FREEDOM! This is our first year of homeschool. Our oldest was in public school for K and 1st and our younger 3 are kindergarten age. Let me just say that the freedom I felt after taking our oldest out of public school is amazing. In this season I don’t believe or feel that a co-op is for us but hearing all of the great things that a co-op can be to a homeschool family is very helpful, so thank you! Like you, I also feel that God has something amazing in store. We just stepped out in faith because God spoke homeschool to us, and here we are full of joy and free as can be! ❤️

It has its place but not for us. I’ve been there and hear your heart! With multiple autoimmune diseases too I just can’t. ❤️ field trip or just park or fellowship time or once a month tea time with friends is enough for us.

I'm struggling over here! I love the idea of joining a homeschool co-op and am very interested in the classical method, but I don't know if it's worth it at the moment. My babies are only 4 & 7 and I feel like they aren't there yet :(

I am sitting here listening to you and this was me completely last summer! I felt drained after our day at co op and thought I would not join this year. I ended up joining again because i felt i wanted my kids to have the same interaction as all their friends and did not want them to feel left out...however I am completley regretting it and after praying much about it, by God's grace I will not join next year. I have 3 kiddos, kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades.

We've done a few different coops over the years and I agree with everything you've said! Great experience, met wonderful families and my kids LOVED it, but it was an extra commitment and pressure. I've started a field trip coop. It is very, very laid back. We just post field trips on Meetup and families only RSVP if they're coming. No commitment. No fees unless the field trip requires it and then I collect the money right in front of the location right before walking in. (Almost every place gives us the school discounts if we make one payment). This has worked very well for us and we now have over 60 families in it. Enjoy your new freedom!

I've never been part of a co-op and honestly have not joined one for the reasons you stated for quiting. It would be a commitment and I know I would give it all my energy. Plus my kids are still very young (6,3,1) and I can't see it being worth the extra time it would take from our daily routine. Thank you for this. I feel confident enough to stand on schooling from home but yes the question gets asked a lot from outsiders.

We have taken part in various homeschool coops throughout the years. Some are definitely more high maintenance than others. I appreciate your transparency in saying one of your reasons for joining was because without it you didn’t feel sure you were “doing enough” etc and you could explain to people that you were also in a coop. I think this helps us feel more “comfortable” when “defending ourselves” in public school circles or with family etc... I can say that was also part of my motive in years past, and I’m glad that we’ve been doing this long enough now to let that need for outside affirmation/“security” go! I also found we were doubling up on a lot of things we were already doing. At the end of the day, I think my kids get enough interaction from various activities they participate in/church etc, and I enjoy our school year so much more when I can pray, listen to Holy Spirit, think about my kiddos’ individual interests/abilities and then make choices based on those things that are right for US. ❤️🙌🏼🙌🏼

Seasons are just that...they come and go and may we be sensitive to what the Lord has for us in each transition. COMPLETE SURRENDER and reliance on Him ALONE! He is for us and is BETTER than anything we find false security in. Anticipation and expectation in His Work is exhilarating 🙌🙌

Thank you!!! We've tried co-ops and it always fails. We stop prioritizing our homeschool and get behind and then drop fun stuff at home and school becomes a burden. This year, NOPE. We will stay home Monday-friday so we can do all those fun, hands on projects and crafts to make school fun. And, they have neighborhood friends, and church, so I'm good with it. You're doing good and if you feel free, that's good!

We have really enjoyed co-op in the past. The co-op was a few hours weekly for 12 weeks, but it left me feeling drained. I definitely have used co-op as a buffer to help people accept that we homeschool. Like you, I would say, "We homeschool, BUT we also go to co-op". As if me educating my children wasn't enough. It is enough. Thank you for showing me that I am not alone in feeling like this.

I love this! Thanks for your encouraging words. In the past, we’ve attended a university model school - private school 2 days a week, homeschool 3. We were hoping to join Classical Conversations in the fall, but because we have a “large” (ish) family we were having a hard time finding a local group with enough openings for all our kids. Then the whole world shut down so we took it as a final sign that this year we’re supposed to fly solo for now. I’ve already gained so much confidence while making our plans - it IS very freeing!

I found this video so refreshing! It confirmed a lot of things for me. I have three young kiddos and though I generally had a good experience at co-op, I felt like it drained me. I enjoyed it at the beginning of my homeschool experience, but next year is our 4th year and I am feeling more confident in myself. I feel more able to pick and choose our own curriculum snd set our own routines that are life-giving for our specific family. Giving up co-op will allow us to drop to a 4 day school week with the 5th day for nature study, meeting friends, or field trips. To me, those things fill us up more than co-op. We are also a family that loves being outdoors also, and my husband works a nice -traditional schedule so he is often around in the week. I hated dragging everybody to co-op when Daddy was home! Thank you again for sharing your heart.

