Rory Williams (aka The Last Centurion) - Total Badass

I loved this for the shear contrast of how Rory started out the series as a total geek, and here he gets to have one of the most badass scenes ever shown in Doctor Who.
"Amy's Boys: One is an utterly fearless immortal badass who has lived for thousand of years... and the other is the Doctor."
He isn't immortal though.
@@ursosexmachina
He was made out of plastic once !
Paradoxe : Plastic can be broken and/or melted.
@@lezacojo I already know that...
Rory survived being erased from time, he lived for 2000 years, and he has centurion training with, again, thousands of years of traveling!!!
He’s come back from the dead multiple times
Who else wants a Separate Series detailing everything Rory learned and did during those 2000 years?
He probably just slept lmao

I wish they did more with "The Last Centurion" because it made Rory into an absolute badass.

Nick Green *Looks bloody awesome.
There, fixed it for you
He was older than the doctor by about 900-1100 years during season 6+7
Rory overall could have had more moments like this.
Honestly, he was a great addition anyway and I loved almost every bid of his screen time in this season.
That’s what you call character growth.
He blew up an entire fleet of cybermen just to prove a point....I aspire to be this level of petty
You call it "petty", the rest of us call it "BADASS!!"
@@TheAKgunner they don't have to be mutually exclusive.
@@spiderclanx Why do you say they are?
@@TheAKgunner because that is what you said?
This is much grander than being petty. At that moment, nothing could stop Rory from finding Amy and Melody. Right then, he and the Doctor would shatter entire worlds to find them
I love Amy's lines here because at first you think she's talking about the Doctor but it turns out her main source of hope is her husband, and that's just sweet.
Idk I liked it when it came out, but in hind sight, it feels to me like something that's clunkily written to be a fake out. It feels weird to me that she'd ever refer to him as the last of his kind (his kind being... Roman centurions? Like, the last centurion is a cool name for us as fans to call him, but in universe, it doesn't feel right to me)
EDIT: But to be clear, I'm not saying it's bad or that you shouldn't enjoy it. I think you absolutely should enjoy it, that's awesome that you do! I just wish I bought it more.
Tbf the way she speaks sometimes i cant blame him for thinking she was speaking of the doctor
@@saeedrazavi4428 tbh at the time this came out me and my friends were CERTAIN she was originally referring to the doctor until Rory walked on screen. We cheered 🎉
She was honestly awful to Rory sometimes, particularly early on. I don't understand why he put up with her.

