Girrrrl! I used to be able to get up at 5 am, work out, cook an omelette, take a shower, and be at work by 7:45 am. I’m proud if I can get up by 7:45 am now, and I’m fighting to stay awake by 9 am. My body has changed and I can’t get back with the old habits. So glad to hear that I’m not the only one who can’t fall asleep early and is more productive if I get up later 💜

This was another great video. I go to bed at 8:00 and get up at 1am. I absolutely love it. It is peaceful. I am able to get a lot done. Been making teddy bears for the last 30+ years. I started when I was 18. I am not always working on them at those times. I do love to paint. I feel like I have my own piece of heaven. It's quiet and I can do as I please. I have been doing this now for 3 years. Not sure if this is what happens when a person gets older. I don't need as much sleep as I used to. Must say...... I love your videos. You are beautiful, spunky and have a smile that can light a room up. :)

Oh my goodness this waas so kind of you thank you so so much! That means the world! - Wow what a cool time to work! I bet it is soooo peaceful, isn't it amazing when you listen to your own body and you find what works for you to tend to be so much more creative and productive!

Yes! I have a coworker who "brags" that she naturally wakes up at 5:30 every day without an alarm, as if that makes her a superior human! But she's in bed at 9:30 each night. Why is that superior? I go to bed around midnight and sleep until 7. Same thing, just different. Embrace our differences instead of comparing.

    • @KatnippStudios
      @KatnippStudios  6 лет назад +7

Exactlyyyy! There is no difference in the amount of work she is able to get done in that time because she is asleep by the time Im just starting to settle down and relax for the night, couldn't agree with you more! Just do you! and do what works best for you!

I decided I wanted to wake up at 5 everyday last year, and I ended up getting a part time job for a few hours every morning, great for extra money - but, it killed me. Six months of that routine and I was constantly tired, getting sick, feeling run down and the opposite of energised. I came to the conclusion, that very early mornings are not for me :) I work better starting a little later but working later, the joys of freelancing!

I'm a working mum AND a uni student and I've been on the morning shift for over a year now (i get up at 5.30ish) , and I can tell you now it never gets any better. NO amount of coffee helps, I totally suffer from the '3pm crash' you talk of D: When I get to sleep in on a weekend I get SO MUCH MORE WORK DONE! Im so glad im not the only one :'D Im 25 and by 3 I feel like im 75! Love your videos, I could listen to you all day xx

OMG thank you!! my mother had such a huge issue with me sleeping until 12-2 because she wakes up at 6:30 am. i had tried to wake up around 10-11, but my body was like yours with waking up at 6am. Mentally proud of myself for getting up, but tired as hell halfway through the day. I started to work graveyard shift because I don’t go to bed until 4-6am, which is when i get off of work. this works for me. i cannot do a 6-7 am start shift or even 2pm. now i wake up around 1-5 depending on if i worked. i wish my mom could grasp this simple concept. i get so tired of being compared to others like THIS IS ME so accept me as I am. Thank you Cat so much for this video ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I read in a book that you just have to own you. If your not a morning person, then own that and wake up when you want to and get the work done on your own time. One of the huge perks of working for yourself. No need to beat yourself up about not being a morning person. I have tried many many time to be a morning person and it is just NOT me!

I am so glad you shared this! I have just started being home all day in my studio and the past couple of months have discovered my ideal cycle is to be in bed by 11 and get up at 7--that's 8 hours of sleep and my body no longer crashes between 2-3 in the afternoon. It definately is my jam and I am so happy to know there are others out there like me! :) I actually feel better than I have in a very long time and have been working out 2 x a week as well. Thanks so much soul sister!

Hehehehe that’s amazing!!!! It’s so helpful to know people are in the same boat and we’re not all super humans who can punish our bodies through early hours! We are very lucky to be able to choose the time we wake! 💖💖💖🙌🏻 but I’m glad you found something that works for you by listening to your body! Xxxx

Yes! I am a night owl as well and proud of it! Thanks for sharing and making me feel not so lonely. Sometimes when I wake up later than "usual" I feel like I'm doomed to be "less successful" even when I've been working well into the night (3am). It's especially difficult because I do work a 9-6 job and do my creative work at night.

