It should have never come to this. He was impeached two times and both times he was kept in office by politicians who put party before their oath. I'm not sure if we should always be always associating democracy as being synonymous with freedom, as it's definitely plausible for democracy to be subverted in order take that away. We all need to realize (if we don't already) that you don't get freedom for free, it takes persistence defending the first and keeping each other educated about the things that threaten it.
Many people think that protecting the first means banning people or silencing people that threaten them or whom support risky behavior..Perhaps even making certain types of information harder to get to. The other day I met someone who'd suggested that we should de-anonymize the internet despite them not having any idea how one could enforce that. If you truly support the 1st, then you'd understand that each of these situations are actually the opposite of what the 1st is supposed to enable.
To be clear, honoring the 1st means that you have to vehemently defend it against those that try to control it in these ways. The __only__ way to do this with regards to others whom take advantage of the 1st amendment...is through vigilance and constant awareness. Vehemently speaking out about right from wrong (wrong being people who're not altruistic), consistently correcting people who might be mistaken (everyone is human), and holding those that refuse to be corrected accountable (humility is totally a virtue).

There must be consequences for spewing lies and not-well-proven accusations and misinformation. There must be a limit to spreading conspiracy conjectures and falsehoods, at the very least with respect to the legitimacy of elections
and perhaps a few other critical aspects to democracy.
The reason I do not concur with you is that given social media, everything moves so quickly that conspiracy conjectures and outright lies and even coup attempts such as this one may well move too quickly to allow a proper response.
Additionally, the tendency of people to enter to a cult of personality towards a political figure, and to in general accept what they hear first (usually from their leader) and then strongly block their minds to later offers of legitimate truths and evidence, may well place saving a democracy squarely out of reach, where it will then stay (as in how Putin controls his people).

      > There must be consequences for spewing lies and not-well-proven accusations and misinformation. There must be a limit to spreading conspiracy conjectures and falsehoods, at the very least with respect to the legitimacy of elections
Yep. That's the weakness of the 1st...you can't have consequences for __any__ type of information. But the other aspect is that they're non-enforceable except through an aspect of capitalism/anarchy (free market regulation). If you even try to censor or obscure it in any way, it only creates a "black market" for that type of information (lmk if you want me to clarify this)...and that means that you can't even regulate it in the way you'd want to.
There are "ancient" solutions for enforcement, however, but they're just not used by information producers/consumers (for some reason). The two enemies of the 1st are "censorship" and excessive information (profusion? ..don't have a word for this). We're in the information age, and we need to understand this (honoring or to revere the 1st).
      > The reason I do not concur with you is that given social media, everything moves so quickly that conspiracy conjectures and outright lies and even coup attempts such as this one may well move too quickly to allow a proper response.
You don't even need to use "social media" as an example. You can classify information into 3 types, "fact-based", "misinformation" (where the source is still altruistic..but wrong), and "disinformation" (where the source is __not__ altruistic). To be clear, determining the altruism is impossible. From these, though, you can), now classify "advertising" as one of these, as some can be considered "misinformation" with others as "disinformation". It's also relevant to note, that "fact-based" information has a cost to it that not everybody is willing to pay..and when information propagates, others do not have to pay that same cost (nor do people care to).
The only way to really distinguish something as factual is by experiencing something with all 5 senses instead of the more popular of 2, but not everybody considers that difference with regards to how you consume information. This has been frustrated by the death of local journalism with all of us observing in silence. This is likely because information monopolies provide us great services using the "currency" we can pay __only__ them with (because they have no competitors that take our currency).
There is one other place where we indoctrinate civilians through information (other than the Internet)...and there's still potential anarchy where everybody questions the things that they hear amongst each other...and that's in education. Afaict it's really the only other place this happens (lmk otherwise). Unfortunately there's a number of issues in education (with its own monopolies), with a number of opacities with regards to learning, and other issues as demonstrated by the rise of the certification industry and parasitic schools (that promise jobs/careers). There's resource issues that occur because the wrong benchmark is being used to reward schools (instead of the number of students, with schools competing for their participation...which is a different idea, though).
Regardless, public schools do not teach a number of systems that are ubiquitous, and as a result it has an effect where civilians are susceptible to disinformation when someone else "teaches" them otherwise. Only when all of us are indoctrinated similarly and fairly (through the the natural regulation of competition) will our capitalist democracy still be in reach and voting by consensus be effective. Ideally, information needs to come from us and propagate upwards, and not from the highest bidder downwards.
      > Additionally, the tendency of people to enter to a cult of personality towards a political figure...
Apparently it is not ubiquitous knowledge that charisma can be trained, and training can be bought. There's aspects of psychology that are directly applied to marketing and public speaking, but it's considered higher education. We're living in the information age, and we do not fundamentally understand how the way that we learn things affects the way that we interpret them.