When I took the "Which Doctor Who Companion are you?" quiz, my friends laughed that I had gotten Rory. They stopped laughing after this episode.
This episode and let’s not forget about the pandorica episode where he carried the box out of flames during the blits
@@lostinmythoughts5279 Like the absolutely devoted husband and badass he is.
He’s the ideal man.
Part healer, part warrior
Loyal and brave.
And with everything he’s done and accomplished, he’s very humble too.
I mean he’s a lot older than the doctor for season 6+7, and did something so brave it rivals the doctor. (Standing guard outside the Pandorica for 1800 years)
Those sort of hero credentials usually belong to the star of the show.
After reading your comment I decided to try that quiz myself. Took three different ones and they all came up "Rose". Now I'm going to have to find some episodes with her 'cause apparently she only appeared in the big gap between my times watching the show.
Apparently, I'm Peri, don't know how that describes me, 'cause she was before my time.
Rory's character growth is astounding.
When you can be mistaken for the doctor, you know your doing badassery right 😂
I also really like how Rory actually fights with Roman techniques and proper Roman guard positions. The filmmakers weren't messing about when they made this storyline
The Doctor sitting in his TARDIS with a cup of tea and jammy dodgers, waits for their response - they don't answer, he let's out a sigh and flicks his sonic, presses a button - explosion - drinks his tea..
"my lovely spot"
He's sat on a lawn chair at the door, watching the fireworks
River Song made a Dalek beg for mercy. She killed it because that was more merciful than siccing her dad on it.
On the subject, the real reason Daleks even know the word "mercy" is that they knew Rory was out there and they weren't too proud to learn how to beg.
What doesn't kill Rory only makes him stronger. What does kill him ALSO makes him stronger.
The Master cheats Death. Rory doesn't have to because Death knows what happens to anyone who tries stop Rory from getting back to Amy.
So what yer saying is, he taught Chuck Norris everything he knows.
@@barongorn Fix'd, thaught Chuck Norris everything Chuck Norris knows, there's a wee but pretty crucial difference ;)
That is the literal perfect description of Rory
Fun thought. Thou they know the word Mercy because Devros said it to the Doctor when he was but a wee lad going to die.
I dont care this comment is a year old. We have never seen Chuck Norris and Rory in the same place so.... Rory is Chuck Norris confirmed?
Note: They weren't scrambling like that because of the Doctor's explosions. They only knew about ONE intruder at that point. Whatever Rory did to get into that room, it had them panicked and ready to listen. And you'll notice - his right arm is covered by that cape. Along with whatever he was holding.
The thing is: Cybermen are literally unable to panic.
@@ThePhantomLK Not panic, but they have similar mental processes of self preservation
Arcane Warrior kinda like lizardfolk in D&D. They do not know fear but they understand danger. They only value friendship in the sense that it is useful or convenient once that stops they won’t hesitate to abandon their so called “friends.” Only difference is that the cyber men see themselves as the peak of evolution, getting help from an inferior species would be like admitting that they are not the best at everyone.
@@connorgrynol9021 I agree save for one point. Cybermen don't believe that they are inherently superior in every situation; they merely believe that their method is the best way to *become* superior. Unlike Daleks, they are capable of realising that a threat is more effective than they are... Until they adapt and Upgrade to meet the challenge, of course.
Now I have to re-watch this because I'm wondering if this is the origin of Handles.
I'm sorry, but "Would you like me to repeat the question?" is such a raw line for this situation, and I love it!
Honestly, I like all these moments in which they faked out Amy being in love with the Doctor.
Because it showed that, to her, Rory is at least as amazing as the Doctor.
She did try to kiss(and maybe fuck) Doctor that time tho...
@@PrimordialNyx she would not have been the first mother to sleep with her daughter's lover
@@PrimordialNyx it was a result of trauma, even the Doctor points that out to Rory.
Amy has a husband and a sorta-boyfriend. Simple :p
"Oh don't give me those blank looks." Only Rory could have delivered that line... that well. Damn!
Arthur Darvill would have made an awesome one-off doctor if he wasn't Rory. But we got him as the Last Centurion so I ain't complaining.
Imagine Rory, 5 minutes before delivering the line, standing in front of the door, practicing that line before taking a deep breath and stepping inside
I would bet that took at least two takes because he had to laugh the first time.
This is the moment to me, When Rory above all others in this episode, Joined the "I will fuck you up" crew of The Doctor's, standing with Rose, Mickey, and Jack.
Don't forget it's founding members Leeta and Ace.

That look on Rorys face. He is DONE with patience, he is DONE with taking his time. He is DONE with delays. WHERE IS HIS WIFE!
If anyone still has doubts that Rory is the biggest badass in the Doctor Who franchise I'd like to remind you that when faced with a creature that was basically the personification of fear that could manipulate one's vision all it could show him was exit doors. You might say it's because he had nothing that he believed in. I say the representation of fear was begging him to leave
"Fuck this guy could destroy the universe while starring down the greatest creatures of the universe for his wife, abort ABORT !"
The representation of fear looked into his soul, his mind, and all it saw was that he had already feared everything, to the point in which he had nothing left to fear. The representation of fear started to fear and respect him, so it begged him to leave.

