The only downside of fanfiction is the "supportive" "community" that usually surrounds it. This community often only serves to coddle the artist, and reaffirm the opinion that ANY criticism is bad and everything the artist pulls out of their backside is wholly and purely "good".
I'm convinced that today's crop of Hollywoke writers grew up writing fanfiction in this environment.

Ah yes. In the end artists are only as good as their ability to improve their weaknesses, and to recognize when they're being coddled by an echo chamber. Discomfort is a big part of growth.
