    Congrats on scoring the new amp! Enjoy your channel a lot and appreciate that you're a classically trained musician. In addition to being an audiophile, I'm a veteran music teacher in California's public school system. I really appreciate your perspective and what your background brings to the table. Congratulations for your new amp! I was lucky enough to get a very good deal buying a second hand H30 a couple years ago. That was also my dream amp. I needed an very current capable amp to drive my Dynaudio Confidence 5 speakers (rated 83 dBs at 1 m). Back then, I had a Linn Kairn preamp that was definitely not up to the task. I then moved on to a Classe CP700 preamp that was very good but now I am using the German tube preamp Valvet Soulshine Pure. It is a great sounding preamp especially since I upgraded the 12AU7 tubes from the stock Genelex Gold Lion to a pair of NOS Brimar CV4003. This preamp is a model in dynamics and with the addition of The Brimar, has this holographic presentation of the music.
    Hope this helps!
    I also want to add that going from unbalanced to balanced to the H30 is a must.

Happy to see a 'system' video from you and glad you're enjoying the Hegel. It's a monster. I use a Hegel V10 phonostage at the moment and it's great; wonderful brand. I am so happy for you! Nothing like having plenty of power. I am so very lucky to have my NAD218. It provides me with the best audio I have ever had. It is rated at 470wpc @ 4ohms. It has brought the dynamics out of my tower speakers. It's like I ripped out a 4 cylinder engine and installed a V8. I don't play my selections any louder than I used to, but the audio is just so much better than my 80wpc amps.

    I have the PS Audio BHK Preamplifier. In fact, I have one of the 50 copies signed by Bascom H. King. Before the BHK I had several preamps, both solid state and tube. After the first listening, I decided for the BHK, not only for its performance but for all of its balanced inputs, balanced outputs and superb headphone amplifier. If you can get one, don't hesitate. Second, I have three music servers: the Innous Audio Statement Next-Gen with the Next-Gen PSU, the Auralic G2.2, and the Wyred 4 Sound MS1 music server. If you can give a listening to the MS1 you will be surprised.

      Same here. I have a Hegel h160 which I like but started to look at equipment that is lower power, lighter and simpler versus an all in one along with speakers that can be easily driven with low power. Speakers that sound dull on anything but powerful amps due to current draw even at lower SPLs I avoid.
      Still have the Hegel but also have a Van Alstine CA-1 and a Keces E40. Do they sound less than the Hegel? Different to a degree but not worse but each brings certain things to the table as to better and at the lower SPLs I listen at it doesn't make sense to go and buy really expensive and heavy stuff. Depending on speakers, any of them can perform equally well with some differences in how they present. For a budget first amp/second system/small system...I speak highly of the Keces E40 if you do not need the power of a large amp. I call it my little Hegel.
      The newest addition I picked up are speakers from a small artisan manufacturer from Europe although I was looking at other brands at the time. It's what I call the veer-off where you put your efforts into securing one thing and buy something else. But there were reasons that made me make the choice.
      Floorstanders are generally out of the equation just because of size/weight distribution although I would consider a Blumenhofer Fun 13 MK 2.
      Once class D integrateds become equal or exceed performance of my AB integrateds and at more reasonable prices for me I will look at those but some speaker manufacturers I have called told me not to use Class D with their speakers for whatever reason.
      Don't get me started on Dacs.

    I am all in on you pursuing a tube pre-amp to pair with the Hegel.
    I had a matching solid state Bryston bp25 pre-amp with my Bryston 3B SST which sounded neutral, fairly detailed and "nice", but when I changed the pre-amp to a Sonic Frontiers sfl-1 hybrid tube pre-amp with a wonderful n.o.s. german military spec Siemens tube
    The music became much more alive, dynamic, rhythmic. The soundstage deepened and widened, vocals and instruments have a more realistic timbre. The bass is just as tight but punchier, more fleshed out midrange and the treble is extended, super detailed and airy. You would have to pay much more for a solid state pre-amp that can do all of those things. I did have to do some research and a little tube rolling to find the right tube but it was well worth it. I hope you enjoy your adventure in finding a great pairing pre-amp to your Hegel.

    This suggestion is most likely moot. Even though the H30 is a fairly cool running, it is blessing in disguise that it does not fit in your rack. After owning many big, heavy, high current amps like it. I do find they still benefit when they have enough space around them to breathe. I would suggest jut keeping it on the floor or find a matching amp stand.
    Suggestions for a tube preamp, will depend on the sound you're looking for, Zesto is a great choice for a nice warm sound, other option could be Rogue RP7, a used VTL 5.5, or 2nd hand Audio Research LS28, however their presentation seems to be more about accuracy than old school tube sweetness. Congrats on the H30 IMHO it is a wonderful piece, enjoy the next leg of your audio journey. Wish you the best.