This in my view shows exactly what the human companions are meant to be. Useful, powerful...and able to do what the Doctor cannot or will not. They can love and die...but they can also kill and evoke fear. Rory was the best of them because at the end, he was capable of operating on a level close to the Doctor.

And this is why Rory is my favourite companion
Rory is amazing. because he's badass? no, because he is such an incredible badass that stared down a legion of cybermen with a skirt and a sword, and didn't flinch, he waited 2000 years to keep the woman he loved safe, and he's come back from the big bang and being erased from existance.
But he's all that and still such an adorable dork.
Does anyone else remember when Rory was just a comic relief nurse?
Talk about a glow up
Don't take this the wrong way. Like Ron Stoppable did years earlier in Kim Possible, Rory became the man he needed to be to protect his beloved.
@@cindydott452 Absolutely right! Although, on some level, both were always strong. You don't become a nurse because you're a light weight. Yeah, I know a number of nurses.
Eh no not really. Rory has always been a bad ass. On his first trip with the Doctor he told him off 'you make people want to impress you. You have no idea how dangerous you make people to themselves when you're around' and that was after he saw the Doctor bring back aliens to the planet just to tell them off, remind him of how danger he was and to 'run'. He attempted to fight off a vampire with half a broom stick to save Amy. He got killed in the first place saving the Doctor's life. In his first episode, he was the only one smart enough to realize what was going on and the aliens invading. The Doctor got that info from him. Rory has always been a lot more than just comic relief.
I love the fact that Rory broke out the garb for this :D
technically he would've had to make it, or buy it.
his original garb vanished in the reset.
@@zwordsman no, he had it in the Christmas special after that, they were on honeymoon and he was dressed as the centurion.
@@headsgrowback1 Yeah, all of that stuff came from Amy's house originally. (The Roman's, the dress up costumes, everything about the Doctor.) Amy and Rory had gone to a costume party at some point.
This doesn’t look like dress-up stuff to me. Has anyone considered that there is a better than even chance that the Doctor had full centurion gear in his wardrobe already? All he had to do was give it to Rory.
@@talyar04 There's a better than even chance that it's Rory's own kit - the stuff he "lost" while on campaign.
"Alright, 12th legion, 12th legion.... AHH, North Africa, my you got around didn't you? Not to worry Rory, I promise I won't steal a centurion's armor for you.... You're going to steal a centurion's armor *from* you."
Every time I watch this, I try to imagine what the Doctor told Rory to do to pull this off, but I can't do it. Rory seems to know that the Doctor was going to blow up all those cyber ships based on the complete lack of expression on his face when it happens, but I can't imagine the Doctor saying that he was going to do that.
That's kinda the point, and the Doctor's message. He's gone off the rails and is dangerous and unpredictable right now. "You know those normal rules I operate under? The rules which are the only reason you lot even exist, and weren't wiped out long ago? Rules like mercy and compassion? I'm not following those rules right at the moment. Now are you going to tell us what we want to know, or do you want to find out what you lose next?"
the moment just before rory bursts in on the cybermen, you hear them scrambling to respond, sealing deck levels and sending legions after him. his advance through the ship isn't even slowed, occasionally clearing decks before the alert to seal them is finished.
rory and the doctor went in guns blazing, and while rory may not have known exactly what the doctor was going to do, he knew it was going to be bold, loud and flashy as hell, and with 2000 years to gain some maturity, rory's not exactly going to be shocked no matter what wacky things the doctor does.
@@Yal_Rathol except this isn't that Rory. This is the one after the universe was reset so he wouldn't have gone through all that.

I remember watching that episode with a group of friends and we were all cheering and having a grand old time together. In those days a new episode of Dr. Who was an event that we planned for and gathered around, and even changed our plans to be able to see it as soon as possible. Those stories gave us chills and had us all jumping with excitement at the adventures onscreen. It was so different than these dark times.