I am total rubbish in the am if I have to get up before 7:30 or 8 (with an alarm). If I'm allowed to wake on my own, I often sleep until 8:30 or later. The earliest I can go to sleep is 11 or 11:30, on a rare occasion, 10:30. I'm with you, there's no reason to wake in the early morning if you can set your own schedule (I'm self employed so I can) and your body works better that way. I just stumbled on your channel a few days ago and I absolutely adore you! Keep up the sweet, cheerful videos, they add a bit of sunshine to my days.

OMG LOL I had to laugh when i heard you start talking about this subject of early birds and business. I also listen to the million entrepreneurs/motivational speeches and i also did try it and yes i also did feel like crap and forever tired from 12 noon onwards. I have my own routine and i have to work the way i feel comfortable with if that makes sense. Working for yourself is difficult but when your business is going well and your excited at the progress it is making it makes you want to wake up and get your day started (not a frigging 6am lol) at a reasonable hour. I have only started watching your channel recently sweetie but i am addicted tbh. Your fluffiness is not for me but it has grown on me lol you are such an intelligent person in business that it makes me addicted to watch more of your videos. Well done and congratulations in everything you have achieved. I have just received all my heat press, Cricut ect to start my printing business and wow what fun it is. Having a business that has potential to be amazing and be fun at the same time lol i cant wait for it to take off. Patients is not my strong point lol Talk soon xx

I've googled how to be most productive as a night owl, hoping to see how other night owls schedule their day, but so much of the advice is to become an early birb, which doesn't work no matter what I do. It's so important to follow your own body's needs and circadian rhythm. I'm naturally a 4 or 5 am to 2pm or so sleep person, and I get peace and quiet during that time, there's nothing I particularly have to do at this point that really requires me to make myself ill by getting up on someone else's schedule since I'm taking a bit of a step back at work (less hours, starting later, so I can focus on building a better life for my Fiancé and I).

Lol, I can't even wake up at 7.30 am without hitting the snooze button a couple of time. I am not a morning person and when I get up early, for whatever reason, I need time to really wake up. I wanted to try the 5/6 o'clock in the morning routine thing but I don't think it'll work for me. We are all different and our body responds differently to certain situations. I'm more motivated and productive either late in the morning or in the evening. Thank you for sharing your experience with this 💕

Great video. Im with you. I can get up early a couple of days in the week, but Im flagging after lunch and need a snooze. Getting up at 10, I work till 8pm most days. Its a productive day, but easier for an artist in summer.

Thanks for this, I have tried early mornings and it always makes me feel nauseous. I once had to get up early for two years to get to college on time and even after 2 years I still felt nauseous every morning. Yet if I stay up late and sleep in I don’t feel sick.

  • @alyssaawillis

The reason reading on your phone keeps you up versus reading a book makes you sleepy is that the light in your eyes tells your brain to stay awake, while a book doesn’t have a backlight ☺️❤️

I have done 5am club for a bit, loved having that uninterrupted time in the morning ( was going trough courses), but I felt like a zombie during the day, needed a nap, which was pointless. 15years ago I used to get up before 5 each day, as I was working as a post woman, then sleeping from 3-7pm, such a messed up routine. I'm back to getting back up at 7.15 so much better.

  • @imaginaryalice9868

I love this! I have always been a nightowl and have been nagged my entire life that all of my problems would be fixed if I just woke up earlier. I have tried everything but nope, I am a cranky zombie until 12 regardless of whatever sleep patterns I force on myself! It is so nice and comforting to know other people are the same, tbh my most creative hours are post 12am.
Especially right now, I find myself between jobs and have been giving my etsy a bit of a full time go and had it set in my mind that I should be working 9-5. I create nothing but slop before noon it has been such a pointless struggle!

Such a great video! I always hear these things and think that I’m only going to be a successful professional adult if I start getting up super early - but I also find it really hard to get to sleep early at night and I need so much sleep to function that there would be no point, I’d be a zombie all day! It’s good to be reminded that it’s knowing how your body and productivity works that’s the key, not following what works for someone else. No shame in not being an early bird!

I actually had an ex tell me his theory about why some people are early birds and some are night owls. He explained that perhaps it's still generational wiring from our ancestors who were either the Night Watch of their villages or the Day Watch, and honestly...That does make sense when you think about people, like you and me, where our bodies just don't shut off until a certain time at night. Like my mom and I are trying to at least start waking up before noon, but our bodies don't want to shut off fully until about 3am, and that's just how it has always been for us, even as a child I had trouble getting up for school because of it.

