    Paul, I am sorry that you’ve been under the weather - I’m 60 years old and know how that can take a bit to recover from. And despite that, you’ve put together another nice video that I enjoyed watching immensely. I hope you feel much better soon!! Know that I enjoy watching your videos as I sit and relax from a day of working in my own hobby shop. I was oh, so careful with my 1-2-3 blocks when I first started. Now (like you) I understand they are for the most part cheaply made and can be used for a variety of things. Cheers!!

    A lot of hard work. Coming along well, but as you said, so many operations take longer than desired.
    I hate when I get a birds nest.
    My bench grinder came with balancing rings on the wheels. This design is a circular groove and two curved nuts which are moved around to get the wheel balanced.

      Hi John, David defo liquidated his company and then worked as an employee for a bit but left a comment on my video making the trepanning tool saying something like "if I ever get better" so that's what flagged a concern to me. Re the new Government (dangerous subject alert!) I like a number of their policies but what they actually achieve time will tell. Building 1.5m dwellings in max 5 years, even with planning reform, is a big ask. We'll have to nearly double the current rate of building, and that's best case if building ramps up immediately without any delay. Cheers Paul

      Hiya Kimber, it is kinda medical politics really because all this public services stuff is kicked about in the press and Parliament whereas if it was pure commercial then the model is just much simpler. But our new Government has a slogan "country first, party second" so we'll see how long that lasts. If they can work to that, regardless who we vote for, I think we will all be very pleased. We wrote to my Mums outgoing MP, Penny Mourdant, to thank her for helping us with the LPA. I really don't think doing something like this would be possible here so all is not lost up there!!

    Hi Paul,, interesting project. I'm now 77 and still playing catchup on my 'to-do' list!
    I would appreciate a bit more in depth background on the theory of the balancing, the difference between static and dynamic particularly please. I am guessing static is only a starting point? Very nice engineering, kudos.

    • @HaxbyShed
      @HaxbyShed  Месяц назад +1

      Hi Seapy, you saw me do a static balance there. If the rotating body was long like a crank shaft it could be in static balance but if the static balance was achieved by opposing weight displaced along the shaft it would start a rocking motion as it spun up. A dynamic balancer has weight sensors (transducers) on the bearing point at each end and checks for changes in bearing load as the crank turns through 360 (indicating a rocking motion). The dynamic effect is small if the rotating shaft is short and/or the centre of mass is thin because the rocking moment/forces are limited. The further from the rotating axis the more the effect of the weight. The grinding wheel is only 1/2 inch wide so I imagine that the dynamic moment would (only) come from variations in thickness of the wheel. I don't have any way to dynamically balance but you can make quite simple jigs actually (refer to RUclips), or buy an expensive machine. I hope that all makes sense. Cheers

  • @bkoholliston
    @bkoholliston Месяц назад

    I just ignore the threads in 123 blocks. Make some cross pins about 3/4 to 7/8" long at the smallest block hole diameter that have a threaded cross hole in the middle (1/4-20 here in the States, maybe 6mm for you) and you can construct any thing you want with some standard screws and the blocks. Add some larger fender washers on the heads if the screw heads are too small.

    • @HaxbyShed
      @HaxbyShed  Месяц назад +1

      Hiya, thanks yes I'll have to explore how best to use the blocks. They are so cheap, in the limit I could even sacrifice one or two by adapting them for a specific job. Cheers

    I dont know anything about anything but on the few surface grinders i've been around (2) they were always balanced by drilling out little divots of material on the wheel itself. This is clearly nicer but im too lazy for that :-)

    • @HaxbyShed
      @HaxbyShed  Месяц назад +1

      Hi Josh, yes I have seen RUclips videos with owners drilling little divots in the stone to balance the whole assembly (wheel and carrier). I just feel this is a bit neater but I'm sure the divot drilling is fine too. Cheers

  • @SeanBZA
    @SeanBZA Месяц назад

    Politics, coming from poly, meaning many, and ticks, vlood suckers. Glad you are feeling better, and that balance wheel is looking good, a little polish and your wheel will be nearly perfect balance wise as well, though it will never be able to be changed without a rebalance, and you probably will be grinding off bits of grubscrew rather than putting in mass. once static you will probably still need a dynamic balance, so will move the length the screws project , or just get 2 different length grubscrews and use them as masspieces.

    • @HaxbyShed
      @HaxbyShed  Месяц назад +1

      Hi Sean, thanks. I've found the wheel will roll on the balancing stand with just the slightest out of balance weight - just a few grams. It's surprising how sensitive it is. Cheers

  • @tates11
    @tates11 Месяц назад

    Sorry to be a pain but in all the tool rooms I have worked in, nobody balances such small grinding wheels. They have such a small mass that any out of balance is so small that it causes no problems. I will add that the tapered arbor is never removed from the machine. When changing wheels the large thin nut is removed and the wheel changed. This protects the machine tapered spindle. The nut is either one with 3 equispaced weights permanently locked or a simple threaded disc with 2 holes for a pin spanner. Once a wheel of that size is dressed any out of balance will not show on the workpiece. Remember the wheel spends most of it's life smaller than when new so any out of balance becomes negligible anyway. Nice job so far on the ring but important for viewers to know it is not essential.

    • @HaxbyShed
      @HaxbyShed  Месяц назад

      Hi Tates11, you may well be right that it is not necessary to balance a small wheel like that but it gave me a nice little project. 😁 You will see in later vid that, after dressing, it took a couple of 6mm grub screws to achieve static balance. The spindle on that machine is not tapered, the stone carrier slides onto a plan shaft and is clamped with a LH threaded nut. Cheers Paul

    • @tates11
      @tates11 Месяц назад

      @@HaxbyShed The stone carrier 'with the parallel bore in your case' will usually be left on the machine spindle with just the L/H disc nut removed. As you say the wheel still has to be dressed unbalanced before balancing. Perhaps the out of balance was caused by the two countersunk screws, perhaps 3 would be the minimum to keep things relatively balanced. How thick is the wall of the balancing ring? it seems that there is a lot of wheel that can't now be used at the center.

    • @joshwalker5605
      @joshwalker5605 Месяц назад +1

      maybe it didnt cause any problems on yours but for a tiny little grinder like this it'll absolutely cause ugly surface finish.
