- Some Plain Bob Maximus from Southwell Minster.
An interesting church, which is very spacious inside. The twelve bells are housed in the central tower (unlike places like St Paul's Cathedral, London and York Minster), and are anti-clockwise. They are the only anti-clockwise twelve in the world, and go beautifully. There is also a flat sixth, which you can see outside the ringing circle (so it doesn't get in the way).
Plain Bob Maximus takes a looooong time to ring, and this is only a short section of it! Glad I managed to escape...
Oh, and by the way, it is pronounced "Southall" and not "South Well" :-P
I love the way only ringers know how to get through the door at 0:38. 'RING QUEENS ON SIX'!
Same as Eaten Socon from my last visit. St Neots was queens on 4.
You pronounce Southwark in Greater London the same way you pronounce the county Suffolk
@Juneaugold123 Near enough! I just get fed up of people pronouncing it wrong, so had to make the point. I went to school in Swanwick, which has a similar principle in the pronunciation: Swan-ick.
Visited the Minster last year, but they werent ringing
Nice sounding, but the trebles dont seem to be too audible over the big bells? And anti-clockwise, how interesting!!
Werent these once in a Merton-type ringing chamber as well?!?!
It's "Suthall" actually.
trust my dad to be on the tenor...
It is SOUTH WELL full stop, there is no U in it.
@Juneaugold123
Iam a Southwellian and can assure you the correct pronuciation is South-well not Suthall!!
I really like these though 5 years ago I found the anti-clockwise-ness a bit confusing! A super 12 and not a ring that's often given the credit for being good.
Access seems to be similar to St Alban's Abbey at least they are not in a corner.
yes these were my first ring on 12 bells, thought they were great!
I like these. nice and musical. Look nice to rig aswell. Beautiful place and a lovely ringing chamber!
