Holy shit. For me one of the most puzzling aspects of the game was how lacklustre Max's Everyday Heroes picture was and you made me see it in a new light. I know everyone had to think it was good for the game's plot to happen. You made me understand what was special about it in a thematically relevant interpretation. This is what these channels should be all about.

I’ve always seen Max’s photo as a representation of her constant introspection and questioning of herself and her actions. Throughout the game, whenever she makes a decision she immediately questions it and believes she makes the wrong one. Thus is constantly looking into the past, as she’s doing in this photo.
Then her actual self in the photo is out of focus, showing how her introspection leads to her losing sight of what is important in life. E.g. Most of her classmates say how Max just spends her time absorbed in her camera and her own world.
Ironically the present or current Max who’s actually critiquing the photo is still looking back at her work and believing she could’ve done better, as no doubt that Max in the photo is doing. IE, she’s constantly wrestling with her self worth and abilities, despite how talented she is. She even later rips it up, further showing her mistrust of herself. Interestingly, she rips up a picture of herself, just before the butterfly enters, as she takes a photo of that. This may represent how Max’s life is sidelined by Chloe’s reentering her life.
I’ve gotta whole lot more on Chloe but eh.

Regarding Chloe (although she is a polarized character that is talked about today), I consider that she has a congruent and understandable growth / redemption arc. Some people say that "the whole game was a bad person and now she regrets", but they ignore the fact that the events of the game unfolded in a very short time: exactly 3 full days, in traumatic conditions and that they they will try to connect after many years.

@@Trojianmaru LiS 3 is amazing! Imo the best one so far, though I know some people will still be too attached to LiS1, and that's ok. I feel like the relationships and script are more solid, the plot is interesting and keeps your attention. Characters are very layered, even the ones we may view as villains OR as heroes, even more than LiS 1 ou 2 (since Jefferson was basically just a psycho and that was it, and 2's villains were just racist pieces of shit).
Love interests both have their upsides and downsides, to the point that it could be difficult for one to actually choose (which almost didn't happen in other games. Even if in LiS 1 some went for Chloe and some for Warren, they didn't really consider the other option as they were playing). But a bit like LiS 2, I feel like the focus isn't on a specific friendship/romance, which is ok, because not every game should focus on it. Alex's powers are way more interesting than I thought they'd be, the twists are amazing and so are the visuals. TLDR: I really recommend LiS 3.
(also, I get why people don't really like LiS 2 that much, but I actually really did for the most part. Unfortunately, I think it was also the heaviest one, and the public wasn't really ready for that. There should be a balance, and LiS 3 does it pretty well, kinda like LiS 1)

I fully agree with your commentary on Chloe in the finale. She's such a tragic character and her arc's ending truly shows us what was buried underneath layers upon layers of pain, loss, and anger. You just want to see her get the chance to become that person once more, openly so, which makes the necessity of her death that much more painful because she didn't get that chance, and she never will. It's that hurt that makes me love the sacrifice Chloe ending and that makes it one of my fav endings to any story.

