- Starting out your game dev journey has never been easier. With the sheer amount of tools available today and all of the amazing communities online, it's just up to you to pick-and-choose your path.
Do you love a certain game? You might be able to mod it. If you can’t, you can still pick from a vast list of free game engines and try to remake the game. If you feel even more adventurous, you can even try to create a completely new fan game as an homage to those games you love. In this video, we're taking a look at some amazing stories of games that started as mods, remakes, and fan-made games.

Update: Thank you again to everyone who pointed out the typo in the original upload! This new version has it fixed. While the original video had the correct voiceover for the acronym MOBA, the graphic was incorrect.
I did one of my Master's papers on the cyclical nature of games inspiring mods that inspire games that inspire mods and so on. Feel free to check it out if you're interested in the history from Ms. Pac-Man to auto-battlers.
It is called "It's Mods All The Way Down" and can be found for free online. It is like 30 pages and very academic though, so probably not for everyone. Also, they miss some stuff in this video like Neichus's reign on DotA-Allstars and other stuff. I've interviewed lots of the devs who worked on DotA and there are so many untold stories...
I also do want to update it with some more auto-battler stuff and probably stuff on Magical Survival and Vampire Survivors too possibly. We'll see though since it was a lot of work already.

@@3333218 : My Master's was in Digital Media and Design at UConn. My thesis work was on physical-digital hybrid tabletop games using NFC/RFID technology. Plus, I studied the rise of the auto-battler genre.
I don't know how, but like half a year ago I searched what games were made with MonoGame and I saw your new video. And now I searched games that were made as mods and you again have new video on that.
Black Mesa is one of the best games I‘ve ever played. Also the soundtrack is gorgeous. The moment I reached Xen the first time and then the soundtrack starting, I had goosebumps. 100% recommended!
i was big time late to half life and played black mesa before HL:1 but i do definitely plan to play the original at some point
RPG Maker and other Game Editing Software is what i love, i dont know how to code and these editing engines have the potential to teach me how to code while making Mods and Fangames about stuff that i love about Video Games.

I am having this question since I started the development of a game, which now is very close to being completed and released. My question is about copyrighting. Do I have to copyright all the characters in our game including the protagonist and the villains?
I searched about this a lot on many websites. Some said that this process of copyrighting is done automatically when the game is released. Some said that I just need to put a copyright/trademark sign. Some said that I have to register somewhere to get my characters copyrighted.
But none of these answers seemed promising. Can you tell me the actual process of copyrighting? I would very much appreciate a reply. Thanks!

One of the best games I played when I was a kid, Undertale who started as an earthbound mod
One mention I would like add. For The Binding of Isaac Rebirth, I group of modders decided to make an expansion, the game had have two DLCs already by 2016 (Afterbirth and Afterbirth+) but at the end of that year they released what was known as "Antibirth", a full expansion mod pack which not only was praised over other mods but also said to be better than the Afterbirth+ expansion. Finally, last year The Binding of Isaac Repentance was released, new content, balancing, and including the whole content from Antibirth, making it officially into the game.