Oh damn I'm right there with you. Pretty sure my internal body clock is optimised to sleep from about 3am to 11am, which is less than ideal when trying to do uni or a regular job since the world really is so attached to the idea of the 9-5, boo. I live right in the heart of the city and I just get so much more done in the night when the world is nice and quiet. Hoping to be self-employed soon too so I can work my own hours, fingers crossed :)

Love this SO much! I also tried this on multiple occasions and failed every time. I can't get to sleep before 11pm either and getting up at 6am-7am KILLS me. The first day I do it I feel pumped and full of energy too (I think it's shock LOL) but then it's just a downward spiral of being tired and feeling like i need to nap during the day! I do much better going to sleep at midnight-1am and waking up at 8-9am.

Lark chauvinists fetishise early mornings and short sleep; they shame and punish other chronotypes with noise, insults, scrutiny, gaslighting. My natural f-ed up circadian rhythm (disorder = DSPD) lets me sleep maybe 7am - 5pm (>6hrs lol). I burned out trying to force rhythms my body hates! Lazy isn't a thing. Self abuse isn't virtue. My need to survive on my unpop schedule is exactly why i'm watching this video! Thanks for making it!

I've noticed I also only get any designing done is when I am in the school building because by 3-4 when I go home I'm burnt out. I'm done. Then I spend my evening exhausted and get a second wind just as I should be going to bed. It's like, "why?!" Lol

I used to try and stay up later because I thought the reverse, it seemed like all the night owls I'd heard of were some kind of creative genius staying up til 3am getting heaps of stuff done while I've been dead asleep for at least 4 hours but now that I've accepted what my body wants I just get up when I wake up around 6 or 6:30 and that's what works for me so I'm happy with that.
It's actually nice because my partner is a night owl so I get a couple hours of quiet in the morning when he's sleeping which I really enjoy =)

So so true! I'm the queen of the night owls! :D Most of the time I accomplish my best work at night :D I've tried to switch for several times, and it simply DIDN'T WORK OUT! The girls around me are talking about the "5pm club" all the time and I'm feeling like an alien since I was so unproductive, uncreative and tired every time I tried to get up early. My conclusion is: don't let others dictate you how your sleep rhythm should be!

Omg this is me today. My job allows me to come in early to in turn leave earlier or I can be there from 8a to 5p. Since the time change and it gets dark earlier. I figured taking the earlier start would be best to get home with a little sunlight left. NOPE. I’ve been waking up at 5:30a for weeks to get to work by 7a (long commute). I yawn constantly and my eyes feel heavy and my head cloudy. I need sleep!! Lol

The blue light from screens keeps our mind active, by reading a book you're minimising the blue light before bed which is why you are sleepier

  • @ezenami

I'm crazy late night owl, but switching to mornings because winter is coming and i like to paint with natural light. BTW Sometimes it takes longer to break melatonin cycle and create a new one, taking melatonin before sleep often helps. One thing that helps me with both enrgy and clarity no matter when i get up is Wim Hof breathing before bed (in bed), first thing when i wake up (still in bed) and then mid day. each time takes 2-5 min - and makes a world of difference.
p.s. reading book is more sleep inducing than reading on phone because light (especially blue light of phones and ipads) delays that magical melatonin production :3
    Cheers! Love your channel

Good on you for giving it a real go! I've never been a morning person, I love my sleep far too much 😂Totally relate to the snooze button, even tried putting it on the other side of my room (and I put obstacles in the way in an attempt to wake me up more) ... just climbed back into bed, hah.
Some artists I know swear by power naps combined with a short night sleep cycle, but it's not maintainable long term, more for deadlines. I hope you find something that works perfectly for you some day :)

Still cool that you challenged yourself like this! I totally believe people have different time-rhytms - personally I get up fairly early but then I need a LOT of time before I need to do anything .D so I'd rather get up at 6 if I needed to be at the office at 10 because I wouldn't be an anxious rushed mess!

I'm naturally a night owl. One of the only times I can actually be awake early is if I was sick and that's only because I can't stay asleep. So, unless I have somewhere to be (or I'm sick), I'm not getting up early. But that's okay. Everybody just functions differently.