I have a different view of the ending I percieve as canonical (at least my headcanon), I pick saving Chloe as my ending and I wish you’d have gone into that ending a bit more.
It starts with Max tearing her photo in half, confidently saying that she is never going back to that moment and she’s done second-guessing herself. After just standing there, watching the tornado rip into Arcadia Bay, it overwhelms Max and she averts her eyes and hugs Chloe for comfort who just stands there staring at the tornado in a way I can barely describe, some combination of awe, sorrow and inner turmoil that begins to show the growth Chloe has gone through, that she is now silently bearing this burden for Max after everything Chloe dumped on her, burdening Max with her grief and anger, now she’s a shoulder for Max to cry on.
As they drive through the devastated Arcadia Bay (no, guys, they know everyone is dead, swept away by the tornado, stop saying they would go after people, the last thing they need to do to themselves right now is go on a fruitless search for the corpses of their friends and family), Max can’t help but doubt herself, staring out at the window, she clearly feels remorse, but she knows what she’s done and wouldn’t do it differently, she still feels like she consigned a town full of people to die. But Chloe sees her like this and stops the truck, just gently putting her hand on Max’s shoulder and giving her a reassuring look, Max responds with a smile and looks forward before they continue down the road. This to me perfectly encapsulates the journey both these characters have gone on.
Chloe has gone through this whole thing with her family, with Rachel, feeling abandonment and dejection, that everyone just lets her down and that all the unfairness can’t be her fault so she can’t take responsibility for it, now she has someone who won’t leave or let her down and adding to that, she can actually be a good friend to Max, no longer screaming and raging at how unfair life is and instead being a pillar of support for Max, not just in terms of being there and doing nothing, but even offering emotional support. In the comics following this she has even been able to land an actual job, a fantastic arc showing the decline of an innocent child due to trauma, her long painful road to healing all that trauma and making something constructive out of it, someone who doesn’t corrupt their friends and family, but who makes their lives better. And Max’s growth from this shy, insecure introvert who second guesses everything she does, to an adult with the confidence to do things, to even make mistakes and then living with them. One of the most important things about this is the duality, Max and Chloe needed each other to grow and they continue to bring out the best in each other, to the very last shot in the game.
And to that note, you could also think about Max’s perspective on the whole disaster. As someone else pointed out, given all Max has been through, how DARE she think that going back in time again would solve anything? That there would still be some simple solution to everything, much less one that requires her to sit and weep in a public toilet and let her best friend get shot and murdered 6 feet away from her. She’s tried this so many times and it never works, something always goes wrong, her hindsight doesn’t matter, things don’t just turn out the way she wants. Even though we know the truth, that letting Chloe die would stop the tornado, what would it say about Max’s character if she made this choice? Her last act in the game is to second guess herself AGAIN and to abandon Chloe AGAIN (a version of Chloe who still feels abandoned by everyone in her life). Her last act is to repeat her biggest mistake in life and be steered by her biggest flaws and that SOMEHOW gives you a positive outcome. To me it leaves both Max and Chloe’s arcs incomplete and doesn’t present the main theme or message of this game as strongly as it could and what you get in return is just a rupture in your tear ducts. I think you can prefer this ending, but I don’t like it as a summation, an ending to the game we got, especially with regards to Max as the protagonist.

I loved & still love Life Is Strange. I’m really looking forward to the remasters of it & Before The Storm coming out next year. Throughout my first playthrough, I fell in love with Chloe. I felt a lot of her pain reflected in myself & I sympathized with her. By the end of episode 4 I’d said that if the end came down to saving Chloe or Arcadia Bay, the town was a goner. When the time came for the final choice, it wasn’t as easy as I thought. I still chose Bae over Bay.
When Warren told Max that he had Nathan & that she should run, I joked that Warren was like “I’m going to beat his fists with my face.” 🤣
At the end of episode 3 when Max had run to Chloe’s house, I noticed the wheelchair ramp leading to the front door & thought that Chloe might have been paralyzed from the waist down but Dontnod was like “Ha ha, you naive fool!” while twisting the emotional knife in my guts.
When Max & Chloe found Rachel’s body, I cried for Chloe’s sake. Not for Rachel because based on what we learned in Frank’s RV & clues in other places like the junkyard (the letter there was Rachel’s attempt to tell Chloe about her relationship with Jefferson, confirmed by Dontnod), Rachel was at best a very self interested woman. At worst, I felt she was manipulating Chloe.
Another fun fact: when Jefferson said “Too obvious” while talking about photographing someone in a dark corner, that was a note that Jefferson’s VA accidentally read aloud.

Yeah, Rachel was pretty sociopathic. She was enormously manipulative to Chloe, and others, always trying to get what she wants, (i.e. drugging Victoria just to get her part in the play).

When it comes to this game and other “your choices matter” games like any telltale titles, a lot of people like to complain that these games don’t really let you choose and that your choices don’t matter, and they say “What’s the point of giving me a choice if it doesn’t effect the story?”
To that, I like to say this: “sometimes, you can’t change the destination. Hell, maybe you can’t even change what path you take, but in every game, you can always at the very least change the little things that happen along the way.”

I love the subtle little thing that in the final choice of the game max allows herself to be selfish in wanting her best friend while Chloe becomes selfless in the end. Nice little role reversal from what they were up to that point.

Thank you for shedding more light on the depth of the game than I was already aware of. I always knew I was missing a lot by not having a background in photography.
First time I played I enjoyed the game, but didn't like Chloe that much (like you, the mild mistreatment got to me as well), so I didn't hesitate much to sacrifice her at the end (especially since that was what she was asking us to do). But it was really hard to euthanize her in the alternate reality, and I didn't. I came to care about her way more the second time around. I also didn't suspect Jefferson at all until it was fully revealed. I am proud to say though that I saved Kate the first time around, despite not seeing her attempted suicide coming, since I did care and was curious enough. It's a very special game, and I always appreciated the complexity of the characters.

