I tried this method today at my local post office and it worked perfectly, no questions asked. The guy looked at me a little funny (in a "how do you know what that is" sort of way) , but didn't say anything. $1.36 for two letters with one DVD in them each. Thanks a bunch!
I always use the non machinable stamps (has a butterfly on it and says non machinable) and write on envelope non machinable + do no bend. About one in 50 still gets broke by Post Office. I never take them there, just put in mailbox to be picked up. The non machinable stamp in 71 cents for 1 ounce. Brown 6x9 envelope, a layer of bubble wrap and cd in sleeve comes to 1 ounce.
I am a mailman in the Chicago suburbs. The website "DVD" ,owned by netflix, does the exact same thing, without a sleeve. I don't see why a clerk would give you any problems.
I Have discovered the same thing having mailed quite a few cds. Anyhow I have not been so lucky as to get a knowledgeable person. You will need patients when going to the post office and a non machinable stamp is recommended. Good luck everyone it is a free tip to share. Thank you and it confirms my actions.
+Dan Leahy Thanks for commenting Dan. Hopefully you will be able to find a knowledgeable person. If the person at the USPS front desk has been telling their customers with the wrong interpretation, the USPS person at the front desk is not likely to change their non-machinable charge interpretation unless told by there boss.
thanks much for the video, i have experienced the same many times but have trained our local post office so they now understand. I also find that even with the non-machinable stamp, often it is machined and the contents break. I have been told by some clerks that EVERYTHING is machined, no exceptions and others say that some do not if stamped - love to know the real answer to that!
I have had a similar issue where I payed the extra for the non-machinable rate and my DVD's were delivered to the recipient cracked like they went through the rollers on the machine:( So I sent the DVDs again with success.
So glad I found this video! I was getting so frustrated. Can someone explain how to get a non machineable stamp. Is it something you can purchase at your local post office? I am calling those 2 phone numbers someone recommended.

Hi Ed,
Unfortunately many USPS clerks are confused on the description of a rigid first class envelope.
there is a non-machinable stamp now for 1 ounce and if it's heavoer just add more stamps until a certain weight limit.
Hi Raymond,
Thanks for the update.