Pretty much Rory’s best scene ever 😂
One of, if not the most badass entrance to any TV show ever!!!
This is the first time in the history of DOCTOR WHO that we seen the Doctor TICKED OFF, AND UNLEASHED, and Rory at his BEST.
Never saw the scene where the Fifth Doctor dug a hunk of gold directly into a Cyberman's respirator after the death of his Companion, Adric?
I love that the message can be: The explosion, just to give Rory more gravitas and leverage in asking the question.
"Would you like me to repeat the question?" as in, knowing the Cybermen wouldn't give an answer so The Doctor is telling them to answer.
Or "Would you like _me_ to repeat the question?" as in, if you won't answer to Rory, you'll answer to me
Early on Rory showed that the Dr and all the other time and space craziness didn't intimidate him and that he viewed it through the lens of how it affected Her very good character development to bring him on a believable character arc from there to here
Anyone noticed that Rory never blinked while talking to the Cybermen?
Badasses have no time to blink.

The way they add the boom effect to Rory's voice really shows how pissed he is here
He is on the verge of losing everything and he isnt just gonna take that sitting down
He is going to hunt the people who took his family from him to the ends of the universe

Fantastic moment. Amy, Rory and the Doctor were the best for me. But back in the day I always loved Second, Jamie and Victoria - maybe it's a good dynamic to have on the TARDIS.
Still utterly awesome. Rory standing in front of a phalanx of Cybermen, armed only with a sword, and basically condemns them to death. The phrase 'Balls of steel' comes to mind here. One thing, though: I always wondered how Rory got on the ship - did the TARDIS land, and drop him off, or has he got River Song's Vortex Manipulator? I love the
"Oh, don't give me those blank looks!" line, and the Cybership design, an homage to the ships from the 1968 story 'The Invasion'.
Rory was on level 11, they sealed 12, 13, 14, then he is alright in level 15 right after they say 14 is sealed, so I think he probably using the vortex manipulator, but how did he get it? River how has one from a time agent which was still on the wrist 😂 love the line I said OFF the wrist 🤣 but the doctor wouldn’t be able to give it to him, so I think it might just be using the cyber tech against they selves, maybe just transport in different level but honestly this had me think this for a while, but they are explosions happen before he gets to the levels, which confuses me as I’m like is this the cybermen attacking damaging their own ship or is it Rory using bombs? 🤔 I’ll have to say a teleporter
When Dr.Who was revitalized and watchable.
Now it's just tragic.
Every doctor had ups and downs.
Quite possible the best scene/arc of Dr who ever. I came from terrible aliens defeated by stairs and eccentric folk, to this genius. Defo the best Dr.
There is not really genius behind constructing a scene to make a character look badass.
Wait... if Rory is 2000 and some years old... THAT MAKES HIM OLDER THEN THE FUCKING DOCTOR!!! As Matt Smith’s doctor he was only 1,200!!!
The Doctor lies about his age. Thanks to the centuries John Hurt spent fighting the Time War on top of the 8 other incarnations before him, the Doctor is much older than Ecclestone, Tennant and Smith pretended to be. I'm not sure why Ecclestone lied about his age - maybe he restarted with Hurt to keep the 8 Classic Doctor's separate from the Time War although I don't think the war lasted long enough to cover all 900 years - but Tennant was an egotist so of course he'd want to seem young by Time Lord standards and Smith just went with the flow after he regenerated. Capaldi was more upfront about how ancient the Doctor actually is.
Amy and Rory are both older than him. She was also kept in a box as long as Rory was the centurion. Only right given that they are his father and mother in law. who should always be older than their son in law.
I love that they made it sound like she was talking about The Doctor only to pull a major bait and switch at the end.
"Oh, don't give me those blank looks!" Took me a while to get my breath back after that.
I love how this scene was set up and played out. In the final part of the clip, where Rory threatens the Cyber Legion and they don't dare attack him, sort of thinking "what could be worse than this?". Then the realize they've got to think about standing up to Rory _and_ the Doctor, both! 🤖😲