What's crazy is how you mention all the choices in the game mattering because the journey matters more than the destination, which ties into what Max says during the Double Exposure gameplay trailer. Moses: "Didn't take you as a 'it's the journey, not the destination' type." Max: "I mean, I guess I'm not. It's more like, sometimes you reach the destination... alone, and that's okay." I believe this is a direct callback to the sacrifice of Chloe (which I believe to be the cannon ending), as Max, who, despite desperately trying to balance saving Chloe's life and saving Arcadia Bay, eventually realized she couldn't have both. She had to sacrifice her best friend to save all those around her, even those who were mean to her or others. Sure, she still got justice for Rachel and Chloe and Kate (and others), but she arrived there alone. And when you think about how many times she had to alter the fabric of reality in order to keep Chloe alive, it shows that Max understands that she was not meant to meddle with Chloe's fate, but for her deaths to act as a sacrifice to prevent the deaths of others. This is a sad realization that Max and the player come to realize throughout the game, which even Chloe realizes in the end. Max suffered through multiple timelines of abuse, both from Jefferson's physical/mental abuse onto her, but also from the pain of knowing Chloe was dead, and the pain she felt from traversing time the way she did. She went through multiple realities for Chloe, but that journey allowed her to mature and realize that, yes, she was given this power to change something, but that wasn't Chloe's fate; it was the fate of those around her and Chloe. And this is the destination she reached alone. Alone, she finally got justice for all the characters who had suffered in one way or another. Despite Max not being friends with all of them, she, alongside Chloe, realized that, especially in this case, "the needs of the many outweigh the need of the few, or the one." The one being Max (or Chloe, depending on how you look at it.) Max 'needed' to save her friend. But in the end, she realized that what she was truly given her power for was not to get what she needed, but what others needed. What Kate needed. What Victoria needed. Hell, even what Arcadia Bay needed through the investigation of the Prescott's. But yeah, I just wanted to give my thoughts on something I picked up on. I watched the gameplay reveal last night and, when watching this video, I made a connection between the comment you made about the choices still mattering despite the outcome and Max's own view of the situation, and I wanted to share it to all those who might see it. I just love how fleshed out and beautiful the stories of LIS 1/BTS were, as I literally finished the games for the first time also last night. These games really show that, even if you could go back and change things, maybe you shouldn't, as making one change would lead you to make another to fix things, leading you down a rabbit hole of that. Sometimes, it's better to let things happen and then stop it from happening again, as opposed to somewhat selfishly trying to change fate. Also, the people who say all the choices don't matter are wrong, as said choices allowed Max's realization to occur, and allowed for her to figure out how to stop Jefferson and Nathan, with a side bonus of putting the Prescott's as a whole on the hot seat. Max grows as a person because of her choices, and, although bittersweet, realizes she can't prioritize her need to have Chloe in her life over the needs of others to be kept safe and out of the reach of Jefferson and Nathan/the Prescott's. Also, that's why I believe the other ending to not be canon, as it just shows Max and Chloe being selfish and not caring for others, which is the opposite of what the game tries to portray, which can be seen through Kate's story (especially after her death), Chloe's character arc, as well as Max's character arc. Chloe and Max learn to not be selfish and to what's right for others.

I'm starting to really see that opinions on Chloe really depend on life experience because almost every person i talk to about Chloe as a character and if they like her or not bring up a person that Chloe reminds them of, I think it's really interesting. for me, she honestly reminds me of myself the year this game was released. I was 17 and really fucking angry. I had (and have) various mental health issues that I wasn't handling very well, was treated awfully by the school system generally, fought with my parents (mostly my mum) a lot, and generally thought the world was out to get me. I had also just come out the summer leading into school. I had thought when I first played that I was more like max because of my nerdy tendencies but playing this again recently hit me in the face with how much Chloe reminds me of a younger, angrier me and why I was probably so soft with her despite some pretty mean stuff she does. this game keeps bringing up stuff about myself I didn't realize before, it's why it's my absolute favorite.

Since i thought all of the Life is Strange games were connected, I finally gave the first Life is Strange a chance. Playing the first episode already got me super hooked and ended up playing every episode and then after playing i was left overwhelmed with emotions and then i suddenly felt empty (as we all do after playing a great game) and ended up wanting more.