This was so encouraging to me. We left CC 2 years ago because I had some medical issues and then very shortly after found out I was pregnant with a miracle baby. We had to stop, I felt so exhausted and burdened. We were more depleted than fulfilled. It has been a hard 2 years readjusting and figuring if I can do this alone. I too used it as a crutch. But I feel like this year I am ready to give it my all. Thank you ❤️

We have been apart of an awesome co-op that sounds similar to yours. We meet for 12 week semesters. The parents need to volunteer for jobs, but they usually have mentors lined up so we don't have to teach! We have been apart of it for 3 years now (since we started homeschooling). I have found a homeschooling mom tribe through this co op and my girls have flourished. My oldest has made some sweet friends and figured out some new things she's interested in such as art, theater and dance. My middle has come out of her shell and started talking to friends. But I have been so uneasy about this year. The biggest reason is covid and how unsettled things are. Some of the things you mentioned though as your reasoning are also things that resonate with me. I'm going to be praying about our co op. Part of me wants to hold on and just do one class, but even my oldest said "it's ok if we don't do co op this year." That is a big thing in my book. This extra time at home with Covid has been a blessing. We've been talking of moving for a couple years and she is finally open to the idea. Thanks for sharing this.

I agree with everything. I’m in the same boat you were probably in a year ago with co-op. So I think this year will be our last (Covid pending). When our co-op was shut down, I was also excited. I feel like I had so much more time and freedom... which is what homeschooling is suppose to give me. I love our co-op. It definitely has its time and place! I also was never homeschooled or been around it. Excited for you! Have fun this year!!!

Love this! We were part of various co-ops over the years and while we absolutely loved the fellowship and experiences they offered, I found myself dragging at the end of the day, and eventually dreading going for unexplained reasons. My best friend and I started our own last year, and haven't invited others to join us yet, because I think we both needed to step back and find a way to give our kids opportunities without the pressure. It has been amazing and I look forward to picking that back up with her this coming school year. Thanks for sharing your heart and experience. 💜

We are currently in a co-op but we had taken a break a few years ago. We only took a year off but I think I needed it. It definitely drains me so I make plans for that. I make sure dinner is easy, my kids and hubby know I have to come home and chill for the rest of the afternoon and I don't do any school work that day. What we do at co-op is plenty for the day. We have really loved co-op and it has helped me feel confident in teaching other people's kids. One thing I love about ours is we only meet the first 3 weeks of each month. I like to have the off weeks. Then when we go back I'm ready and refreshed. That has helped me a lot. And I love how the other families feel a lot like family to us. We are so supportive of each other and what goes on in our personal lives. It's a very special thing to be part of.
I also feel if you know you need a break you should take it. We have different seasons in life and our needs change.
We have been in different types of co-ops. We were in a country study one with 3 other families and met once a month. We alternated hosting and the hosting family picked the country. Then we all brought projects or lapbooks or coloring pages and food. We let each family decide how much or how little they did for the project. It was wonderful and great to have the dad's there too. We also were in a once a month co-op and that was fun. It was all fun classes like big class or Lego class or camping class or princess class. That was great too. And we have in the past been in a history one where we did very similar to the country study but it was in the day time.

Great video. We are about to start our 20th (gulp) year of homeschool. Our youngest, entering 7th grade, is our last child at home. I have had a love/not love relationship with co-ops over the years. I totally agree there are so many blessings associated with co-ops - it's comforting and reassuring to be part of a tribe or community!! We did half day co-op last year and are once again ducking out for this coming year. (Honestly, I'm not gambling needing to zoom all our co-op classes this year.). Also, I just LOVE having five full days of time here at home to spend anyway we want to! Co-op wasn't just attending....it was also preparing for it, which involved "stuffing" our regular curriculum into four days. My husband constantly pointed out to me that although I said I loved our co-op, I complained about gearing up for it for days before it happened. :-(. I didn't WANT to be grumpy about it, because I really did enjoy being with our friends there, but I constantly felt conflicted about it. I "love" it, but it feels like an imposition in my week???? I feel PERFECTLY okay about being "selfish" with my weeks....attending Bible study, scheduling playdates (hey look! Socialization!), and not having to add preparing for co-op to my daily schedule. YOU HAVE DONE A FINE THING. It's okay. You know what? I love them up until about 4th grade. After that, I love being here and simplifying. It feels SO GOOD and I don't miss the guilt one bit.