    • @poetryonplastic
      @poetryonplastic  Месяц назад

      Yes, when I buy a house next year I will likely place the amp on a stand in between the speakers, and keep the audio rack off to the side.
      The rogue rp7 was an early contender, but I ran into two issues when reading up on it. 1. I’m not sure if it’s xlr connections are fully balanced
      2. John Atkinsons measurements in stereophile and his commentary suggest problems with the bass on this preamp unless you have a power amp input impedance of at least 30k ohms. The Hegel has 20k input impedance via xlr.

    The VTL TL 6.5 or the Audio Research Ref 6 are slightly more retail than the H30, but close enough to be reasonable pairings with it. Perhaps older versions can be had for roughly what you paid for the amp. They also have matching phono stages in case you ever want to upgrade in that department sometime down the road. Hey, nice amp and great review. I've driven from the Springs up to Erie a few times to save on shipping. Those guys are great, and easy to deal with. One of the guys (Ian, who no longer works there) gave me a tour last year. Just cool. I was a bit in awe when you said you turned off your REL and had all the bass you could want through your Harbeths.

      @@nacarp2000 this is a fantastic suggestion thank you! The only thing that worries me is the impedance curve on the outputs which is impossible to know unless you measure it. do you want to listen to stereo or multichannel?
      An AVR can do a lot of things but nothing really well.
      I decided on stereo.
      And after more than 30 years, many attempts and at the age of 67, my setup is complete. And I'm a little tired too. 😎

    I’ve had the Hegel H80. Later moved to a H360. The sound was very different. I knew that the major diff compared to the H390 was the digital section. So I added a Pontus 2 12th-1. Its an amazing DAC and gave a lot to the system that I was missing. However, I still thought the H360 sounded slow and congested (even though more confident) compared to the H80. I later stumbled on a H20 and was then after a preamp. After a lot of research I went with the Denafrips Hades 12th-1. Oh man, I am finally having everything that I wanted in my system. The experience in change coming from fully integrated units from Hegel to the H20 with Denafrips front ends was just staggering. The sound is smooth, airy with a great sense of scale and dynamics. I think the Denafrips ads a bit of romance and musicality (which I missed with the H360) and the H20 just controls it all so well especially the low end. It probably doesn’t cover all your needs in terms of functionality but I would think the Denafrips Athena, together with the Pontus 2 DAC, would be a good pairing with the H30. Happy listening!

    Hi What do you have to take in for consideration when matching a power and pre amp?

    • @poetryonplastic
      @poetryonplastic  Месяц назад

      First consideration is impedance matching, which is greatly aided by measurements from places like Stereophile and Sounstage Network so I can know if the pre outputs have output across the frequency spectrum that matches with what the amplifier can handle. After that, the considerations are mostly function (inputs, controls, etc) and sound. I have a very powerful solid state amp that has authoritative bass, I figure I may want to pair that with a tube pre that is going to introduce a bit of space and warmth (2nd order harmonic distortion usually) which can generate the sensation of instruments having greater "air" around them. The trick is to strike a balance with both the amp and the preamp so that they compliment each other.

  • @dixieflatline1189
    @dixieflatline1189 Месяц назад

    Question. How does H30 compares to 390 or 590 in area of upper registers? I was also at first very impressed by Hegel's amps year ago, but after expanding my hi-hi horizons and have also in mind live sound of instruments I just concluded, that Hegel 390/590 is great for studio recordings, but for live recordnings not at all or even studio recordings which wants to present liveliness, airy, it simply maks them "dead" - liveless.
    Live Orchestral pieces can sound almost as studio versions. No true ambient. So is H30 different in this aspect?
    This should not be mixed with sens of a great efortless and space between instruments and natural tamber (which can be too bold or chesty sometimes) in doing that Hegel is great.

    • @poetryonplastic
      @poetryonplastic  Месяц назад +1

      Generally I feel like this has a sweeter upper end, and that highs are a little more open than my 390 which did feel a little bit “off the board” in how it did treble. I need to do far more listening to really give a strong impression in that regard.

    Ho 63 anni e voglio consigliarti di acquistare un amplificatore in classe D.
    Dopo tanti anni (e tanti soldi spesi) ora ho un impianto eccellente con un piccolo amplificatore che trovi nei canali di vendita cinesi online a 25 euro. Lo potrai alimentare fino a 24 V., 3,5 A. Con quel voltaggio il suono è molto potente in una sala da 40 mq. Il nome dell'amplificatore è MiniDamp.
    Inoltre ha la funzione Bluetooth (che è molto stabile). Per i cavi sono sufficienti quelli commerciali da 3/4 euro.
    Accoppialo a casse anni '70/'80 che suonano decisamente bene.
    Io ho le RAM CD20 (ora Falcon Studio 20).
    Tra casse e amplificatore ho speso 125 euro (ma le casse che erano del '78 hanno ancora gli altoparlanti originali SEAS).
    In conclusione la qualità (se sei fortunato e conosci cosa suona bene) costa nulla.
    L'impianto è completo di un lettore cd Philips e un giradischi Denon con testina Stanton.
    Saluti da Roma. Buona domenica.
