- This week we sadly lost a legendary saxophonist, composer, educator, Wayne Shorter. Here is one of his iconic pop/rock solo's on Steely Dan's "Aja", from the same titled album. The solo is one simultaneously with Steve Gadd on drums, incredible stuff! Here is the transcription for tenor saxophone transposition.

Thank you for the many contributions to the saxophone, jazz and composition you made! And as Wayne said so beautifully, his definition of jazz was: "I dare you!". That's exactly what this solo, and so many other gems were. What's your favorite Wayne Shorter solo or composition? Leave it in the comments below!

Hi Jorre, for me it's Footprints from Adam's Apple. This is the art of making music by listening and leaving enough space.
Weather Report Black Market album
"Joy Ryder"!!!
Such beautiful aggression - without Wayne’s perfectly brilliant compliment, Gadd’s insane drums wouldn’t have hit so deeply.
may he rest in peace, grateful for the gifts he had that he shared with us ;)
Soprano or tenor Wayne was the best in my book .with 12 Grammys under his belt need i say more. Rest in peace brother. Thank you for the music
This is one my favorite moments in all of music. Awesome.
I might just be two pints 🍻 in at lunch but I actually think I might be able to learn this! Thank you for your work
Cool! Go for it 🔥
Thank you for music, Wayne. Rest in peace.
RIP Wayne
Genius.
Did you hear Steves stick click in the beginning. Too cool...😊 Listen again.

His solo in Juju is my favorite solo and Nefertiti is my favorite composition of his. I think he was more of a great composer than a soloist although some of his solos are more than great. I also loved his sound during his Miles Quintet years. A legend!
My favorite solo of his is WR’s Black Market on 8:30. His rhythmic counterpoint to Peter Ernskine is the stuff of legends. Both Aja and that showcase his strength at highlighting and showcasing the other musicians as a soloist. RIP Wayne Shorter
Nice to see it in black and white. I trust my ears!
R.I.P. Brother...
0:34 to 0:52 is maybe my favorite part of any song I've ever heard
Check out First Meditations by Trane
"...up on a hill, they've got time to burn; there's no return..."
My favorite part of the song. My second favorite comes towards the end of the song where it's the same riff. Superb. Best song by a great band... to me.
Love this solo.
Got to see Herbie Hancock the other night. He and his mates played a Wayne Shorter song...(Footsteps)
Wayne shorter legendary now Caldwell.rip
Less is more in jazz
The Wayne Shorter Aja solo is edited together from his multiple takes.
Hate to be a buzz kill, but I heard that this solo was actually patched together from several different takes. Still brilliant though
Caressed by god.
