselves. 😊 I think perhaps that English isn’t your first language from your accent. It is my own third language of eight, and I used them all in my work as an interpreter and translator. I also have smatterings of other languages which I don’t read and write. Again, thank you for the list and everything else you post.
I speak 4 languages and I have lived across several countries and cities so i think I have developed a weird accent and have a mix of lingos. I seem to struggle with articulation when I do recordings a lot more than i do in real life for some reason lol
@@HistorySpark Oh, I think your narration is excellent. Anybody can mispronounce foreign names or words of which they have no previous knowledge. Just imagine that you’re speaking to your nearest and dearest who don’t mind how you speak or pronounce things. We, who like your posts, won’t mind how you speak anyway and anybody else is not worth the worry. I can relate to the weird accent. People are always asking how my youngest brother and I sound so different. Our mother died when he was very young. Our family came to Australia and our father remarried to a lovely woman of English descent and we started to speak only English at home, so he doesn’t speak our mother tongues and has remained monolingual all his life. He loved our mother dearly, and is proud of our heritage but was never motivated enough to bother with any other language although Australia is country of many diverse people but English being the official language…….In Australia there are more than 250 Indigenous languages including 800 dialects! Great list of films, one I would add is "The 12th Man" true life story from world war II of the Norwegian resistance fighter Jaan Baalstrud and his heroic escape from the Gestapo after a failed sabotage mission. a 10/10 for me.
The film Alatriste is one of very few films which show a realistic battle scene of the 17th century, the Battle of Rocroi on the 19. of May 1643 in northern France.
Last night I saw 'The Gathering Storm'' which is on your list. It is a moving and well-made movie, with an outstanding performance by Albert Finney as Churchill, and many other fine parts. Thank you for suggesting this.
Barbara, Based on your comment I watched 'The Gathering' Storm" last night. I was not disappointed. Great movie about a very great man. Thank you for commenting.
I recommend that you guys also research old productions from Eastern and Central Europe. There are many films that are true gems produced decades ago that are on the same level as great western productions. A few here: Michel the Brave (1970), Khan Asparuh (1981), Mircea (1989), Potop (1974)
I do not know there names but I have seen a couple great Polish films and a Austrian one that were all worthy of watching again and all historical films.
@@deanfirnatine7814 Henryk Sienkiewicz was the Nobel Prize-winning author of Quo Vadis. But he also wrote a series of novels about Polish history that made spectacular films. I'm surprised you did not include "The Legend of Tomiris" on your list. She led an army of steppe tribes against one of the first true emperors in history, Cyrus the Great. The richest man on earth and ruler of Mesopotamia was killed in battle by a woman who rallied her tribes of horsemen after her husband and son were betrayed and murdered by the double-dealing Cyrus.
The film and its premise seem interesting so ill definitely check it out, but its not available to watch for free on RUclips so its not really appropriate for this list
Great list. I don't know if you like to read books, but I highly recommend The Warlord Chronicles by Bernard Cornwell. It is his best work in my opinion, and is set in the early middle ages. It follows King Arthur through the perspective of Derfel Cadarn. It's very fantasy inspired, and Cornwell’s take on the Arthurian mythology is very interesting. A great read!
I do enjoy reading very much so, but with 2 kids under 3 and a full time job and running this RUclips channel it leaves very little time free to do any casual reading. But I will definitely make a note of your recommendation and get around to reading the Warlord Chronicles. Thanks !
A good addition would be Desiree (1954), with Marlon Brando starring as Napoleon. It's a romance, so it's probably not for everyone here, but it's a good historical movie with great sets and costuming. Not sure how many people would be into a Napoleon film without any battle scenes (all the battles are off-screen), but it's free on RUclips, so it might be worth a watch. EDIT: Continuing the Napoleon theme, the entire 2002 Christian Clavier Napoleon miniseries is on RUclips, covering Napoleon's life from the Italian Campaign to St Helena. It's a good show - though it had to cut a lot of the story out for time reasons. The only problem is that neither upload on RUclips is that good. There's a new upload of the series in HD, but the uploader used AI interpolation to increase the frame rate to 60 FPS, and the AI did a particularly bad job of it - making the whole thing look janky and weird, like it's on fast forward. There's an older upload that keeps the frame rate as originally aired, but the problem is that the picture quality is quite low.
The channel "Cinema of the USSR" is a goldmine. "Alexander Nevsky" is crazy - seeing what you can do on half a shoestring with one great composer! The Battleship Potemkin there, too.
I just watched Henry VIII, after seeing your list. Very excellent. Ray Winstone as Henry very good. I am a fan of Ray Winstone after seeing him in Sexy Beast!

Of these, I have watched only Alatriste. It is good, but it's quite long and slow moving. But if you are a history buff, you would enjoy it. My only concern now is whether the makers of these movies would have them taken down on copyright grounds. However, I am shocked at the availability of Lawrence of Arabia and Schindler's List on RUclips.
Honestly, Helen or Troy is a far more faithful recreation of Homer's work than Troy or Troy: Fall of a City. Obviously, it's romanticized with plenty of creative license, but it's pretty good comparatively.
Yes, i feel like with a bigger budget it could have been an even more popular and mainstream version of Illiad than Troy or Troy fall of a city. But i did enjoy all 3 versions of the Trojan War :)
@@HistorySpark Well, actually the story of Helen would be based on the Cypria rather than the Iliad, but that's one of Homer's poems that aren't popular these days