We have done all sorts of things as homeschoolers. All had benefits. Just gotta find what works best for your family; for you and for your kids. Spot on! My youngest is now at a homeschool "school" that is 2 full days a week in person; with a full academic workload (to do at home). We pay to send him and it is taught by wonderful teachers (all by homeschooling moms). It is not cheap but it is great experience for kids who want more of a school experience (with way more flexibility) & none of the government impositions. It is great. So happy we found it. 🙂

We were part of a homeschool coop when we first startled homeschooling. It was such a great resource and a way to connect with other homeschool families. We met in the morning and split up the teaching of classes, then all went to the park to eat lunch and the kids played. Last year we chose not to continue because a lot of my kid’s friends left and the teaching became to much for me. It was so sad to end and I really miss the amazing moms, but I love the freedom I have now to not be committed to anything.

Our season of "co-op" or "community" as what we were doing calls it, is over as well. I was like you, drained. We met on Fridays. By the time it was over, it took me the rest of the weekend to "recover." I made a good friend but mostly I just saw the people there on community day. No talking really outside of it......I almost felt like I was "buying" friendship at times. They people weren't mean at all but I felt at times like I never "clicked" or "fit in." What is so funny is that is what my daughter says too. With 3 children & one being under 2, it was just too much.

This is beautiful Jamie. Thank you for sharing your heart! I totally get what you mean. We live in Australia, and co-ops are not really around much here. There are homeschooling groups that catch up, but for fun activities not educational activities. We tried being part of one of these groups, but our season there was very short. And that is ok, because I want to be where God wants me, wants my family, to be. And if that is not part of a “homeschooling group” I’m good with that. I love your butterfly analogy 🦋🧡 so good!

Fly away do great things! Great video. I think I may have some of the same fears you had when you started co-op. We don’t have a co op but will be joining a Montessori charter That works with homeschoolers. Biggest reason is to feel my oldest social cup and a little bit for me. But it’s great you have recognized that you can decide that this just isn’t working right now and able to be confident in moving on. I’m sure you all will have great memories. It’s better to leave before the party ends😉😊. Looking forward to more of your videos.

I totally get it! I feel the same way. My kids love co op and I love all the parents there but I am just exhausted by the time it is done! Getting out of the house with 4 kids early in the morning is exhausting too. We get there and I am ready to leave right away because it is so much work so early! It is also a committment and we like to go do things and have extended weekends but with co op n Thursdays it is hard to do.

Yes! I understand! That is so great that you have found your co-op "home!" We love our co-op as well...but this season I just don't have as much to give in that department. I am feeling lead in other directions! My boys see their friends probably more when co-op is on break so it all works put for us! 😍🤗

I could have made this video. It is 100% my experience. I was one who had thought at one point, why isn't everyone in a co-op and then all of the sudden I wanted a break. My break didn't work out in the sense that I took the spring session off and then quarentine hit. We are still locked down as far as church goes in my state and so I am hopeful for those bible study mornings, but I am looking forward to less stress of preparing a class for others and one more day given to devote our homeschool. It doesn't mean forever for me either. But I just needed a breather!

I don't need co op I need play club lol, just a meetup every other week or so and just snack and play. Give advice, encourage moms and move on. It's a lot to teach my kids without creating a lesson for a bunch of other kiddos. I'm new to this but that's what I feel like homeschool kiddos need. But I was also the mom who was not a fan of mom groups with too much of a plan 😬😬😬

I had planned on joining a co-op this coming year but with all this covid-19 hysteria there are already contingency plans being emailed out with plan A, B and C and I'm just not sure if its gonna be worth it this year... especially since we will be welcoming baby #7 this Dec and I know we were already gonna miss some due to that. We had been a part of a hybrid school the last 3 years and this will be our first year going solo, so I think I was kinda using co-op as a crutch... but this video speaks right to where my heart already is and we havent even started yet 😜. Thanks for sharing your heart! And I agree with the comments... your hair is goals 😘

I do love our homeschool co op, Ive met some of my best friends there, but I do not want to teach, so if that changes then things might change. It is a huge commitment. Your kids are your biggest ministry. You made the right choice. But I'm still new this is my 3rd year coming up. Sidenote: I am requesting a messy bun tutorial and this hairstyle tutorial!!!

A co-op where you don't have to teach?! Oh wow! Ya, in our co-op that is not an option every mom teaches one class and helps in another with 1 free hour. It is so beauriful but it adds such a level of pressure that I can't handle this year! 🤗💕 It is all a good thing...just a different season!

Mama! DO NOT BE AFRIAD! You have got this! For us, socialization has NOT been an issue but rather a myth about homeschoolong that I fell for in the beginning! You will find that your kiddo will thrive! If he needs more, you will find a way! 5 years old?! Oh how I miss that age! You've got this, mama! Does your kiddo have any other siblings?