Don’t beat yourself up, girl, it’s no use. I get up between 5:00 and 6:00 am every morning, but that’s just because I have a day job, and a side hustle. So in order to have time for my side hustle I had to create more time. Sleep deprivation can do more harm than good, so just don’t do it! 😂

I did try something similar to this. Not as early as 6. I started slowly making it earlier I normally slept in till 10 if I don’t have stuff to do. Then I set my alarm to 9:30 and then to 9, then to 8:30. Am gonna keep it at 9 for now as that’s the best time for me if I go to bed at 11:30.

    • @KatnippStudios
      @KatnippStudios  6 лет назад

Yesss! Such a good idea, then at least you have plenty of time to go to sleep! Some morning birds find it really hard to keep awake! Where I have the opposite problem I naturally start to feel tired around 11/12pm :O

you've literally described my exact experience trying to be a morning person. it's just not for me.
and it's hard when you work for yourself (i'm a freelance writer and i work from home) because you need to keep yourself motivated and be as productive as you can, so finding ways to do that effectively is important. but trying to force yourself into someone else's version of success just doesn't work.

Oh. My. Thor. I love you. Haha! I've been going through the SAME THING! I watched a bunch of RUclips telling me how millionaires get up early and slackers sleep in and I started getting up at 6:00am. That lasted like 2 weeks. I'm back to trying again tomorrow, of course, until 6:00am gets here. My struggle is...I like being up early once I'm awake. I just hate getting up!!

I tried to do this aswell more for mental health reasons as I read (googled8) that getting up when the sun rise is better for you but I couldn't stick it out either, also isn't having a nice lay in a perk of working for yourself and you get to pick your own hours, who cares what others do, do what's best for you I say.

lool you tell the best stories!!! it's funny 'cause for me my body naturally gets up at 6am or 7pm ish the latest. However earlier this year I tried following someone else's routine and getting up 3hrs earlier . Never again! Aint for me. I was 😴 for the whole day and only felt fully awake after 3pm. That comparison thing led me to do it but never again 😂

Yeah, I tried this once but I didn't last 3 weeks!! I don't think it works too well for creatives, unfortunately. But those who do this apparently have another whole routine that helps them get a good night sleep and fall asleep earlier. One of the common ones was taking a bath or shower an hour before you go to bed. Apparently, it simulates the flux in body temperature before you fall asleep naturally and can, therefore, help with a really good night's sleep. Glad it's nto just me who ditched this idea!

I am a night owl and have always been jealous of early birds. The same thing happened to me that I was just tired all day and slow and sluggish. It's just not how my body functions and I'm fine with that. Though as I get older i get tired earlier at night so i'm not as productive late at night like I used to be because i'm worn out from my daughter who is also a night owl.

I don’t know I’d any one has mentioned this. If you are on your device at night the blue back lights keep your mind active & prevent you from going to sleep. They suggest not looking at a device for an hour before bed. If you want to get up earlier, only increase the time by 15-30 minutes at a time. This is less stressful. Also. Find at the afternoon dip I need protein. Nuts seem to help.

Totally a night owl myself as well - I struggle getting up in the morning for my "day job" which pays the bills. On the note of wondering why reading a book makes you fall asleep over reading on your phone? It's to do with the light the phone (or any device) emits. Basically the light from the device is telling your brain that it's day time, and your body produces the hormones/chemical to keep you awake and active - whereas having a dimly lit room while you read a book is helping your brain to recognise it's night time (and natural sleeping time) and your body produces the hormones/chemicals to make you sleep. Very basic, non-scientific explanation! It's quite interesting though.

Isn’t that the truth! I, too, have always wished I were a morning person. Seems like if you say you saw the sunrise it means you are more motivated...not! I, too, have tried getting up early, excercising early...and felt sick and tired the rest of the day. Or as you would say...knockered! A new word that will be fun to use 😊. LOL. Too cute. I am a night owl, just as my G’ma was, so I sleep in, and busy the rest of the day....that is that. I am what I am. Just like Kat. 😁. Take good care.

I think your normal schedule is fine, but if you want to get up earlier to be more productive, it's best to do it at small increments, like 5-10 minutes earlier each day or every few days. This way your body can slowly adjust. This is what a cognitive psychologist said.

Its been that way since I was a baby, my mother even had to quit her job so that she could stay up at night while my father slept. When I was 12 we were told my circadian clock is off and its hard to fix that.
