  • The film "In the Footsteps of Wonhyo" depicts a 500 kilometer journey by retired Canadian journalist Tony MacGregor. MacGregor crossed the Korean Peninsula in an attempt to understand the awakening experience of the eccentric Korean monk Wonhyo. Wonhyo, perhaps the most beloved of all Korean Buddhist saints, walked across the peninsula in the seventh century and found enlightenment in a cave on the western side of the peninsula. MacGregor's journey, which involved staying at mountain monasteries and talking to monks, was the first in over 1.000 years to honor Wonhyo's accomplishment. Beautiful documentary! The scenes, the narration and the music all blend together so nicely! I'm surprised this doesn't have more views quite frankly. I currently reside in Korea and love visiting Buddhist temples in my free time. Thank you for giving me the chance to familiarize myself with Wonhyo. I'd known about him already but never took the time to really delve into his philosophy. I would love to go on a pilgrimage across the peninsula and follow in his footsteps like you did.

      Thank you ^^
Very happy to hear you liked it! It was an amazing experience filming it!
Also glad to hear you’re enjoying exploring Korean temples! The Kwan Um School of Zen in Korea has very clear teachings, so I’d recommend visiting Musangsa if you have time :)
      Enjoy Korea!

I live in an apartment. Videos of this sort take my mind to more places than that of just the nature that is portrayed. As, I type this, a neighbor is playing loud music, so I end up having to experience a divided, or even mulitipronged, perspective, and finding a way to inhale some peace with all those perspectives that are all over Humanity. So, I have to imagine how I integrate this. And, is this worse than drinking dirty rain water from a human skull? Funny how The World works. Thank you for the wonderful video.

One second of action accumulates and accumulates to become that person's life. If you realize the preciousness of that one second, your life becomes true.

Wow, Tony. Thank you for this film. Your rhythm of voice is to me like the steps of a pilgrim, slow, deliberate, mindful, and intention pure. I especially enjoyed the focus of walking as meditation, and awareness of the body, nothing more. The camera angles and photography went well together with the narration, I believe, and it was refreshing to be in so much nature and beauty as you traveled. I must admit, the question you asked the sunim at the end re-stimulated in me why I follow in The Plum Village tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh, however, regardless of my own path, The Chogye Order of Korean Buddhism has much to offer lay and monastic alike. May the Chogye Temple Stay programs be much more than a box to tick for tourists, and instead transmit the essence of what deep meditation can offer a modern stress-soaked world. Here is to the unifying vision of Master Wonhyo, and to a new Wonhyo that can unite all the traditions of Korean and global Buddhism, and perhaps even all peoples and religions. I guess that perhaps the coming Wonhyo to be born is in the form of a very very big climate change. A lotus for you, a Buddha to be. And a deep bow for your heartfelt and touching work. :)

Very truth of desire for material things are the most danger and meditation is purifying your mind , since this video has shown at the middle of the video , your face become a clear skin, how much on the way you have practice it, show the result , just a sample , how nice to hear from your voice through Buddha Lesson

Beautiful film! Thanks so much for making and sharing it. Wonderful job also on representing Won Hyo Dae Sa's life and his teachings with your thoughtful words and contemplative voice. As a Korean born person though, I am a bit perplexed by Won Hyo Dae Sa's family back ground explained in this film. Through my primary education in Korea (which was a very long time ago!) I was taught that he was born in to a royal family in the Shilla Dynasty, he was married (which became a very controversial subject but then, it fits his persona) with a widow princess (arranged by the King at that time), bore a son (sons?) who later became a well known writer and philosopher and also the one who's developed earlier version of the Korean alphabets. Not that these details should deter anyone's curiosity and understanding of this great man, I just thought your viewers might want to know a bit more about him. I sincerely hope that the pilgrimage trails will be developed and will attract many seekers from all over the world, and very soon! I myself walked many routes of the Camino de Santiago and would love to follow Won Hyo Dae Sa's footsteps myself, sort of like coming into a full circle in my quest through being a pilgrim, in to my homeland!

Hi John, you're right. He was born a nobleman, married a widow princess (although it was only for a few nights), had a son named Seol Chong who became the great Confucius scholar. I'm making a documentary to explain all that! I'm glad that Tony made this documentary to pique foreigners' interest in Wonhyo! Much love and best wishes to Tony!