Chloe is a hard character to actually LIKE. not love, like. her offering up her life for Arcadia Bay, while dramatic for the circumstances, is a perfect culmination of everything that's happened in the game and her finally realizing that she is NOT the center, and to stop being so selfish. she doesn't HAVE to die for that, as the lesson is learned whether you go back through the photo or not, but going back to allow her to fulfill what destiny the universe had for her is a satisfying but bitter end to her story, and i kind of prefer it, because you let her make that choice. Chloe's writing is awesome

I really like David as well, he kind of feels like Kenny in The Walking Dead games where he's very flawed but his heart is in the right place. I love this game. Watched so many other play it. Saw this and immediately went to it. When you try to fix everything by going back in time and her back snaps. That always hit me hard. And eventually... I gave her peace. That shit brings me to tears almost every time. Because it hit too close to home. Unfortunately it just hit a lot closer. There's a woman who started dating my uncle 10 years ago. They didn't work out but she's been my friend and part of my life since. 5 days ago. Her, my cousin, and his dad were in a car crash. My cousin not a scratch on him. His dad had some head trauma and because he was on drugs at the time he refused to go to the hospital.... but this woman... who for the love of God I can't remember how to spell her name... well they hit a telephone poll on their front right tire. The car flipped over and they ended up on the grass far from the road. She didn't have her seat belt on... she hit the roof and her spine snapped. She had surgery which was a success... but they still don't think she'll survive. And you know it didn't hit me. All I felt was anger at my uncle. But im at 25:41 all this reminded me of the choice I made years ago... to let her have peace. Idk.. she had a dog named char and that dog... not so smart. I was fucked up mentally from PTSD out walking one night. She saw me and tried to cheer me up. She acted like a stone was attacking her and the damn dog started attacking the rock and it was just funny as hell. She knew the place I was in... she had tried to kill herself before with pills. Just memories like that are flooding back to me and I just... idk what to do. Cherish the people in your lives. You never know when they might be gone...

Life is Strange is my 2nd most favorite game, and I don't think a 40-50 minute video like this can do it justice, but a video of this length did it as much justice as possible. There's so many other moments in this game, so many outcomes and decisions and moments not touched upon.
I'm not saying that as a critique of this video, but as a praise of the game itself. This game is just. It's a masterpiece. I think it's real, pure storytelling at its finest. Are there some flaws? Yes. Do they outweigh all the good? Do they distract me from what I love most about the game? No.

I’m about a year older than Max if she’s a HS senior in 2013, kids/teens having cell phones was still kind of new, plenty of kids still didn’t have them. This had teachers acting like they were at war with cell phones when I was in school lmao
Schools tried telling us they weren’t allowed on campus at all, then parents complained, so we had to keep them in out lockers and turned off during school, but then they banned students from using lockers, so we had to just keep them off in our bags. If you were seen holding a phone, even if it was off, they could take it and give you detention. If you took out your phone in class, it depended on the teacher and if you were a troublemaker I guess, most would take them or send you to the principal. Eventually parents complained about the phones being taken, so they just resulted to yelling at students and giving them detention. Phones in class were a big deal, but everyone had their “tricks” to sneak on them.
It actually became a bit of a running gag to trick teachers into thinking you had a phone to make them flip out, only to find you didn’t have a phone on you at all, which would just piss the teacher off even more that they fell for it lmao

I'm lucky for all of my teachers to be cool with them but many teachers still want them always in your bag and never brought out during class.

While the writing is flawed in that it feels cringey as sgit at times. A large reason I end up liking it, is because the clear love and time put in. It ends up being part of the charm. And honestly. It's why I can never see the Sacrafice Chloe ending without crying. The direction, writing, and love given makes it sting. Especially knowing that Chloe hadn't seen Max since her dad's funeral.

One thing I always found sad is , whatever you do, no matter what ending you choose, Joyce will always suffer in some capacity.

one thing that is interesting is that Victoria is at Chloe's funeral. everyone else, i completely understand - Trevor and Justin were her friends, Dana, Warren, and Kate are all friends with Max and would want to be there for her (also, Dana and Kate knew her - Dana in Before The Storm, and Kate and her are apparently cordial), Principle Wells bc she died IN SCHOOL, but Victoria? they didn't get along at ALL, especially evident in Before The Storm, and in this timeline, there's no way Victoria cares about Max enough to go to her funeral, so it's just so interesting that she'd go. i wonder what her reasonings are. is it because Nathan killed her, and wanted to pay respects? guilt from treating Chloe like garbage?

