    I really wanna play a Reborn who is a Skeleton, brought back to life because he was a prize fighter in a boxing ring and he longs for a fight that will finally fulfill his restless soul. @Lurklen 3 года назад

      @@afineegg1040 Mmm, the comment I was replying to is gone, but it didn't lay it out as Humanoid/Undead. It just stated that being Undead wouldn't change anything, which it would (I have an Undead player, he's a skeleton, healing is tricky for him, but he gets many other benefits).
      I also think that's a silly rule, what determines that the Humanoid takes precedence? Why not the Undead? Why is this Undead a Humanoid anyways? Vampires aren't, Skeletons aren't, nor are Wights, and there's not a big difference. Almost all of them would qualify as a Humanoid. It's just kinda cherry picking the good part for balance and that to me defeats the point. I'm fine with construct or undead PCs, they just work differently.

    The part of the skill in the d6 the reborn get is totally understandable. I've been playing a UA reborn cleric with also a bard in my team and almost every ability check I had +1d4+1d6+1d8, which included initiative AND stuff like dispel magic or potentially counterspell if I had it. I think the counterspell part is the most relevant, just the jack of all trades bonus makes it really strong and a whole d6 would probably be a bit much, especially considering they get a lot of other strong abilities

You have to attack someone first, you'll basically never use it for initiative, and for counterspell you need to get your caster in melee, have them use their action to make a melee attack that does 1d4+CON and then maybe you'll get a +5, if someone casts a relevant spell after all of this

    • @Booklat1
      @Booklat1 3 года назад

      @@superiorus999 hm, just carry some rats and bite them before combat or after a rest and you'll set up the effect for initiative
      You will also occasionally crit while doing this so bonuses can get higher. Your con will also likely go beyond +2 eventually but I think your +5 estimate was indeed reasonable for most of the game
      I've already made a /r 3d6 post about making this more interesting but basicaly just stack these checks with classes that already have those bonuses. Counterspells for abjurers, initiative for war and chronomancer wizards, Both for bards. Bladesinger can use an attack cantrip and bite in the same action thus setting up a check too.
      And honestly, carrying around a few rats in a bag for a character that is supposedly already roleplaying a bloodsucking creature should be easy.

      @superiorus999 3 года назад

I would like the option to use dex or Str but I understand why its con.

    We're getting ready to play 'Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus', and I've been thinking about playing a Reborn Hellrider who had been caught in the portal between Avernus and the Prime Material Plane until Elturel was sucked into Avernus. His memory is fragmented, but he has moments of clarity.

  • @VonSnootingham
    @VonSnootingham 3 года назад

    I'm playing a Reborn in a game right now. My druid got killed in a boss fight, and his soul got interrupted on its way to the afterlife, getting caught inside a nearby scarecrow. But it has no memories before waking up, so no one, not even it, know that it's the original druid. Just me and the DM. The party wants to journey to a revival shrine they know of to raise the druid. I can't wait for them to try, just to find that it doesn't work because the soul is already in use. And then they'll have to make the Sophie's Choice (or as I call it, the Tuvix Choice) to keep their new friend and passively kill the old one by not reviving him, or to revive their old friend and basically actively killing their new one. It's going to be delicious.
    But I digress. Ted, you think the Reborn's Knowledge of a Past Life skill is too weak, and would make it usuable on ANY roll. For my reborn, I thought RAW was too GOOD, at least thematically. My reborn is just the soul of the previous halfling druid, who had proficiency in Perception, Medicine, Nature, and Survival. So why would a glimps of this past life be able to give it a bonus to, say, Athletics? So my DM and I agree that it can only use this ability on those four skills. We also decided to keep the scarecrow as the UA version of Reborn for now for the same reason. Ancestral Legacy lets you keep any racial movespeed or proficiencies, of which my halfling had none. That means it could get two proficiencies. Same thing as Past Life. We said I'd only be able to pick two of those four the halfling had (of which the scarecrow already has one). So we opted to just keep Darkvision (which was lost from UA to published). Also kept the Construct status, because dude is DEFINITELY a construct, being made of straw and wood and watermelon plants. (which is also why [besides me being a glutton for punishment] we decided to make it vulnerable to fire.]

    The answer is probably a resounding "NO", but hear me out.... Is it conceivable that as a raging Path of the Beast Barbarian Dhampir with the Bite option selected, your vampiric bite would turn into a d8, add your strength to the attack and damage roll, and also gain additional hitpoints equal to your prof. mod if below half health? If I had to guess, Jeremy Crawford would probably say the beast fangs and vampiric fangs are two separate weapons even though they are physically the same part of your character's body. I don't think I'd allow it as a DM, but I could see another DM saying it's fine. It would obviously be broken as hell. Fun to think about though.

Since they don't have the spores anymore, they went from being Spores to Stars Druid (though they actually have more levels in grave cleric right now). But I've reskinned Stars as Spectral druid. Instead of taking on a starry constellation form, it's literally the soul dislodging and extruding from the body. Stars also gets a starmap item that is a focus of their abilities. Instead, it's a soulcatcher/dreamcatcher that was placed in the chest of the scarecrow by whatever farmer for luck, and THAT is where my soul is anchorerd. Not that anyone knows it's in there yet. Normally if the map is lost or destroyed, the druid can spend an hour magically replacing it. If MINE is destroyed, like with Alphonse Elric, the anchor is destroyed and my soul moves on.

It's also the only one where you're not hung up on the low damage from the bite. Too many other videos seem to come from the perspective that the bite is akin to a main weapon, rather than a useful occasional buff.
    I need some help - my DM is new to 5e, as well. I'm a level 2 Wood Elf rogue now thinking of becoming a Dhampir rogue. My understanding is that I'll lose all the traits of my Wood Elf race (e.g. Mask of the Wild, Fey Ancestry, Trance, etc), but keep my skill proficiencies. Do I lose, or keep, the weapon proficiencies granted to me as an elf? I'm thinking I keep them because they are not so much traits, as training elves receive.
    Also, the level 3 spider climb abilities. Is that level 3 of my character (e.g. my next level up if I became a Dhampir now), or after I've levelled up 2 more times as a Dhampir (e.g. when my character is level 5)?

    For the longest time I've had a character concept of a Sun god worshipping Devotion Paladin who counts as an Undead because he was corrupted by, or grew up in, the Shadowfell or the Negative Energy Plane. I wanted him to not get the standard benefits from healing, be completely unable to cross magic circles, and set off the 'Kill it! Kill it with fire!" senses from every other paladin in his order.
    Reborn came so close to fulfilling that and being a stand in for a playable Returned race for Theros. As it stands, it might be better to just reflavor the Anvilwrought supernatural gift to be undead instead of construct based.

      Although that is already covered with Shifters being half-lycanthropes and the Path of the Beast Barbarian subclass.

      It is with every new book. Homebrew will eventually be necessary to keep older content in line.

    21:00 "Being a dragon doesn't give you benefits." Well, not being humanoid does, though. since you become immune against many loe level spells like hold person, charm person or dominate person.

    The dhampir bite would totally work with a barbarian's brutal critical

    Any idea why WotC decided to remove the 'undead' type from Reborn? It feels weird that you can be a zombie/skeleton PC but you don't count as undead (mechanically, at least). If they wanted to go for single-type lineages I would've much preferred that they were just undead instead of humanoid.

    You don’t want to give GWM/Sharpshooter a pool of bardic inspiration for free. That’s why you don’t want to have the undead be attack rolls.