    • @andydyer6591

I would go with the guilt interpretation: Nathan was her friend and she probably felt guilty that she didn't see it coming (or chose to ignore the warning signs). But Victoria does have compassion, buried deep below the Queen Bee personality she puts on. She was devastated when Kate committed/attempted suicide because of what she did. She would probably feel similarly about Chloe's death, wishing she hadn't been so petty and mean.
My headcanon is that during the few days between Chloe's death and the funeral, she opened up to Max about these feelings and Max suggested she attend the funeral to get closure.

its so nice to see someone talk positively about this game! i have recently played life is strange and before the storm for the first time and fell in love, they both mean so much to me ... even though there are sm people who loved this game a majority of the videos i found on it were talking about how bad the writing is or how the time travel isnt flawless etc when all i wanted to do was find other people who enjoyed this game
such a good video! i loved hearing your interpretations on different little details some of which i had never even thought about, also hearing about the artists jefferson talked about is something i never thought to look into but is actually really interesting

Found your channel through this video, was a very good commentary. Personally I really agree with the mindset of "here's the resources, make your own decisions" as well. I also like the fact that you pointed out how Max is just a normal girl who happened to have a superpower. She didn't go all in with it, she just went about with her life. I think it's a really natural thing to do. I can't help but to think of a man who either never or rarely needs to sleep in his life and he can also remember pretty much anything he's seen to the finest detail. Yet from what I've seen he hasn't made a huge deal of it, just a part of his life and he lives with it. Rambling aside, great video :>

I graduated highschool this year, and almost half of the work you do is based off technology, and coming from a poor school, half of the students would get laptops, and whoever has their phones would do assignments on there. So it became almost a critical element to graduating. And teaching us, phones aren't just to text gossip or scroll through social media. But to upload files and send professional messages to teachers and peers. Making a phone less of a toy or distraction, and more of a tool, or a means of professional use of new age technology.

My feeling about Max’s photo was that she was standing aside, watching others live. The focus on her is blurry because she herself is not clear on how to become part of the photos (ie memories and moments) as opposed to simply observing. She is undefined and yearns for the clarity she feels others posses. Clarity she feels Chloe exudes.

though i did choose bae over bay, i fully understand how story wise, sacrificing chloe just makes sense. the entire game ends at the very beginning.

what i love about this game is that it has the ability to make you feel so strongly. my emotions were all over the place. i will admit i cried multiple times, first during the euthenasia scene in the alternate reality, then during nathan's voicemail to max when she was driving. i was sobbing during the final scenes. the game really has a way of breaking your heart and shocking you with disturbing themes, all the while making you feel for these characters.

While i didn't sacrifice Chloe myself, i think you missed a win on Chloe's burial: Victoria is here, and considering she's no friend of Chloe (They never interact in this game and clearly dislike one another in the prequel) we can easily assume she's here for Max, which is a great and subtle character development
Honestly loved Victoria in the game, kinda like David she starts off as antagonistic but with the right choices, can become more and more friendly until she can admit by the end she think Max is the coolest person in Blackwell and that she respect her work with the two realising they can actually get along with each other (technically her "beta" can get the same treatment with Courtney being friendly and Taylor calling Max her friend regardless of Max's relation with Victoria, but they are less important)

I've been down the dark path and when I failed to end my own life, it did make me stronger, but still it would have helped if I could have reached out to someone.
But I felt like I was trapped between a rock and a hard place.
I understand the difficulty in life, and I wish it was easier for us to be able to confided with others.
Now I understand no matter how worse thing get, eventually things will get better.
Its called hope and it can take a long time, but things do get better and we just need to keep fighting for a better life.

Fun fact: Jefferson uses what looks like a camera made by a Swedish manufacturer, "Hasselblad". It's hella expensive, I'm pretty sure they go for like 60k$ or something.

Thanks for this. I'm planning on using this video game in my English 11 classes next year, having students write additional chapters, inventing new characters, settings, etc. To the phones-in-class debate, students now use their phones to produce work, so of course, they're still getting notifications and texts etc. I do insist there's no game playing.

You realize its Jefferson after Max wakes up from her vision. he says a line "I can frame any of you in a dark corner and capture you in a moment of deseparation" something like that. Also Jefferson is the only adult at the Vortex Party.
The game pulled a Heavy Rain throwing the player off regarding the villain (we think its Nathan since Chloe was hunting him down after finding Rachel etc)
